Anyone with a Good or Bad Experience at St. John's Hospital Detroit

Wondering if anyone had a good or bad experience with giving birth at St. John's Hospital Detroit? I have a friend who told me today that while her labor was great, her experience afterwards was not. She said that they do not have a nursery, even at night time, and in her experience the nursing staff only checked on her once a shift and were far from helpful. Wondering if this is the norm or the exception?

Thanks,

Nickie

That does not seem like the norm. I'm only familiar with the Beaumont hospitals, though, so can't speak for other hospitals in the area.

I had 2 births there and think they're great. You want to keep your baby with you anyway unless there's a problem. They saved my preemie granddaughter's life! We are forever grateful to them. They really care.

I only trust William Beaumont Hospitals-they are clean, well staffed, excellent OB/GYN care and i mean EXCELLENT! (I have 7 children) 4 born at Beaumont!

My twins were born there and I had an amazing experience. I can not say enough great things about them. They had asked me if I would like the babies taken to the nursery, but I declined - so they must have one. And the nursing staff was there if I needed them immediately, but were overly annoying and coming around constantly. They pretty much let me determine how much help I needed from them as far as the babies were concerned and with me, they did what they had to do, but didn't hover. I would highly recommend St. John's based on my experience, and I wouldn't hesitate to give birth there again.

Hi Nickie!

I'm really confused about them not having a nursery. I had both of my children there, and they certainly had a night time nursery then! (My son is 5.5 years old and my daughter is almost 4). I'm really hoping that hasn't changed in the last 4 years, because I'm due with # 3 in September and I need that nursery! (My husband won't ever sleep in the hospital overnight because "it's not comfortable" (oh, excuse ME), so I do need to use the nursery to catch a few much-needed winks!) My friend's son is 2 years old and they had the nursery then as well. Again, hoping they didn't change that fact!

I really had a great experience with St. John both times. My son was born just over 4 weeks early and had to spend 4 days in the special care nursery, and the staff was GREAT with him, and me! Like someone else mentioned, with my first baby, the nursing staff came around ALL the time. With the second, not so much. Maybe they figured I didn't need as much help the second time around (and I really didn't). But they do carry these phones and give you their 4 or 5 digit phone number, so if you need them, you can call them anytime.

I'm sorry to hear your friend didn't have such a good experience there...I really do think that is the exception, though! And I'm hoping she let the nursing manager know about her bad experience!

I delivered both my boys at St. John's and was happy there. They do have a nursery, so I think you got some bad information. I was happy with my nurses as well. In fact, sometimes I felt like they were too helpful. Schedule a tour of their facilities and see what you think. The post-natal rooms were a little small, but I didn't really care about that. Good luck!

Your friend is correct that they do not have a nursery which was one of the reasons I LOVED it there. They promote bonding and rooming in with the baby. There are times when they do open the nursery but it is not often because they want the baby with the parents the whole time.

Both of my kids were born there and I loved it. My nurses were wonderful and it was perfect balance between being there when I needed them and giving me time to bond with my babies and my family. Whenever I asked for anything they were there right away but they did not intrude.

I have had friends deliver at other area hospitals and have HORRIBLE experiences. I cannot say enough good things about St. John Detroit though.

I don't know what your friend is talking about!! I had both of my girls there (baby #3 is on the way) and they DO have a nursery. I did notice though that with my 1st the nurses were in my room constantly to the point of annoying, and with my 2nd they didn't come around as much. I plan on having my next baby there so we will see what happens then, but I had nothing but good experiences there. I think alot has to do with your actual nurse, some are very tentative some are very laid back and only come around if needed. Hope this helps.

I just had my 3rd there about 8 months ago and they had a nursery. It is only certain hours that you can send the baby. I believe it was from 11pm - 6am. I have had all 3 of my chidlren there and I would say that the nurses make the experience. I have had good and bad nurses there. And when they were good, they were really awesome. The bad ones weren't too bad. I do believe that everyone there (the doctors too) are very capable and can handle any emergency or health issues that arise. I had a lot of complications with all 3 and I at least felt that they would do what was needed to keep myself and the baby healthy and safe.
That said, I would do more research, visit the hospital and also look into Beaumont though too. I have heard good things about them. You are doing the right thing on getting as much feedback and info as you can to make your decision.
