Hi! I am due in 8 weeks with my first baby, a boy. We have a great name picked out, but we are not sharing it with anyone until he is born. The first name is one we really like and it's not weird, but not common either. Or so we thought. Since choosing the name, I have heard two people (neither of whom I know) say it's their boy's name. So now I am paranoid that somehow it's going to become of those names that suddenly becomes popular, like Aiden or Ava. I know, there are much bigger things in life to worry about! But if you can, tell me what you have named your baby boy in the past year or two and I can see if anyone else has the same name. Thanks :)
Thanks for all of the great responses. I didn't hear "our" name from everyone else, so I can breathe a sigh of relief. But like so many of you said, even if we had heard it, we would still name this baby the cute name we have picked out. It means something to us and I'm sure he'll love it, too :) As soon as he is born, I'll share it (8 weeks minus 1 day!).
It will tell you the history of number of people with any name you input since 1880. It's cool to see the history of how popular a name was many years ago and if it's on an upswing or not.

I have two sons, Trevor & Ryan. I think whatever you choose will become unique to him & his personality. It's important to "worry" about if it's the right name - but you'll know when you see him for the first time if the name "fits" him. Congrats! :)

You are so funny. I think I am the same way. Being unique has always been one of my, dare I say, obsessions. That being said, I don't share my son's name with anyone very freely. It is unique, but old in origin. I have not met anyone with our son's name. People seem to like it. Anyway. If you want to know what it is, you'll have to ask me personally :) He is 14 months old and I'm hoping that if his name gets popular, he will already be old enough to say, "It was my name first." I'm sorry. I'm weird. I will list the names of all the baby boys that I know that are 3 and under.

I know how you feel. (it's also a 1st time Mom thing)
I don't think it matters what name you pick - you are bound to hear 'someone' that has a friend that has a cousin, who named their kid that same name. I think you pick what you and your husband like - I agree- unique is good, just don't make it weird so they have to explain their name everytime someone asks what their name is. Try not to get hung up on your child being the only one in the whole world with that name, cuz chances are, somebody will know somebody, who knows somebody else with that same name. It's okay, really.
we thought our first son's name was fairly unique, not weird,
(it's in the bible, Caleb now 8) just hadn't been used in a very long time. when we named him, we knew absolutely NO ONE that had a child with the same name. then when he was around 2-3 years old, I would started to hear the name more and more. It was definitely in the top 50 for a while; where it wasn't in even in the top 100 when we named him.
We chose it because my husbands name is Joshua and in the bible Caleb is a companion of Joshua.
So your reason for choosing a name may be so much different than the reason someone else chooses it - and yours will have a special meaning to you and your family. that's all that really matters.
or our friends daughter is Madeline; when they named her 12 years ago - I thought, oh what an old name, and didn't care for it. and WOW, was there a boom of Madeline's and Madi's for a long time. Madeline was in the top 5 for a long time.
I loved the names Aiden and Ava!!! however, we had 2 friends with Aiden's and Ava (we never had a girl!)
My rule was that if a close friend had named their child a name I liked or a family member, those names were off limit to me.
I wouldn't worry about it so much (even though we all do), whatever name you choose will be perfect for your child.
Here are 2 names that we had in the running at one point and didn't use: Gabriel (Gabe), and Liam (a shortened form of William). Gabe I've heard just a couple of times, and Liam I don't recall hearing yet (other than movie stars). (and we had those names in the running from 8 years ago; so I don't think they will become top 10's)
anyway, good luck to you and your family, and god bless you and your new son.

I think that once you pick a name, your ears tend to key on that name from that point on, making it feel more common than it really is. We picked out "Blake" for our son, which we thought was not "wierd" or necessarily common either. Now, I hear it all the time!! By the way, we also liked the name "Phoenix", which was pretty much vetoed by his grandparents, who HATED that name!!
My friend, however, named her son "Arcus" -- which I have NEVER heard outside of her son! It's a neat and definately uncommon name. It does generate a lot of strange looks, second takes, and some giggles though when his name is mentioned for the first time. Their other son's name is "Bricker"...also quite unusual. I guess it's all in what's important to you and to your future son!!
My name is "A." and I have always loved my name, common or not. :-)

I always looked at the social security website and it lists the names people have registered with ss when they have a baby. I thought it was really helpful when I had both my children because I did not want a super popular name. I chose Mia for my 1st and Melanie for my 2nd. Mia became a little more popular but not as much as some of my other choices, ava, ella, etc........
Check it out....I would just google social security baby names
and I do daycare and I have had two Aidyns, a Kaiden, and a Hayden
so I would stay away from those

S., you should just go with the name you've already chosen if it's what you like. It doesn't matter whether it's common or not. What happens if you go with something you consider "second best" and then forever wish you would have used something different. Follow you heart. To answer your question, I have a 2 year old son and a newborn son. Their names are Donovan and Nolan.

We ended up with two girls, so didn't need our boys names we picked out (which is good because they were always harder to agree on). Some of the names we had narrowed it down to were:
The United States of America Social Security offices posts a new press release every year which outlines the most popular baby names. If you don't want common, don't choose one of these.
I think that you will always find someone that will have some relationship with the baby name your son will have, but I think that's ok. The only time you can get away from that completely is to go with something extremely different, like Coco, Apple, or Shiloh.
As long as you like the name, who cares what everyone else says. And, soon your baby will have a name and soon, you will never associate that name with anyone except for your baby, so don't worry about it.

