Before I got pregnant with my now 21 month old daughter I was for the most part regular with my periods. I had a healthy pregnancy with no problems. A month after giving birth I did have my period but that was the last one I have had. I have taken NO birth control and breast fed for 12 months. when my daughter was 1 I stopped breast feeding her and we started ttc. I have had NO menstraul cyle return. The first two months I definitely noticed when I was ovulating. But after that is when things got weird. I finally had some testing done and it showed I wasnt ovulating regularly. EVerything else came out fine. All my other levels were normal. But on day 21 my progesterone was very low. 3 months ago I found out I was pregnant but then miscarried a week later. I assume the egg was not fully developed and the lining of my uterus was not thick enough because of having no menstrual cycle. Has anyone experienced this problem of being regular before a period and then having a complete loss of menstrual cycle past breastfeeding? if so do you have any advice?

What can I do next?

Are you too thin? Are you eating enough protein and fresh vegetables?
I'm going to send you the recipe for mother's soup. It's the Chinese cure for all kinds of fertility issues and women's reproductive organ problems.

Seattle has a BIG Chinatown where you can get the ingredients.

I don't have experience w/this problem. I was ovulating, but my eggs weren't good anymore after 2 years of breastfeeding and being 39. It sounds like the type of issue accupuncture could help with. Luteal phase defect? Sounds like you've been to an RE (Reproductive Endocrinologist)? I suggest doing that soone rather than later. I was given incorrect information by my OB/GYN, he didn't know how to interpret my blood tests. My FSH was low but my estrogen was high.

Good Luck!

I didn't have a period for over a year after I stopped birth control. I finally saw a specialist who put me on estrogen and then progresteron pills which "made" me have a period. I went through 2 cycles of those and then she wanted to see if that was enough of a jump start for my body to take over...well 60 days or so later I finally had a period and then another 60 days later we were pregnant. So I would encourage you to talk to a doctor about what you can do. Sometimes our bodies just get out of wack and need a little help remembering what to do. Your body will get back to normal, it just may take a little time.

BTW - The doctor I saw was in Federal Way - if you are anywhere near there and want to know who she was send me a message.

I conceived my second child about 20 months after my first was born. I'm pretty sure that i had an anovulatory cycle at 19 months (aside from the lack of conception that month, i just didn't see my normal ovulatory indicators), and probably a few other months between 12 and 18 months. I did not, however, have any testing done, and i don't know how things would have regulated had i not gotten pregnant when i did.

Since you are ttc, it seems like it is a good idea to discuss with your doctor sooner rather than later.

I did. It only was a problem because I wanted to get pregnant again. Apparently for some women just the tiniest twinge can make their hormones wacky enough to stop ovulation. I breastfed for 8 months and didn't get my period for 2 years.

Two things to try - check with your OB about some synthetic hormone that can jumpstart things if you're trying to get pregnant. I can't remember the name of it, but I only had to take it once or twice and my period started again. Or, and this sounds a little weird, try a chiropractor. I threw out my back something awful a couple years ago, and started seeing a chiropractor for it. Well, of course they say they can fix everything, and my doc was saying stuff about menstrual cycle, etc etc. I pretty much tuned it out. But ever since I started going I have been very regular, and I was never regular at all before that. Can't hurt to try.

Anyway, unless you are TTC, I wouldn't worry about it. As soon as you get that period, you'll wonder why you were missing it : )

When trying to conceive my first after being on the pill for years, my doctor didn't think I was ovulating and he put me on a medication that I took for a week, I think it was called Provera (it is a form of progesterone I believe). The catch is you can't try to get pregnant the month you are taking it. But it jump started ovulation and I conceived the next month. I think it can take up to 3 months to ovulate again after a miscarriage also.
