Its probably not dirt, just dead skin cells she is scraping up from herself and others. Nothing to fret about. Keep her nails short so she doesn't scratch herself by kind of peeling the nails off or using the baby clippers. The whole human race gets this under their fingernails, us adults just wash it away more effectively. =)

It might not be dirt. It might be fuzz from your clothes or blankets that gets under the nails when she grabs on. The same thing happened to my little guy.

My baby gets dirty nails too. It's just like what all the other moms say with dirt, fuzz, etc. I just make it a habit to clean up his hands throughout the day since he likes to stick them in his mouth. So usually when I change his diaper, I clean up his hands, face and neck. I've learned to stop buying anything fuzzy too. The lint just end up in all of the baby's little nooks. I'm afraid he'll end up eating it when he sucks on his hands. I also clip his nails every couple of days. Baby fingernails grow very fast. So definitely try to keep up with them for safety and hygiene. Good luck!

Hi Rachel So your 10 week old has dirt under her fingers? Do you bathe her everyday and wash her hands good? If so, take her to her pediatrician and see what the problems is. Because at her age she can't grab onto to anything that well.

I'm laughing because I went throgh this & always worried people thought my house was filthy! It's totally normal! Keep her nails short & let them soak when you bathe her.

I had the same problem with my son, who is now 18 mos. When he was tiny his fingernails got so dirty. According to my mother-in-law he got formula on his finger which gets sticky and then it would attract dirt under his fingernails. She said the dirt just came from touching our clothes his blankets, ect. I used to scrub his nails with a baby tooth brush to get them clean and sometimes that didn't work. The best way to keep them clean, was to keep them very short. When they got dirty I'd scrub them and then clip them. That seemed to help until he was old enough to play in the tub. Then the soaking action helped.