Yes, there are many much more important things to worry about. You must also remember that once you name your child, the name is fair game and can still get popular, so keeping mum on the name does little to quelch others from using it. I will be having my second baby this year. I freely told my name choices throughout both pregnancies and found this had no influence on the names others chose for their babies. Isn't it more important to worry about choosing a name you like?

We choose Conor for our first son. We lived in Ireland at the time and it was a popular name there. I didn't think that it would be that popular here. However, it seems like everyother kid has the same name. They spell it with 2 n's and not just the one like they do in Ireland.
Our other boy is named Ronan. Which is not common in Ireland and so far I have not heard it here.
Have fun. And even if he does have a common name, it's not the end of the world. Sometimes having an unusual name is more of a pain then it's worth. Try explaining every time you talk to someone how to pronounce and how to spell it. My daughters name is Ciara (Kiera) which again is Irish, but everybody pronounces it Sierra. And believe me it bothers me a lot more then I thought it would.

I will add the names of the little boys I know to the mix
Being a "S." myself, I totally feel you on not wanting a common name for your baby. The name we picked for my son (Zachary/Zach) was/is a bit too common for my liking, but his dad really liked it so I caved :) Plus it's not TOO common, definitely not like Aiden or Jacob! (no offense to anyone)
Boys I Know Under 2 Years:
- Zachary (Zach)
- Thomas (Tommy)
- Aleksandr (Alek - weird spelling bc there's no E - traditional Slavik spelling)
- Maximilian (Max)
- Jacob (Jake)
- Caiden/Kaden
- Logan
- Liam
- Nevan
- Charles (Charlie)
- Aiden
- Henry
Good Luck! And I'm curious to know what the name is! You'll have to post it after you have your baby or something :-)

With my oldest son (who turns 6 on Monday), we named him Jacob, because we both love the name. It turns out that that was the most popular boys name in 2001! Who knew?? There were 3 Jacob's in his class in preschool two years ago (so my son was referred to as Jacob S.), but this past year in preschool he was the only one. There's also another little boy on our block named Jacob and they play together a lot. :) I tend to call MY Jacob, "Jacob" or "Jack" but call the other one "Jake" to tell them apart.
My youngest son is almost 3 and is named Henry...it's becoming a more and more popular name for little boys! Although, I think it's fun to come across another one, because it's still not super common.
Anyway, good luck with your pregnancy, and congrats!! Whatever you name him, he'll be special. :)

I have a 4 month old baby boy, and we went back and forth on two name for him. We debated on Spencer and Boston, and finally decided that Spencer was the name we liked. We were worried too that Spencer will become popular, but I think that their are other names that are coming back that are going to be more popular than Spencer. Don't worry to much about it will suddenly become popular. Think of it in a long run, is it something he is going to like when he's 70 years old. That's what we did, yeah it may become popular, but so far this year, we have only heard of 3 Spencers in our area being born. It's a great name, so choose something that will work for your child, adn you think he will be a good grown Let us know what you choose.

Here is something funny. almost 5 years ago we had our second baby boy. We never had any boy names, so we had to look in books. We settled on Aiden. We even spelled it differently than the book, they spelled it Aidan. Our son was born in March, by the end of that year his name was #2, the previous year it had been like 89! We thought we were doing well, now our son is surrounded by other Aidens, but at least he is the older in the group. Also funny, when we told people his name before he was born, they would always say " wow that's unique, where did you find that name?" Ironic isn't it?
We have 3 boys, Maxwell, Aiden and Owen. In the end it did't matter if someone else had thename or not, your child will have his own personality and put his own twist on what ever name you give him!

We have Owen, 5 years. He's named after a book my husband lent to me while we were dating. Samuel (likes to be called "Sammy") is 3. We chose it because it is Biblical. Our son to be born will be Isaac, another Biblical name. I know that the names are common now, but we had deeper meanings attached and couldn't think of chaning them because they were popular. I'd say stick with the name you like.

Wow...nothing seems to get responses like a name discussion. It's late, but I had to get my two cents in. My son is Gustave, named after my grandfather, pronounced the German way rather than the Scandinavian, and we call him Gus. I've heard a few (no one I know) so I'm glad it's uncommon but not too weird.
One thing to consider is trendy as opposed to popular. Michael is a popular name, but it's been solid throughout the ages. Names like Caden and Jackson are really going to brand a child as being born in the early 2000s (trust me, I know..."C." is one of the top ten names of the 60s and then it vanished). If that doesn't matter to you, no problem. But any trendy name is going to lose its shine in 10 or 20 years, and then will make it really easy to age a person. Think of our moms...how come we don't name little girls Linda or Cheryl any more?

I had the same problem with my kids. Our first was named Ainsley and that's a pretty rare name to find, although I have heard a couple. Then our other daughter is named Peyton and when I picked it out it wasn't so popular and then it was EVERYWHERE! Now we have 2 little boys that we are adopting and we want to rename them because they have gender neutral names and we don't like that for boys. We are going to name the younger one Jackson and call him Jack. I know it's popular but most strong boy names are. The other one we are going to name William and call him Will. It is also popular but I figure that with the struggles they will have with identity, just from being adopted, it will help to have strong manly names.
Best Wishes,
J.
