Hi. I am curious if anyone had luck with their hubby having a vasectomy reversal. I am divorced and getting married again and my fiance has a vasectomy. He has two kids and I have two kids. We saw a Urologist at La Grange Hospital and he quoted us $2400 as a self pay and since my fiance had his reversal 7 years ago, he didn't recommend having it after 8 years. Any advice, suggestions or ANYTHING at all.

Thank you.

My husband had his reversed, but it was after less than 2 years. We now have a 20-month old and I'm 19 weeks pregnant.

The reversal was self-pay, I believe. He had it done at the Northshore Hospital if I remember correctly.

Good luck!

Dear P.,

My husband and I have friends who went through this. They had 3 little boys within 4 years time, and the husband had a vasectomy. Approximately 6 years later they decided they wanted more kids, so the husband had it reversed. The doctor said that the husband would have to come in to provide a sample within 3 months time to see how well the reversal procedure had worked, but the wife was already pregnant by the time of the appointment. My thoughts on the subject were/are that the vasectomy is a quick, simple, relatively painless procedure. The reversal on the other hand is a slow, difficult operation involving microsurgery with no guarantees of success. This is a significant procedure, not without risk, with no guarantees of success, and as you already know, not covered by insurance. Your price quote seems very low. I would think that you would need an operating room, and anesthesiologist, the surgeon, and whatever support staff they require. I would hope that this would involve at least one overnight at the hospital, but with today's health care system who knows about that. All of that being said, people do have this procedure with success (see our friends -- 4th boy born 10 months after procedure). Good luck to you and your fiance!

My hubby didn't have it done but one of his good friends did and it was successful. They had baby #3 without any issue. I am not sure how long he had had the vasectomy for, but I do know that the longer you've had it, the less likely you are to get your fertility back after a reversal. However, I heard it was more like after 10 years there could be problems.

What I can also tell you is that it is VERY painful, much more painful than the original vasectomy. Part of the reason is because they have to "establish flow" during the procedure, which basically means they have to find a way to have the patient ejaculate while he is under general anesthesia. From what our friend said, this created a certain degree of soreness and bruising. Also, during the original procedure, they are just making a quick cut, usually with a laser. Now they have to reconnect the tube and this creates more pain and recovery time.

If you are willing, then go for it! Best of luck!

My SIL married a man who already had 2 kids and had a vesectomy. They went to Florida I believe to get it reversed and had 3 more kids. I do believe his was done after many years.

My husband had a vasectomy after baby #3 in 3.5 years. Then down the road we seriously regretted it. He had it reversed 6 years later and 9 months and 2 weeks later our daughter was born. Then 4 years later another daughter and then 4 years later a son. He had his reversal nearly 22 years ago. The insurance company that paid for the vasectomy, paid for the reversal. Not kidding. We had a secondary policy with my work and the whole thing ended up costing us meals and a hotel room for one night. We have not regretted it a day.
