What is the proper etiquette regarding having a baby shower for a second child? My cousin has a 4-year-old son and is having baby girl in June. I've always heard that having a shower for baby #2 is not appropriate unless many years have past since the birth of the first child. What are your thoughts on this subject? THANK YOU!!

I agree with Erikka - if they've gotten rid of lots of baby stuff and now may need new stuff - then who cares what etiquette says - throw her a shower if you want to! All babies should be invited into the world with a party! Plus, whether it's the 2nd, 3rd, or 10th, you'll always need diapers and wipes and such!

Hi Jessica,
I have 4 children and I have had a baby shower given to me for each one, I only had three showers, because my last pegnancy I was pregnant with twins, but it had been 5 years since I had a child, and I had 2 girls first and the twins are boys, so needless to say I needed boy things, but my point is, it depends on family and friends, whether they want to offer giving you a shower. I really don't think there is anything wrong with it. Especially since she is having a girl, and has a boy, she is going to need girly things!! Not only that, after a first child you can reuse some things, but somt things get too gross to use again, and look at how much things are changing from year to year.
Baby showers are so much fun too!!!! I had three showers for my 1st daughter and one of them was just a diaper shower, where the guests just brought diapers and wipes.
It may be proper etiquette but if think of it this way, if you got pregnant again and you were going to have a girl, wouldn't you LOVE to have a shower to welcome her into the world with family and friends?
I hope I helped.

I've always been told it's ok as long as it's a different sex.....I think that's proper etiquette. My BFF is throwing me one next month and it's my 2nd....different sex though!! I would not worry about it!

Here's my two cents on the topic...a baby shower is something that someone offers to throw for someone, not something that the person requests. Etiquette-schmetiquette! I had a baby shower for both of my kids - both boys born almost 3 years apart. My sister and a very good friend threw my first one and my mom threw my second. My feeling is that every baby deserves a celebration! My other thought is that if there are people out there hung up about etiquette, then they can choose to not attend the baby shower. I am currently pregnant with #3 and this baby will be born 21 months apart from #2. My mother has talked about throwing me another shower - perhaps a diaper shower...not sure yet as we don't know the sex of the baby yet. My 2nd shower certainly wasn't as big as my first, but it was fun and it celebrated the day with people who were very close to me. I guess I think that Emily Post was from a MUCH different generation - today what is "the norm" is MUCH different from what was "the norm" 15 years ago. I am not sure if you asking because you want to help throw the shower or because you are offended that she is having one, but in my mind do what your heart tells you not "etiquette" or Emily Post!

I say have a shower since it is going to be a girl. If she was having a boy then I'd say have one after the baby is born. I only had one shower with my first son, when I had my second son 2 1/2 years later I still had all my baby stuff, but he was born in a different season, so he needed winter things. But if you are willing to throw a shower for her, I say who cares!

Absolutely! Especially with her second one being a different gender! Ultimately if a friend or family member wants to throw a baby shower I don't know many people who would question it. They are fun and you likely get to see people you haven't seen in a while! Women are always up for parties and gift giving!!

Each child deserves a shower! My friend has 2 girls in less than 2 years. For the second on we had a tea party. The invites said "(Name) is brewing us another beautiful baby, please join us in celebration".
It was great because she got more pretty outfits and TONS of diapers and the things you really need.
After 4 years the mom might have a lot of things she needs. If she is uncomfortable, she can decide not to register and put on the invites that diapers are appreciated or something like that.

I recently went to a baby shower for a friend having her 3rd boy in 4 years. None of us questioned it at all. Baby showers are fun and are a great way to shower the mommy with love and support and gifts whether it is her first child or her 20th. Every baby deserves to be welcomed into the world with a shower. Since you are having a different gender I think that makes even more appropriate for you to have a shower and if you are at all concerned about maybe you could have a diaper shower where everyone justs brings a pack of diapers or an outfit shower where everyone brings one new outfit for the new addition!

I think it is appropriate because many years have indeed passed and it's a girl.

Speaking as someone who did not have a second shower, I would have liked one. I didn't need anything really. Between my sister and I we had a baby every two years. We just passed everything back and forth. She had 2 girls and I had 1 boy already, so we were covered on clothes too. But looking back on it, and it has been 3 years now, I am kind of hurt still that no one even offered to throw a second shower. If they had I would have suggested we just do a small luncheon or tea party with the diaper gift idea. As everyone else is saying, EVERY BABY needs to be celebrated.

I have four boys and was given at least two showers for each one. My family usually gave one and my coworkers gave one. Appropriateness was never questioned.

Baby showers are fun and you get new useful baby stuff each time.

Personally, I think that 4 years AND a different gender make having another shower just fine. I'm sure there are plenty of things she needs. Practically speaking, how much baby stuff can you be expected to keep in your house for 4 years?

I felt awkward having a baby shower for my second (4 years apart, both girls) but we got a lot of neat and useful stuff. You could have a theme shower - like bring your favorite bedtime story - but I would just throw a regular shower. They are different sexes, so she will need all new clothes, blankets, bibs, etc. When they were throwing the shower for my second, I read a lot of postings on it, and the general opinion seems to be that every baby deserves a shower.
