My daughter just turned one on October 8th and she has been doing this ever since she could make sounds which was about 3 or 4 months old. She doesn't really talk besides saying "mama and dada" and a few other sounds here and there. I don't worry about her not talking yet because my son that is 11 now did not talk until he was almost two but sometimes she makes the sounds in a really weird voice. When she 1st started we just thought it was really funny and we use to say it sounds like she was "growling." I thought she would grow out of it. Otherwise she is hitting all her milestones. Has anyone had experience with this before???

What can I do next?

my son has been doing that for months.
He's now 2. He will just start talking in a deep, creepy voice. Laugh it off. they're exploring what they can do.

My hubby & I call it his "Shining Voice" because it sounds like the kid from the movie the Shining..ya know "RED RUM, REDRUM"

We laugh now about my third son, who sounded like a little old man until the time he was about 5. I think it's normal :)

My baby sounded like he was yodeling. It was so funny.
I think they all experiment with sounds they can make.
Your baby won't growl forever.

My sons under a yr and he talks in grunts and high pitched squeeks. I think they all just pick their own sound and it weens out as they become more verbal lol. Just enjoy it while its cute!

My youngest boy also has the "red rum" voice! When he was younger it used to make us laugh so hard...he is now almost 5 years old and had the gruffest voice ever...but it is who he is and we love it!

For the most part I think your daughter is just experimenting with the sounds she can make...I would worry about it.

awww, im laughing at the other mom who called it the "red rum voice", thats frikken CUTE. yeah i think some babies can have that weird voice because they are trying out their vocal chords.

My baby cackles hoarsley when she laughs, like a little old smoking lady, its the cutest, but she is starting to grow out of it. Give it time, ive never met a grown kid who talked like that.

hehe i think i remember my daughter doing this a little, too. She's probably just doing it cause it feels funny and different. I'm sure she'll grow out of it as she starts speaking more :oD

If she has other sounds that are not growling like, then just wait her out. If all her sounds were like this, I would ask your pediatrician about it.

My daughter did this at this age too..we lovingly referred to her as monster baby. It was rather disturbing and a wee bit anoying but she was just communicating in her original way. Now she's 3 and talks non-stop and shreiks so high and loud dolphins in the ocean start swimming to shore. Don't worry this will soon morph into something else!

My daughter used to growl all the time ( we jokingly referred to it as the "Linda Blair Syndrome", werewolf girl, etc) Someone told me that some kids do that whenn they are happy or proud of themselves. Even now, at 3, she occasionally does it when not specifically imitating an animal and yes, she usually does seem to be in quite a good mood when doing it.
Nothing to worry about whatsoever - just get the humor and cuteness out of it because it won't last forever and you'll miss it. My daughter is perfectly normal.
