We just bought this version of the Canon Powershot and are, so far, very pleased. We had the A95 before and the things I miss having on the SD1000 are (1) the ability to grip the camera -- the SD1000 is 'flat' and a little harder to hold onto, (2) the flip around screen -- it was nice having that extra protection and (3) the ease of using alkaline or nickel metal hydride batteries -- the SD1000 uses a lithium ion battery (but you can easily buy 2 and always have a backup).
My husband loves the small size because he can put the camera in his pocket. The face detection feature is great! The picture quality is great. I really like the different choices in 'types' of pics you can take -- B&W, Color Swap, Color Accent, etc. The ability to edit the pictures on the camera is another plus that I like (for example, if the red-eye reduction doesn't work, you can manually do it on the camera after the picture has been taken). The big technical difference with this version (vs the A series) is that there are no manual controls for exposure. For us, that was okay. We wouldn't have the first clue how use the manual exposure anyway.
That's all I can think of right now but here's a good website for electronic reviews including the SD1000: http://reviews.cnet.com/Canon_PowerShot_SD1000_silver/450...
