A friend of mine is 12 weeks pregnant and suffers from debilitating migrains every month. She did take Percocet before she even knew she was pregnant. She ends up throwing up, can't eat, and in tons of pain for days. She is scared to take anything for the pain, but I think she needs to. Does anyone have any experiences like this? Her doctor told her it was fine to take Tylenol with codeine and others but when she looked them up, they were pregnancy class C drugs. I feel terrible for her and want to help!

What can I do next?

They are a class C, but if she is not taking them on a regular basis, she is proabably okay to use them when needed. Being in pain, vomiting, not eating....this all adds stress to your body which is probably more dangerous to the baby. If I was in her situation, I would take the T3 only when nescessary. The only time she may not want to use it is when she gets closer to the end of her pregnancy. I would proabably stick to T3 and try to avoid the Percocet (it causes less respiratory distress on the fetus)

Pregnancy category "C" normally means there aren't as many studies done in pregnant women, so use is based on benefit to patient vs. risk if it isn't taken as well as a doctor's discretion. A doctor wouldn't prescribe it if it wasn't safe. The ones that are completely contraindicated in pregnancy is Category "X" (which means it will cause harm to a baby and cannot be used under any circumstances).

Class B is safe but class A is safest I think but that was for anti-depressants. I'd get another opinion from another doctor.

When I would get a migrain while pregnant the dr told me the only thing that was safe to take was extra strength tylenol. If it got too bad then I was to take two asprin and drink a WARM COKE. No other pop but coke and drink it with in 5/10 mins. That would ease the pain and open the blood vessels in the brain. It did work. I tried it with pepsi one time because I didn't have any coke, but it didn't work. I had to have my hubby go get me some coke and when my four hours was up and could take more asprin I took it with coke and I was atleast able to function again. Wishing her good luck~
