Hi Everyone,
My baby is 10 months old and is breastfed. She eats thin rice and oatmeal cereal along with #2 veggies and fruit. I have been trying to get her to eat certain foods that we eat. I have tried simple foods such as mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, crushed veggies, etc. She gags on all this food. Has anyone experienced this? Any suggestions are welcome :)

What can I do next?

Just keep offering. Give her finger food...she will get it. My babies didn't have anything but breastmilk til they were a year old. She has the rest of her life to eat solid food. No worries!

I had the same problem and most babies do. It is recommended that you give them the same food many times before they will eat it and like it. So give mashed potatoes today and again tomorrow then wait a few days and try again. I think it's somewhere before 8-10 times you should give it to them to get them used to the texture and taste then if they still don't eat it figure they don't like it and try again weeks or months later. Babies taste buds change every 60 days.

If she is gagging, then she is not ready for these new textures. Wait a few weeks or month and then try again.

They normal can't stand potatoes and mac and cheese. Plus if your feeding her what you eat don't strip it make sure you flavor it the way you would eat it too. Be health contious but not severly. Also shes 10 months she may not have her taste buds where they should be things are all new to her. Give her a week or so and she will come around. You can try cherrios, fruit loops, give her maybe something not so mashed. Like mac and cheese at 10 months she should have at least two teeth. Let her mush it herself. She can chew the noodles and the cereal. Maybe she is getting sick of mush. Worth a try to give her a little more solid. Don't go to over bored. She will eat when she is ready they all do. When giving her more whole foods you want to give things that will break down with her saliva and she can chew. So don't give her like too hard of something. You could give her pbj's, cherrios, fruit loops, apple sauce, pea, carrots, green beans, corn, noodles, crackers, etc. Good luck!!

HI J.,

The best investment I have is a $10 chopper that I got from Kohl's. My son, too, would gag on food that didn't have that same pureed texture. I wanted him to get used to different tastes and so that is when I bought the chopper. If you have to chop the food up for a little while just so that they get used to the taste, it will pay off in the long run. I also got a great cook book by Annabel Karmel called First Meals. It really helped me w/ cooking and how to prepared foods as they grow. My son is 19 months now and he is a terrific eater!

Good luck!

Hi J.,
I wouldn't worry about it to much. She'll get it. It just may take some time. I would start with one kind of texture and stick with that for a few days and then introduce something else. I started both my kids with plain pasta. Once they got that down I tried something else. I think steamed veggies but I could be wrong. It's just really new to her so it may take awile. Just keep at it. My kids loved yogurt, still do. They eat it every morning. Good luck.

Hi, J.,
I am sory to hear that you have some troubles with your baby. Do not be in a hurry to add someting to your baby's diet, but if she is positive about veggies and fruits, try also yogurt. Do not be upset as those children who are breastfed for a long period of time get much more with their mother's milk.

J.; your baby is 10 months old, you feeding it the rice and vegees and oatmeal cereal is wonderful keep it up, they are not ready for the foods you eat just as yet, keep up with the other foods you have been giving her, seems like she is happy with that, i would ask your dr when it is ok to start on our food, so sounds like you are doing a great job keep on the baby food stuff and dont rush the grownup food on her yet, hang in there she will eat those in time, if she gags on them they might be too heavy for her, thin the mashed potatoes down and if you have to feed her your food, dont add spices to it, and mash them down, either way be happy , and be happy she is eating so well in other areas, D. s

Hi J.,

Giving it time might help take care of it, but you might want to run it by your pediatrician. It might be a sensory problem. If that's the case, they might have someone from PT Physical Therapy) or ST (Speech Therapy) look at her and give you some suggestions for helping her be more comfortable with different textures on the tongue.
