Oh yeah, don't do it on clean hair...
And wear some junky old clothes that you don't care to ruin.
And pick up anything in the bathroom you don't want ruined either. :)
I gave up the (hair dye) bottle long ago but I was messy when I did it.
Can you tell? Lol. GL!

I wouldn't wash it first.
I think the hair color adheres better if it't dirty.
I can't remember why.
My mom used to dye her own hair & wouldn't wash her hair first.
Same when I used to go to the salon....she preferred unwashed hair.
You wash it right after you dye it anyway to get the color out so it will be
clean then.
Don't forget to put something around your shoulders, do it in the bathroom where you can't ruin carpet, put vaseline around your roots so it won't dye your skin, don't leave in longer than it says, it won't help and you don't need the chemicals in any longer than necessary.
Enjoy your new color!

Yep. Dye it when it's dirty. I did it when it was dry but freshly washed and it didn't "stick" as well.

The color responds better to "dirty" hair based on the oils that are natural to everyone. Do not wash, dry & then color your hair, it's not good for it.

I've been coloring my own hair since high school and that was over 20 years ago. You don't want to do it on clean hair. You want the natural oils on your hair. It will help keep it from drying out. You won't need to cover it also. That is for perms not color. Do brush it out really good before you dye...that will help distribute the natural oils throughout your hair. If you are going dark you may want to put some petrolium jelly on your forehead, back of your neck and ear area to prevent staining. Sally's Beauty Stores also has a wipe that will remove any color on your skin. They are under a $1 each and are very effective. If you have really long hair you may need two boxes of dye. If it is shoulder length and above, one box should do. Hope this helps. Good luck and God Bless.

I always wash mine and dry it/let it dry naturally without any products in it. Then later that day I do the color job. I have never had any problems at all. They all seem to work for me.

I just heard another "why" to this. It doesn't sting your scalp as much if you have some natural oil on your scalp. I've also heard the dye reacts best on your hair when it isn't squeaky clean.
