Baby clothes...how Much to Buy?

My daughter is 2.5 yrs old. When I was pregnant with her I bought way too many clothes. Some things she never wore! I am now pregnant with our second due in 12wks!! I am wondering other than pj's and onesies how many outfits do other moms typically buy for each size? I am trying not to go overboard this time! Thanks!

What can I do next?

Depends how often you do laundry. =)

I'd figure 2-3 outfits per day plus pajamas. If you do laundry twice per week, then you'll need 10-12 outfits. At least, that's how I did it. Seemed to work out fine.

Congrats on your new addition!

I didn't really have to buy much of anything. A friend of mine gave me 7 bags of baby clothes! Some of them still had tags on them. I would not buy just a whole lot of anything else until they are maybe a year old.

If you still have onesies/pj's from your older one, that's something less to buy (unless it's all pink and you're having a boy)
I wouldn't buy much sizes in advance, only a few outfits on the 3 months size and then, buy more as needed. Some babies do need more than others.
For example, my daughter was a big baby (nearly 10 pounds at birth). Right from when she left the hospital she was in the 3 months size. She grew up fast and was in the 6 months in no time.
I had a lot of nice outfits in birth size and 3 months that she never wore.
But, she needed a lot of 6 months because she has reflux and would always burp outside of the bib/burp clothes, usually on her long sleeves.
Now she is 11 months and have been in size 18 months for several weeks.
So, my advice is to buy to minimum that you can leave with and buy more as need comes.

if you have anothe girl you wont have to buy much - if you saved everything.

how often do you do laundry?/ I do laundry every day.. so my kids could really get by with 4 outfits.. but they have about 12 outifits..

I would think 1 weeks worth of clothes would be enough.. 2 outfits per day + pajamas for a new baby. that way if you are behind in laundry the baby still has clothes to wear.

I have learned what to buy ahead.. there are only a few things that I buy ahead. shoes , jackets and coats... other things are too hard to predict what will fit at what season.. so I dont buy ahead.

I agree with the other Moms.

If you're due in June, the good news is you don't have to worry about seasonal changes.

We had a June baby, and I used long-sleeve onesies under things if I was worried about him being cold.

Depending on how many loads of laundry you want to do each week, I'd recommend planning for 2 outfits/day + pajamas if you use them separately.

Why don't you swap the stuff your daughter has outgrown for the new baby? Try a site called GumdropSwap (http://gumdropswap.com). You can swap from anywhere in the US by sending the clothes your kids outgrow to this kids boutique in CT. An option if you want to get some value out of all the money you spent instead of flat out donating. As long your things are in good condition they don't turn down anything because of brand, size or season. They take everything unlike resale store like Once Upon a Child! They give you points to shop on the website and send the clothes that fit your kids. It's great if you don't have time, patience or know how to do consignment, Ebay, craigslist, tag sale, etc.

I like to do laundry only once a week if I can get away with it. So everyone in my house has enough clothes for 8 days, if all goes well :-)

Since your baby is due in the summer, I would buy a bunch of rompers and onesies. (probably around 15 total = 2 outfits a day).

Good luck. I always tell myself that at each size change I will NOT buy too much, and always end up doing just that!
