I would like to thank everyone for the helpful tips for proper hygiene for my 5 year old son. I also have a concern about my 3 year old son. He has a habit of sucking his tongue when he gets sleepy n while hE is asleep. How can I break that habit?

What can I do next?

This is an involuntary sucking thing he is doing in his sleep. It is most likely self soothing. You can't stop it... he does it in his sleep. Even if you wake him each time he does that... he won't stop, and then he will not be getting a good sleep. And he can't literally tell himself what to do, while he is asleep.

Just be thankful he is not sucking his thumb or a pacifier.
My son, used to use a pacifier (he doesn't anymore)... and once in a blue moon, I will see him sucking his tongue. But it is only for brief moments. For me, its not a bad habit or a big deal. It is just something he does. Like, some people snore, or grind their teeth, or talk in their sleep, or fart while sleeping.

I am sure he will grow out of it.

All the best,
Susan

I don't know about the growing out of it. My sister sucked her thumb, but I sucked my tongue (I've never called it that before, funny.) While doing that, I would rub a blanket's satin through my fingers. When I am anxious, or just need something soothing, I still find myself doing this. But I had good teeth, and other than some teasing from my family and husband, no other negatives. I don't really see it as a problem, especially while he is sleeping.

Hello A.

This is a habit he will need to grow out of. To help, One Step Ahead, the child product website, has a cover which fits over the thumb and makes it hard to suck. I suggest looking into that.

Is it really a habit that needs to broken? If it's not a safety issue, why not let it be. It could be worse, like the previous post indicated. If it helps him sleep, what's the harm?
