My son is not even 9months yet and already sticking his nose up to baby food! He will eat the desserts and some breakfast foods but it has been so hard to get him to eat it since we started letting him try our food. He has went from 3-4 jars a day to maybe 1,I have tried stage 3,gerber graduates, etc...all he wants is our food, he loves cheerios and crackers, but he just cant eat that! He has reflux so what I give him I have to watch out that its not spicy or anything. Any ideas on some quick healthy foods for him to eat?? He has 9 teeth and is trying to use them to chew but still gets chocked up sometimes. ANY IDEAS???? My girls kept with their baby foods until well over a year and didn’t have stomach problems so it was a lot easier to feed them. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Hi N.-

I started my son on baby foods when he was about 6 months and he only ate them for about a month. He insisted on eating what we eat. He is allergic to the protein in milk, so it's been challenging at times to remember to pull some food out before I add cheese or milk! He eats a lot of plain food and I try to add spaghetti sauce, Italian salad dressing or ketchup (the main toddler food group LOL) to give him variety.

I guess some kids just don't like baby food that much. My daughter ate baby foods much longer. In fact, she was still eating the toddler meat sticks (they look like Vienna sausages) up until she was about 2 1/2. She LOVED those things. YUK!

Good luck, and just try to remember to offer the rainbow of foods. My son just discovered that he loves blueberries and blackberries!

Hi N.,

Me again...funny how I always read your emails and respond - and it is you again. :) Hope all is well!

My daughter stopped eating baby food at about 5 months. My son was more easy going. They have eaten table food since they were about 6 months. I think it helped them move into good food and healthy food easier. They have eaten grown up food and loved it ever since. I just watched carefully and made sure it was small ans mushy enough. My daughter started waking up at night again because she just couldn't get enough in her because it took a long time to eat - she would not eat from a spoon and would only eat what she could feed herself! I kept at it anyway and she eventually had it down. Every baby has some type of reflux, so start out slowly and gradually grow into a wide variety of food. The only adivice part I have is I heard consistently from others to NOT feed table food to them AND cereal in a bottle - it confuses them. I don't know if it does, but I heard that a lot.

Hi N., how are you? Necco giving you fits about that nasty baby food! Try tasting it and you will know why he doesn't want to eat it...yuk!! Try taking the foods you eat that he can and blend or mush it up some and he should be just fine! How is everyone else doing?? I hardly ever used baby food. One, I really couldn't afford it because that gets really expensive and two, they ate my food right out of my plate alot better and they slept alot better also!! I guess that is also why none of mine every drank a bottle for very long!! anyway I hope this helps Necco and you and good luck! D.

Don't sweat it! Both my boys (now 4 yrs and 18 months) were both on table foods (only) at 9 months. Both are excellent eaters. I do believe the faster you get babies on table food the better eaters they are!!!!

Just go with it!

Hi,
My girls didn't eat jarred baby foods at all and I freaked but realized there are many other options. Also one of my girls was allergic to milk products and rice and had acid reflux. I gave my daughter bananas ofcourse. I steamed different types of frozen vegatables(esp. the ones for soup b/c of the variety). Frozen and Fresh is best according to all the peditricians I spoke with. Fresh mini carrots steamed are great. My daughters both loved the meat sticks by Gerber. I just took the skin off. Finally I made plain pasta or brown rice for the girls before I fixed it with all the spices. I hope this helps.

N.,

My son only ate baby food for a couple weeks. He also wanted whatever we were having. It was no problem. He still got formula and he got every veggie and soft food possible. Try yogurt (plain, if possible) and avocados. I am sure you will come up with a great, healthy diet.

Good Luck!

Have you tries canned veggies? My daughter started these pretty early. You can chop them up pretty easy or leave them whole. Mac and cheese- the real kind - is good too. I started processing everything that I made my other kids for my little one pretty early on (my pediatrician was okay with this) and she now eats with us (she is just about 1). She only has six teeth- but she can manage most of the stuff we have. It just takes practice.

since he likes the desserts, try mixing some of a dessert in with some of the other baby foods...it will make it sweeter and he will be more likely to eat it that way...then gradually, mix in less and less...

good luck!

Try blanching some fresh veggies and puree them in a blender or food processor. My son did this and I also made carrots, apples, and roast this way.
