everyone has told me that when i get the iud that my periods would probably stop all together. well, it has been 17 months since i had it put in, and i am so unregular it is driving me insane. i spotted for several months after i had it put in and now i spot for two weeks and then not for two weeks and then spot agian for two weeks. its like i have a period twice a month. i have had issues in the past with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and the symptoms would always be worse during my menstrual cycles ( night sweats, hotflashes, etc) now that i have to go thru two cycles a month i have to deal with these symptoms more often. i want to give it up. i'm trying to get my husband to think about getting snipped, but that isn't going over too well. will this spotting for two weeks ever go away? i want to take it out but am very scared of getting pregnant again. i have never had luck with birth control. nothing has ever seemed to work for me. please help. any advice?

What can I do next?

I've had the IUD for only about 7 months, so I'm not that experienced. But I was told your periods COULD stop or become lighter, not positively will. I'm still very irregular, pretty much spotting the entire month. Don't know if that helped or not.

I have had my IUD for 4 months I think. It's not to bad. I do have spotting here and there. But will go about 3 or 4 weeks with out any. I've had 1 actual period on it. Condersing I can't remember to take b/c and didn't want to have my tubes tied. This was a great way to go. I do have a friend that has had the IUD I think a year now, and she still spots. Even though the Dr has said all this should stop, as his wife had it and had no problems with it. We'll see though I guess

Though I talking to you about a looonnnnggggg time ago, I also used the IUD's. Not all of them are the same....During my days we used the "copper 7" one year the doctor I was seeing did not have the copper 7 so he inserted the "coil"....what a difference!....I had to have it removed after 30 days of non-stop bleeding....so my suggestion?....try a different one until you find the one that best suits you....GOOD LUCK

I have the copper iud. I've had it in for 3 yrs now and my periods are so heavy that I'm now anemic. I really want to get rid of it. I can't go anywhere when I have my period cause it's so bad. I would talk to your doctor about other birth control ASAP. Good Luck!!!

Hi M.,

I'm not sure what IUD you have, but I have Paragard, and I was told (correctly) that my periods would be longer and heavier than ever. I can't use hormonal birth control because of migraine problems so this is my only option. It's worth the convenience, but I seem to have my period for 2 weeks out of every month, it lasts so long. I'm not irregular at all, I always get it around the first, but it lasts for over 10 days.

I've told my husband he is definitely getting snipped after our next kid or this IUD expires. It's an easy outpatient procedure and as much as I like the convenience, I don't want to go through this again. It's all on him next.

Sorry for the trouble girl. That sounds horrable. I also get bad pms symptoms I couldn't imagine going through it twice a month. I would definately stop using the ring(is that what it is, or something like it) and use condoms until your husband finally agrees to get snipped. You guys sound like a fun family, where do you live in Florida? My husband and I and our son are down here in Naples. We are always looking for down to earth people to hang with. Write me if you like.

I have had the Mirena IUD for a year and a half now and have not had too many problems. The first few months I did experience spotting, nothing heavy or anywhere near what my periods were but it was pretty inconsistent. Now I may have one day a month of spotting but mostly I don't have a period anymore. I have had very bad luck in the past with birth control as well. I tried the pill which on top of having to remember to take it every day my body would reject it after a year and I would have to switch brands. Tried the patch but ended up with severe headaches and after the reports came out about the high risk of blood clots I decided it wasn't a safe alternative anymore. I am very happy with my IUD but every woman's body reacts differently to things. You may want to talk to your doctor. There could be something else going on causing these symptoms. I hope things get better for you.

The suggestion to talk to your MD is the best one I think. There are million different types of birth control, and different versions of each. If I was in your shoes, I would talk to the MD and ask him if you could try another type of IUD... cause there are different brands and different models... or if he thinks that based on your symptoms, you should try another type of birth control. My bestfriend got the Meridia IUD, and she stopped having a period three months ago. After two blood and urine prego tests of negative, her doc said that her IUD was known to do that to women. That one is, I believe, the size of your palm, and I am scheduled to get it inserted when I get my monthly flow, which should be soon!

They have other brands and models, so you could explore the different options. I also have a friend that is on the Neuva Ring... and she likes that. Again, talk to your MD... Good luck!

Doesn't your dr. offer any alternatives? There are so many forms of birth control out there other than the IUD. What about an implantable BC? I would speak to your dr. about this immediately. There's always surgery. Good luck.

I have had the 10 year cooper IUD for almost 3 years now. I have not had any problems. My periods have changed a little but nothing drastic. I was never told that my periods would stop. My DR. suggested this IUD because I take medications daily and she was afraid that other B.C.'s all of which have some sort of hormones would affect my meds. The 10 year cooper has no hormones. I believe that this is the best but everyone is different. I get prego very easy. I was told that I would never have children on my own. But after I had my first it just kept happening. I have 3 girls all with in 3 years of each other. I have not have to worry about getting prego for 3 years now and it is such a relieve.
Call your MD. not sure which IUD you have but maybe a different one will work better for you. Or some other kind of bc like everyone else has suggested. I just wanted to tell my story because I haven't had any problems with mine. Good luck hope you and your MD can figure something out.
P.S. My hubby won't even consider getting snipped either so your not alone there.
