Any Other Families Play 'Spoons'??

Hi All,
We had a big family game of Spoons last night! This game has been a family tradition of ours my whole life. I couldn't help myself from wondering how many other families out there play this ruthless, cut-throat, down right violent game with their loved ones....for fun? Our family takes this game *very* serious! Ha!

So, How many other families play?

~I am the second youngest of all the cousins in my family and as a kid, I remember not even paying attention to my cards, my strategy was to only watch the spoons...last night I taught that trick to my 9y/o and laughed out loud when he fought (and won) his Grandma (whom is the WORST looser in the world, ha!) for the last spoon!

So What Happened?

For those that are not familiar with the game, it is a card game w/a little aspect of musical chairs (kind of) thrown in.

Everyone sits in a circle, for our family we are usually on the floor, although we have played on a table but it wasn't long before everyone was standing. We use 2 decks of cards (b/c there are so many of us), dealer deals everyone 4 cards. In the middle sits 1less spoon than there are players. The dealer then starts handing 1 card at a time from the deck to the person to their right. That person picks up the card and then passes 1 card to the person on their right, so on and so forth, all the way around the circle. The object of the game is who ever gets 4 of a kind first reaches in and grabs a spoon (yes, it is better to be stealthy when you are the 1st to reach in & grab the 1st spoon) and then as *soon* as that happens everyone has to grab a spoon. Whom ever does not get a spoon is out. Take out 1 spoon from middle pile after every round, to coordinate with the 1 loosing person. You can only have 4 cards in your hand at once. The person at the end of circle (to the immediate left of dealer) just dis-crads their unwanted cards in a pile next to them.

We are a VERY competative family and this games gets real serious, real quick! SO much FUN!

! I do not recommend playing on a table... chairs WILL get knocked over and the table itself WILL get scratched by the spoons !

I haven't played that in years. We did at my grandmas a lot. It was fun and spoons did go flying.
I remember that my Grandma or Aunt would make colored ice cubes out of marischino cherry juice(green and red) and we would either eat them like that or put them in a glass of 7-up and then we play spoons.

My boys love it. We play it at my parents' cabin in the summer. We had to take a break for a while when my 13-year-old was younger because he took it a little too seriously and would get very upset when he lost. My mom used to play with us and she just died in October so it won't be the same anymore. I don't know if we'll be able to get a big enough group together to play. )-:

At our Thanksgiving dinner we went around the table and each person said something we appreciated about my mom. My dad said he was surprised none of us said "playing Spoons." He doesn't play, but he said many nights at the cabin when he went to bed early he could hear us still up, laughing and playing Spoons. Even my 90-year-old grandma played with us last summer. Sometimes she was clueless and that added to the humor, but she did pretty well and even got to the final round on more than one occasion. She laughed with us, even at her own expense sometimes.

What the heck is Spoons?
I am in the dark. I guess here in my neck of the woods, I have never heard of that game.
Can you, in your post, say how it is played?

I totally forgot about that game. Thanks for reminding me! I'll have to build that into our repertoire.

For years and years, our goto card games were Hearts and Euchre. We had major Euchre tournaments at Thanksgiving. But with the little ones, spoons would be a better game to play.

Spoons is a blast! It's the only time I remember seeing my uncle flying across the table and taking out his son ;-)

We play now when we get together with my brother and my four kids and they all LOVE it.

Great tradition!

We play this (along with pinocle and a few others) at all our family events! We've had broken fingers, scratches, and once, when we ran out of spoons, someone stabbed themselves with a fork, lmao!

So glad to know we're not the only ones who go crazy with the game!

We had to go to plastic spoons at a vacation rental to avoid breaking the glass cover on the table but we usually do play at a table. We take off rings (well not my wedding band, but I've removed the engagement ring b/c of the stone). It's a pretty intense game. It's not a family vacation without a round of spoons. There was a game of spoons on a cruise ship when DD was 1 and she sat in the middle of the table cackling and stole a spoon in the middle of the game. I also tend to watch the spoons or reach for a spoon after I've passed the card as a distraction. I have short arms and my SS has an unnaturally long reach so spoons often go a flyin'. The way we play you get assigned a letter when you lose and when you are SPOONS, you're out, and a spoon goes with you.

We used to play it Sunday evenings at my grandparent's house after dinner. As you mention it did get pretty crazy so we had to resort back to the more mellow card games Grandma and Pap Pap were used to (read: could tolerate ;-) Those were some fun times.

I completely forgot how to play. With your refresher, we may need to teach it to the new generation!!
