Anyone know (or have you taken) if Vicodin is safe to take while pregnant. I was given a prescription for it today (not from my regular doctors), the nurse told me it was safe, but I forgot to ask what class it was on the pregnancy list. I'd appreciate any help. Somehow I managed to pull/strain some muscles in my chest wall up into my shoulder and tylenol wasn't helping with the pain.

Vicodin is in pregnancy class C, which means that they really don't know whether or not it will harm the fetus. Doctors prescribe meds to women in this class often while they are pregnant, but it is one where you need to weight the risk vs. the benefits. (This comes from my husband, who is a pharmacist).
Ask your pharmacist, he or she would be able to give you the best information about any specific drug and if it can be safely used during pregnancy. He or she might also be able to offer a recommendation for substitutes if you decide the Vicodin isn't completely safe (of course you're doctor will have to call in another Rx to the pharmacy).
Hope your pain gets better! One thing that works great for us when we have muscle strains is a warm compress. We actually have a rice bag that we put in the microwave to warm and lay it on the sore area for about 15-20 min and it helps a lot. It stays warm for a long time too!
Not much help, just a thought. I pulled neck muscles while I was prg with my 3 yr old. It was so very painful. My drs. prescribed tylenol 3 and I still use it. My ob was the 1st to give it to me and my family Dr. gave me new scripts for it and says it is very safe.

I wouldn't take it if I were pregnant. Call your pharmacist and ask him or her. They are usually very approachable and anxious to teach patients about their meds. Frankly, I would stick with warm compresses and rest. Of course that's silly advice knowing you have a 19 month old, but maybe Daddy or Grandma can watch the toddler for awhile.

Vicodin is a pregnancy class c, which means that they are not sure what the affects are. I work in L&D and have heard of pregnany women taking percocet while they were pregnant. If it makes you uneasy, I would just call your OB and ask if there is something else that you could take. Good Luck
Just looked it up for you... pregnancy risk category C: either studies in animals have shown adverse effects and there are no studies on women or studies on women and animals are not available. Drug should only be given if potential benefit justifies potential risk.
There are other non-opiod analgesics (like tylenol) that focus more on reducing inflammation which is likely to be where your pain is coming from. If it is an option ask your doctor about diclofenac sodium (category B if in 1st or 2nd trimester). or another opioid analgesic that is category B is oxycodone.

I am not sure about that one. I was prescribed Demoral(sp?) when I was pregnant with my twins at about 5 months because of Kidney stones. That had no ill affects on either of them and it made the excruciating pain go away nicely. Good Luck! J. mother of 3
Hi, I pulled a muscle in my back when I was pregnant with my 3rd child. They gave me a perscription for Vicoden, I used them a couple times and then I was better. I was in the first few weeks of pregnancy. She is very healthy now and she just turned 3 in May. How far along are you and if I may ask what is it for ??? W.
