silly question I know. but you believe the old wives tale not to shower/bathe when it's thundering and lightning out? Just curious since I need to toss my girl in the tub but it's starting to get yucky out.

What can I do next?

Newer homes are grounded to the water line so there is a small risk to bathing in a storm. Here is the thing though if you fill the tub before she gets in the connection to the water line is broken. It is the flowing water that is the danger.

Mythbusters did that, they proved there was no reason not to take a bath or shower during a thunderstorm.

Mythbusters did an episode on it. You are fine to shower/bathe during a lightning storm. My husband used to yell at me all the time for being in the shower when it was storming out. Then we just happen to see that episode because my 12 year old son loves loves loves the Mythbusters. My husband does not bother me about it anymore.

I have heard this, and usually take really quick showers during a storm. Well, this source, WeatherUnderground, states: Avoid bathing during a lightning storm as the household plumbing can carry a deadly current.

Yes I believe. Ever since 1986 when I was 12y and lightning hit my neighbor's house right outside the bathroom and it knocked all of the metal decoration off of the wall paper. There were little silver decorations everywhere!

We also turn off the computer and tvs.

Hi D.,

People have been electrocuted through a urine flow sitting on the toilet during a storm....yes, avoid the bathtub, showering, washing hands, anything of that nature. We lived in an area of NC where everyone had lightning protection on their homes because it was so prevalent. I always wondered why until lightning struck our house and I was glad it was grounded! Nearly burst my eardrums!

Water conducts electricity. Better safe than sorry.

I never do because I have this phobia about being in a dark bathroom. (Thank you Stephen King...) I am always too scared about the possibility that the power will go out. :P I've been known to slip and fall in the shower when it's light... let alone if I'm in the dark! LOL!

I don't think it is an old wives tale. Lightening can strike and travel through pipes and into water. We never do it. I will be interested to learn if others think there is no legitimacy to it.

I think it's an old wives tale.... that being said, I heard it so often as a kid that now my rational side flies out the door when it's a really nasty storm and I'm wanting a shower. Lol. Makes me jumpy even though I seriously doubt it's anything to reallly worry about. I know lightening can travel through pipes, but I think alot of pipes have rubber on places of them to ground them.

We had a lightening storm right over our neighborhood a few years ago. A boy down the street was in the tub when the lightening hit his house, traveled down the plumbing and shocked him. He survived but now we turn off the computers, stay away from the stove and don't shower when the storms are close.

I have well water. I don't shower during storms - my parents' well was struck a couple of times when I was a kid. I would imagine it depends if you have city or well water.

i've never heard that one. As a kid, mom would get the shampoo and let us shower outside. That was in the 80s. I guess now adays, everyone's scared of lighting. It can be an issue especially if you are grounded (barefoot). So a simple rain - sure go shower/bathe. A thunderstorm - go inside and watch thru the window.

Ha - I thought you were talking about actually going outside and washing your hair in the yard. OOPS. Didn't quite understand your question until reading other's responses. Well Sue seems to have done her research. I guess listen to the experts. I won't loose any sleep worrying about it.

My husband was almost struck by lightning coming out of a tv about 30 years ago. He still talks on his cell phone and takes a shower in storms, though I refuse to do either.
