Appropiate Dollar Amount for a Grad

What do family members do for grads now ? My neice is graduating, they live far away and hardly get to spend time with her and not as close as I hoped we would be over the 5 years, but she was certainly a lot more involved in our family 13 and younger.
So what is a good amount of money that kids get these days for graduating from HS ? From a father/mother or uncle aunt or grandparent ? our range is 100- 300 Is that too much ?

What can I do next?

All these answers are great....remember she will have a lot more events, college, wedding...etc. that you will be investing in.

I think what you should also do is ask the parents. How is her behavior, grades, attitude....I think these are qualities that warrant a proper amount.

My nephew is graduating HS this year. We don't see each other often but it is not the type of relationship that we never talk, email, visit once a year or so. They are in PA and we are in TX so visiting often is not something we do.

We are sending $200.

What I would actually do is give her the $100 as her gradtuation gift and then purchase the remaining $200 in giftcards of $50 each and then send them to her every 3 months during her 1st year of college!!!!

That way she can buy herself something pretty or go out to dinner or buy replacment books or whatever as she needs them. You could get the AMEX gift cards which she can use just about anywhere.

Not only will she appreciate the money, but she'll appreciate getting a card with some well wishes and maybe some pictures of you guys out of the blue. Will help her feel connected when she is alone at school.

That's very generous-another nice thing to do is put money on their account at college.

We give $25 to random friends $50 for our kids best friends the ones we have actually had a lot of contact with. And $100 to nieces and nephews. Our own kids get a big grad party and money thruout the college years

$300?? from one pair? Wow. Very generous.

I usually send $20 - $50 from my family of 4 depending on who it is and how close I am to them.

Just casual friend's kids I send $20. Kids I used to have in my daycare, if they send an announcement, I send $20. A couple really terrific kids from daycare whos families I have stayed in contact with.. $50.
But when my son and my neice both graduated the same year we made our plan. I wanted to give my son $100 and my sister planned to give her daughter $100. So we each sent $100 to eachother's kid and then gave our own kid $20. So they each got what we wanted to give but the kids thought it came from the aunt. It took them a while to figure that one out,,lol
Just the other day I recieved the first announcement for a college graduation for our favorite daycare kid. I'm thinking he will get $50. And I know I will get a nice thankyou note from him. I think $300 is way too much.

Wow, wish you were my aunt when I graduated from high school! That is very generous of you. I think $100 would be very nice for your niece. I like to give graduates a check in the amount of the year they are graduating, so it would be $20.11 this year. Then you could do the rest in gift cards to different places, like to Target for stuff or restaurants and things. Such a big moment for them and anything you are able to give will be well received and appreciated, I'm sure.

It really depends on what you can afford. I wouldn't give that much money expecting that when your kids graduate that her parents would do the same, but if I were your niece I would be extatic! Is she planning to go to college? Maybe you could give her $100 now and $200 when she graduates college - and that would add up to the $300 that you are considering. You might also want to consider that if you give her X amount for graduating highschool right now and are unable to do around the same in 4 years when she graduates from college, her feelings may be hurt?? You never know with people.....LOL
