Infant Baby Acne - Pearland, TX

My 5 week old has baby acne. My first child didn't have it and it looks like it hurts but everything I've read basically says it doesn't. If you've had a child with baby acne can you tell me what you did, if anything to help it clear up? And how long does it typically stay?

Thank You!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all the wonderful input and suggestions. His skin is already looking rather dry to me so maybe it is already going away? We shall see. Thanks again, it is so nice to talk to others that have wonderful input. And I appreciate the "congratulations" as well.

Arbonne has a great product for babies. My kids use it and their skin is so soft and it looks amazing. It is fragrance free and doesn't irritate the skin. It also helps eczema, rosacea and sensitive skins. If you want more info., please feel free to contact me anytime.

I have a 13 week old who had bad baby acne and I used Cetaphil to bathe him with and used aquaphor on his face and it helped a lot.

My son had terrible baby acne at 5 weeks but my daughter didn't have much of anything. My son's acne was gone in a matter of 2 weeks. I wouldn't use anything on it or pick. It is a phase that passes rather quickly, most of the time.

Hi there, my older son had baby acne.. The best thing and it is all natural is colloidal oatmeal.. You can find it at Walgreens or CVS.. Sometimes it is with the baby products.. You may need to ask the pharmacist.. When you put your baby in for his/her bath, make a little paste out of the oatmeal and rub it around wherever the acne is. Let it sit for a few minutes and then wash it off.. It comes in a box and then in individual packages, one package should last your several treatments. This stuff works like a charm... Congratulations.. J.

My doctor told me that part of it was, that they would spit or drool while sleeping and that they would get it on their face. I changed a small pad I had under face when I laid her down and wiped her face when she woke up and before going to sleep.

My first son had it terrbibly and my second son didn't. strange how it affects different babies. But it just goes away on it's own. don't put anything on it. No medicated or scented creams. just use eucerin or aquaphor lotion and wash with water. no soap. use "free and clear" laundry detergent to avoid irritation. It will clear up over time. It doesn't bother them, it just looks like it would. baby acne is different than adult acne. Congratulations on your sweet baby.

My son had it and my pediatrician prescribed a cream for his little cheeks. It was actually two creams and I had to apply it like three times per day. It worked great. So if it is bothering you, I bet your pediatrician can help. Congratulations on your new little one:)

my 2nd baby had it pretty bad. i was told/read that you should just use a wet washcloth to gently clean it several times a day (no soap, just water) and not put anything on it like lotion, powder, sunscreen, etc. b/c that could irritate it and make it flare up more. also, make sure you pat his face dry when he drools. that's all i did and it went away on its own by about 2 1/2 mo. old =)

My baby is just getting over it. The only thing that seemed to help was bathing her with Aveeno oatmeal bath treatment for babies and using the Aveeno baby lotion. The biggest change was when my breastmilk dried up and I quit breastfeeding. I recently posted about it and got great responses. Ours hit right at Christmastime when we had loads of family in and lots of pics. It drove me a lot crazier than it did her. Now I'm trying to resolve the dry, dry skin it left behind.

J., Speak to your doctor, if it is just in one area of the body then it may just be baby acne, BUT if it is also in the diaper area or under the arms then it could be staph. My granddaughter came home from the hospital in Hawaii with MRSA. The hospital told my daughter it was baby acne. If it doesn't clear up then have it cultured. When I got to HI I said THIS IS NOT baby acne. We took the baby and had them culture the sores and the baby was admitted into the hospital for an IV drip. The hospital later confessed that there was a MRSA outbreak in that hospital. You can't be too careful these days. PS: My granddaughter is a year old and fine now.

I agree with Alicia J. My daughter had it too and that is what the doctor said. Putting anything on their face makes it really dry and often worse. I know for us, once I started wiping her face, it went away soon after.

Hi J.,
I am in the same boat. My 7 week old daughter has had it since 4 weeks. I am a "research buff" and have looked up everything I can on the subject because it drives me nuts and I just want to scrub it all off!!

