We were considering adopting a greyhound in a year or two and I wanted to know from someone whose had one what things we should consider. Are they good with children? Do they shed alot or have any genetic problems they're predisposed to?

What can I do next?

Tassie's Hope (www.tassieshope.com) just pulled a greyhound out of a shelter that they need a home for. They say he's the sweetest thing EVER. You can contact Carol at Tassie's hope and ask her about it. Tell her Neesie's mom (that's me) heard about him from Astrid (she's the lady who pulled him from euthanasia). It's only 175$ for the adoption cost and they are wonderful people to work with and you can talk to them about your concerns too!

Best of Luck!

Our neighbor has about 5 that have all been rescued. When they let them out in the morning in the front yard they know there yard and even though they aren't on a leash they come out and play and do not leave there yard.

We never heard them bark and seem very well mannered.

We fostered one a few years back. They are great dogs with very sweet dispositions. The only issue we had with ours is that he had a few accidents in our house. I am not sure if that was an issue just with him or if it is with greyhounds in general.

I didn't own one, but my friend rescued one before. You might want to research the breed on the net because from what I understand, they can not sit like normal dogs due to how their backbone/spine is designed <for running>. Also, they can not bare any type of weight on their back because it could severly injure them. Something to consider with small kids (if you have them). Like I said, I didn't own one and I'm going from what my friend told me. You can google greyhounds and I believe it will bring up a great site with all kinds of info on the breed.

I worked for a vet and we had a couple of rescued racing greyhounds. They did have back problems (one moderate, one severe we did accupuncture on him). These dogs were so gentle and sweet and beautiful. They are quick learners from what I have seen. Just be careful of kids jumping on their back. Rescuing a greyhound is truly one of the most rewarding things you can do!

I, personally, have not. However, a friend of mine rescued one and says it is so gentle and sweet with her children. She's had it for about 4 years.
