Baby Pulls of Breast and Makes Grunting sounds...what on Earth Is It?!

Hi there,

Okay, this is a bit weird but I'm wondering if anyone has experienced the same. For a long time now, my little one (6 months) will do this very strange behavior right before she falls asleep. I nurse her lying down, and she will nurse, pull off and look away or at the ceiling and make a long groaning, grunting sound and tense her body (my husband laughs at it and says she sounds constipated)...sometimes her face gets red...and then she turns her head and latches back on. This could happen for 15 or 20 minutes before she finally latches on for good and falls asleep (sometimes she'll make the sounds even when she's sucking). I used to just call it her "last minute protesting" before she falls asleep, but it's honestly getting really annoying and I wonder if there's something more to it, or if I should just consider it a weird behavior that will eventually pass. Thanks for reading!!

What can I do next?

both my kids as babies would do that before they pooped, or had to fart or had gas.
Babies make all kinds of noises when feeding.
Or as the others said, they are trying to get the let-down of milk going.

I don't think its "protesting" but just her trying to get the milk flow going, and/or has to poop or fart.

Is this the only time of day that you nurse while lying down? Maybe it is uncomfortable for her to eat that way. If she nurses that way well during other times of the day, then maybe she is working hard to get the milk out. At bedtime, my supply is at it's lowest, and it takes a little longer for the milk to come down. My daughter gets a little antsy, while waiting. My daughter just turned 5 months and she "kneads" my breast while nursing, sometimes pulling my breast out of her mouth without breaking suction first. It hurts and is really annoying. I just try to hold her hand so she can't do it. All kids do weird things. Good luck!

I used to love those adorable funny little noises my daughters made while nursing... except at bedtime! I just wanted to go to sleep! All of my kids did the same thing... I swear to this day they were just playing around (an early start to fooling around at the dinner table!) Very cute, but very annoying. You have your own rituals you go through before bed; changing into your pjs, brushing your teeth, using the bathroom before you climb into bed... this is one of the ways your little one gets ready for the night. My girls grew out of the grunting and groaning, but still used to babble themselves to sleep, even after they had stopped nursing.

My second child sometimes sounded to me like a baby piglet. He writhed and grunted so loud I was almost too embarrassed to nurse him in public.