It seems to be a reaction to our hormones still in their system. It should disappear on it's own with a month to two months. I have already started to see it diminishing and hope that it will be completely gone in the next two weeks. It is NOT a food allergy or defect in the baby whatsoever. Food allergies normally show digestively before they show on the skin.

Here is the advice I have gathered and utilized:

1) Patience - you won't be able to get it to go away so stop trying. (and DON'T pick at it...it will scar!)

2) Bathing - to keep the oil/bacteria from forming keep your baby's skin clean. I do a bath every other night and wash down with a wet washcloth on the opposite nights. I saw a huge decrease in bumps when I started doing this. (no products are necessary, just water)

3) Lotions/Cream - don't use them! They can make it worse. I have found two dry spots on her cheeks that I use the Johnson's Soothing Naturals Stick Balm on. That helps alot with the dry flakey skin and cradle cap.

4) Body Temp - be aware that it is somewhat aggravated by heat. When my daughter falls asleep on one of us the cheek she lays on always appears much worse than the rest of her face. When she sleeps in her bouncy chair it almost goes away completely!

If all else fails you might try going to a fragrance free laundry detergent and softener. I did that anyway just to be on the safe side!

Like I said...I know it's ugly but it will not last forever and is not a sign of things to come in puberty! My 10 year old and 2 yr old had it and they both now have BEAUTIFUL skin!

Good luck and I hope this helps!

I believe it is probably from a food allergy. Take note when it occurred, dairy is probably your main culprit if you breast feed or their has been a change in formula. She may also be very sensitive to chemicals. Check the products that you use from detergent (harsh phosphates, dyes, fragrance, bleach) to lotions and soaps. Avoid parabens, D&C colors, propylene glycol, lauryl sulfates, fragrance. These are all toxic chemicals. I like to use Melaleuca or 7th generation cleaning products. For baby products I like Aubrey or Avalon (they are both organic which decreases chemical and pesticide exposure). www.luckyvitamin.com or Whole Foods. Sometimes using natural things like oatmeal, avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, vitamin E make for good ointments-the less ingredients the better. I hope this helps. C

My baby had acne off and on for the first three months of his life. I did absolutely nothing and made sure not to pick at it at all (and that's very hard for me since I'm a picker). It just cleared up on it's own and now he is 8 months old and has had a beautiful complexion for months. I know baby acne isn't fun for pics, but it's part of who your baby is right now. So hang in there and don't sweat it.

Hi J., My daughter (3 months) had it. My son, now 4 didin't. It is just the baby's skin getting used to the outside world and also he/she is loosing your hormones. Think how bad you skin would be if it was moist for 9 months and then really dry all the sudden =) It only lasted a few weeks and now she is fine. All I did was gently wipe her face with a washcloth during her bath. No soap since that will just dry it out more. It will be fine. Good Luck!!!

My daughter had baby acne as well and it does look really painful. It didn't seem to bother her as much as it did me. Our nurse told us to use selsun blue shampoo on her head and wipe with a rag on her face. I was afraid that it would be too harsh on her skin so I would mix it with water and then use a washrag to rub it on her face. I would notice that when she would cry or be hot it would look alot worse. Hers lasted about 2 months or so and it went away as quickly as it came. Also try not to put lotions and creams on his face that may have fragrance or chemicals, etc...Aveeno naturals are good. Good luck!! C.

Breast milk. Express a little milk, smooth it around just a little and let it dry. Repeat at each feeding until you like the results. It's not harmful and is all natural. To top it iff it works!

One of my boys had it - the other one didn't. We made sure not to scrub his little face too hard, but otherwise just left it alone. It went away in about 3 or 4 weeks.

Hello,
My daughter developed infant acne at 3 weeks old due to a milk allergy. I was breast-feeding and decided to have milk since I hadn't had any during my pregnancy due to the fact that it nauseated me. The next day (after I drank the milk) my babies face was COVERED with acne. The doctor said it was a reaction to the milk I drank and to eliminate it from my diet. I did and the acne cleared up. She later developed eczema and other allergies which increase in severity proportional to the amount of dairy she consumes. I have a little on my website about eczema and food sensitivities and plan to put more up later. www.eatingwellbeingwell.net
Hope this helps some,
A. :~D
