I have a lot of experience with children. I was a teacher for over 10 years. Recently my best friend asked me to babysit her boys 2 and 3. The 2 year old is very sweet but is still in diapers and i'm very unaware how to change a 2 year old diaper (i only have experience with infants) The 3 year old is very defiant and is not taking a liking to me. what can I do?

What can I do next?

changing a 2 year olds diaper is no diff than an infant. It sounds like you are a little discussed that the 2 year old is wearing diapers. if you dont like the diaper changing idea maybe you should just hold off on this until the kids are a little older.

I found two differences in changing a toddler: the diapers smell worse; and the child wiggles much more. Give him a toy or something to hold his attention while you change him. As for the smell, you'll just have to grin and bear it. Pull-ups are an easy quick solution but they're detrimental in the long run and make it harder to potty train a child. At least, this has been my experience.

You can say you would rather not - or you can ask her what you might do differently to avoid dislike from older and what mom does differently with a two year old than an infant in changing diaper. Is there a chance 2-year old could wear pull-ups when you provide care - I suspect the primary difference is amount of product in diaper (may require tubbing to clean fully), and mobiility issue - ask mom how she handles.

I am not sure if you are wanting advice how to change a diaper, how to deal with these kids, or how to tell your BF "no". Changing a diaper is the same no matter what age, just the stuff inside is worse. ;o) You can always ask her to show you before she leaves. The 3 yr old will need discipline and maybe the two of you can hit it off. If you do not, then it is not your job to be his/her friend. It is your job to watch them and make sure they are safe. Sometimes it takes a stranger for a child to listen. If you are doing this for free, I would do it to help her out once or twice, if you are doing it for money, think of it as a job. The going rate is around $7-$10/ hour depending on what you do. I would go with $7 or $8 an hour if it is your friend and you will be doing it often. Try it and see what you think. Don't worry about it until you need to.

The diaper is the same as changing an infants , just the kid is bigger and the move around more (and try to escape) , but on the plus side they don't need to be changed as often as an infant. As for the 3 yr old , try to get his attention by suggesting something fun that you are going to do with him , if this does not work then you will have to be firm and tell him that you are not going to accept his behaviour , the more times you have to reinforce this he will learn that you mean what you say.

I really can't imagine there being any difference in a toddler or a infant in changing a diaper. Be interesting to the child show him interesting things.
