Sorry, but I agree it's too high. I paid less than that for a college-educated, professional nanny with several years experience in Washington, DC for FOUR kids ranging (ages 6mo- 9 yrs at that time) and I had several to choose from. Rates in Charlotte tend to be less unless you are very lucky. To whom much is given, much is expected so that income would likely require you to be the house manager, cook, cleaner, etc. I am NOT saying you wouldn't be worth it, just that working moms need to make sure they make enough to support more than the nanny or else why work? There are even more options down here for daycare than I had in DC, so that impacts salaries as well. Good luck!

Holy cow- If I had to pay our daycare or a nanny that much per child- there'd be no point to me working. I pay $210/ week for my infant and $185/ week for my 3 year old. They're there nearly 40 hous a week- that's $5.25/ hour for the infant.

We pay our sitters $10/ hour. You'd be lucky to get $10-15/ hour as a nanny for 1 child.

$25-30/ hour is outrageous.

Hi R.,

I would also have to agree with your friend that the babysitting rates are rather expensive. Even if you were expected to care for your friend's child 8-10 hours each day, that would average anywhere from $200-$240, which is what most in-home or larger daycare facilities charge weekly. The experience and knowledge you possess is wonderful, but not justifiable to pay those rates for childcare. I hope the situation works out between you and your friend - give her some time to research other daycare sites and make the comparison, in order to find something that is emotionally and financially perfect for her and the child.

Sincerely,
A. B.
