I am going to be a first-time mom in less than six weeks (due March 7) and had a wardrobe question. We received mainly newborn onesies from our baby shower and I realized that since it will be fairly chilly in March, the baby will probably need more than just this. However, I noticed pants are not sold separately so I would just have to buy new outfits and use those pants. Are the onesies somewhat useless since my baby will be born in March or is there another solution besides just wrapping him/her in a blanket?

People definitely do love to give just "onesies" as gifts and then you are left to find bottoms. I found pants sold alone that went with some of the onesies we were given at the gap, carters, and even target had some cute solid colored pants! good luck!
I'm sure you have at least one or two newborn outfits. And that will be plenty for the first few weeks. When your little one is born use the onsies and a blanket. If your little one is cold you'll know and you can put more on and then go out shopping. You may find that at home your baby is perfectly happy in a onsie if you keep your home warm enough. Onsies are also more comfy.
But wait until your baby is born because you never know what your going to need. My first was 9 lbs and surprisingly newborn outfits drowned her because she was very short, but she grew into and out of newborn clothes very quickly. My second was only 8 lbs but could barely wear newborn clothes because she was so tall.
We love the onesies... even for our 22 month old. They can rewear any pants over and over unless they get pee, poop or barf on them. With all the laundry you will be doing, 2 pairs of pants will probably do. Check out the clearence racks.
Onesies are also geat for under their sleepers to keep them that much warmer.... especially at night or on blustery days. It also keeps them wamer during changing time. They're not naked on top. Don't forget that the days may be warmer, but nights are still very cool. Dressing them in layers is great for them so you can peel off the warm cloths and add some later in the day.
Okay you need to put a diaper and onesie on your baby and then you still need to dress baby in a sleeper, a gown, or some other comfy little outfit. Babies need to be layered and they always need to have one more layer than their mom's and dad's...that is kind of a rule of thumb if you have 1 layer on baby needs 2...and so on and so forth. If you are trying to save money, then just buy a bunch of footed sleepers with snaps or that zip up and put the onesies underneath the sleeper outfit that baby is wearing and still baby should be swaddled..they don't regulate their body temp. as well or as regularly as we do. Onesies can be used all year round as an undershirt for the infant. I used them on my kids all the time and I think you'll find it very usefull all year round. Enjoy your little one.
I loved the Old Navy / Gap cotton pajamas & socks for my girls. THey are super soft and last a long time. Baby will kick of blankets by 3 months so you will need to keep them covered neck to toes until it's hot in the house. You can buy pants separately at babies r us, outlet stores and online, but I never had a problem finding them at Mervyns. There is also a bundle-type of blanket for strollers where the bottom is sewn closed and then has buttons up the front that you could use when taking the baby in/out the house.
Hi. My kids wear onesies under their "jammies" at night and under their clothes during the day during the winter. Keeps 'em nice and warm. Good luck.
Congrats on your upcoming arrival! My little ones spent over half of there day swaddled and napping, so onesies were perfect or they got too hot. Even their infant car seat can get hot, if they're tucked in nice with a blanket. You can never have enough onesies. A few soft jammies with the feet are great to have for when they start sleeping without the swaddle or regularly "breaking out" of it.
My second was born in Feb and a couple of weeks later we went to Chicago to visit my sister. Since my first was born in May, we didn't have very many winter things for a newborn. I was able to buy pants by themselves and on sale at many places since they're clearing out for spring and summer styles.
Children's Place outlet at Ontario Mills have a lot of things, as well as the sleepers. Some very fashionable ones too. Baby Gap and Gymboree have good sales now also. At Target or Walmart they sell pants by themselves as well. They are with the next to the packaged onesies/socks/etc.
Im not sure what area you are in but I was able to find just bottoms at Target and Old Navy. Im sure other baby places like Carters have them too. Good luck
Congratulations on your upcoming baby! I just became a mom 6 days ago, too! I found some amazing outfits from another mamasource member - www.stylease.com I think. They are one piece and look like complete outfits - they are the BEST!!!!! Good luck with your delivery and I hope you are as lucky as we are with sleeping through the night - our precious angel sleeps in luxurious 3 hour stretches, which gives us lots more sleep than we thought we'd be getting.

Having the onesies wrapped around the babies body makes them feel secure. You will only need socks and lots of diapers other then the onesies for the first three months. Newborn babies will be sleeping and growing so the onesies will be more comfortable. Newborns tend to sleep in the "Fetal" position so the legs will also be covered. I. B
I have a 3 month old and have found that I didn't use the onesies as much as I thought I would. I put him in a lot of cute one piece outfits (old navy and gap have a ton) which was easier and cuter. I agree with others that you should get some good jammies w/ the feet attached. My baby wore those and then we swaddled him for bed.
For pants: carters sells pants by themselves. They come in sets of 2, are comfy & cheap. I know that they have them at Macy's & babysrus- maybe kohls or mervyns too. I loved putting these over the onesies for my little guy. They kept him warmer & looked cuter than just having a onesie on.
Definitely make sure you have newborn size (up to 7/8 lbs). My son actually wore these until he was about 11lbs- they are made big and a lot of the 0-3 clothes didn't fit him until he was over 2 months (he was almost 9 lbs at birth too!).

I am a mother of 2, both born in cold climates. I suggest you buy a few one-piece fleece jumpers that are designed to be worn over the onesie. You're right, just the onesie isn't enough. Check out the Carter's website, Hanna Andersson, the Gap and others like this. You only need one or two to start but they are a nice way to keep baby snuggled while you're holding him/her. And a toasty baby is a happy, sleeping baby:) Good luck!
