Because men aren't silly like women. I have heard they don't hide when they have to change in a locker room as well
So spinning off the bathroom sign question, WHY do men not get privacy to pee? Seriously, WHY? There has to be a certain amount of space between the urinals, so why are there not dividers so people can pee in peace? Shoot, if there were little walls, you could put "saloon" style doors on them.
Are newer bathrooms for men affording more privacy? Is it irrational to think that they should have privacy?

Possibly because for a guy to pee doesn't involve having to disrobe the lower half of his body.
And FWIW, I really couldn't care less if a stranger sees me pee. If that's his/her only joy in life, then s/he is seriously starved for entertainment.
Because there really isn't much to see... A man exposes a few inches of skin that is mostly hidden by cloying/hands, does his business, shakes it off, tucks it back in, and is done. Plus, when he only needs to pee, he doesn't need to sit down. For a woman, we have to completely pull down our pants and underwear, leaving everything out there. We have menustral issues to deal with, and who wants to pull out a bloody tampon or change a pad with an audience? And even men don't like pooping in the open. For a woman, any elimination has to be done sitting down... There is no convenient shortcut for us. If I *could* pee the same way a man does, I would prefer a quick and easy trip to a urinal to having to wait for a stall.
Well, if they want privacy they can use a stall instead of a urinal.
It's just that a urinal is quicker and they want to get in and out fast.
For a lot of guys - they just don't care and it's not something that bothers them.
I don't know, however, men can choose to use a stall if they want. Personally, my guess is that guys just do what they are comfortable with.
Be happy you live in the US as in other countries there might be one large bathroom with doors on either end for all to use.
Other cultures are not hung up on these things that we are. You go in and do what you got to do and move on. I do recall a sign on the Canadian highway many years back that stated by picture no peeing on the side of the road. I guess it was an area where there were no bathrooms for a set number of miles and people used to use the side of the road in plain sight.
We as a culture just seem to make more of an issue about this. It is part of life and that's how they look at it.
Off my soapbox now.

PS This can't be any worse than being on a ferry crossing the English Channel with 100 stalls and 300 women trying to get ready to get off the boat at one time when it docks. Lots of hairspray, curling irons, combs, brushes, washes clothes and soap flying and clothes changing. More than the back set of a fashion show.
i've always wondered that myself.
and with the transgender issue coming to the forefront, and bathrooms now being segregated by gender and not by sex, i'm curious as to how it will change in the future.

I think it's just the male gender. My boys have always been very comfortable naked. Good question about the dividers. I just don't think they care.
Well I think there's an unwritten rule that you don't look over at who is next to you, eyes straight ahead. I don't think it goes over too well if you look over, so it's still fairly private, and pants are still up.
It would be a lot quicker - that's for sure. I know I hate waiting in lines to go.
I think that if most men cared there would be change, but most don't seem to care.
Because men don't care. So people don't invest in the extra hardware to build stalls when no one is asking for them.
I have never heard a man complain that he needs privacy to pee. I have heard they don't like the urinals because pee splashes back on their slacks.
If they don't care, why fix it?
Well, in my limited discussions with my DH and SS, they do mind but they deal with it when they have to because they have to.
ETA: We went to a restaurant that had a row of sinks in the facing a wall where half the doors were marked "men" and half "women" and they were all individual toilets. IMO, that worked very well. They could have just been unisex but I recall there being half and half. Handwashing need not be private, so it wasn't.
Thanks to my husband I know more about men's restrooms than I'd like to. :) For one plenty of men do use stalls because they want privacy. For every uber comfortable guy yanking out his parts and getting down to business, there are plenty who are equally uncomfortable standing what amounts to shoulder to shoulder taking care of business. The uncomfortable ones grit their teeth and endure it; use a stall or find the rare infrequently used bathroom. Some of the seemingly comfortable ones are going along with a dash of bravado because it's really not worth making a fuss over a short trip.
For another it's not a cultural hang up because being part of a culture does not guarantee someone will whole heartedly embrace all of the culture's norms. I know plenty of Europeans who are not fond of nude sunbathing for instance. Some people need more privacy than others. That's a reflection of individual human needs.
My husband readily admits it can be odd to stand side by side with someone you are about to sit next to a meeting. He will go out of his way to find the infrequently used bathroom and then will use the stall anyway. He is a man who prefers his privacy and would like to avoid the chatty guy at the urinal.
The worst part of all of his stories are the vast number of men who don't wash their hands. Yuck!
There is nothing at all to stop a man from peeing in the privacy of a stall. But I suspect there would be more of a wait for a stall and men's rooms would start accumulating lines like ladies rooms do. And there does not have to be a certain amount of space between urinals. Some stadiums are now installing troughs without dividers so men can stand as close to or far apart as they wish.
More curious to me, why don't they wipe?? I have two little boys, I KNOW they drip!!
I imagine it is because a man doesn't need to get all undressed or pull his pants down to use the urinal. If I didn't need to pull my pants right down to pee I wouldn't need all that privacy either.
I literally have no idea what goes on in a mans bathroom, how or where they pee, nor do I care to know. lol
