My 3 yr old son was previously watched at home by his Grandma and is now going to daycare. He has bit children and is showing signs of anger and aggression. He is a sweet boy but this recent anger issue is upsetting and I don't know what to do. We talk about it but he never has an explanation for what he has done. I have tried rewards, punishment, talking, time outs and nothing has helped. He gets upset and says he's sorry but his anger continues. Help!

What can I do next?

My daughter was a biter around that age. How are his verbal skills? He probably bites when he is frustrated and can't find his words. So you should consistently remind him to use his words when he is angry, and that biting is for food only, not friends. There is a Yo Gabba Gabba episode and book about this that may help:

We also got the book "Teeth Are Not for Biting" for our daughter:

Also, what is the day care doing to discipline him? Any response to the biting has to be immediately afterward to be effective, I would think. Your talking with him about it or giving him a time out well after the fact isn't likely to work.

Stay consistent with your punishment. He will get the message. If he truly has anger issues, I would speak to his doctor. Three's are a tough age, if I remember. Good luck.

At 3, the punishment needs to happen when the biting is happening. He cannot connect his punishment at home with his action of 5 hours earlier, he is not old enough. What kind of consequences and behavioral plan have you discussed with his teachers?

Get him checked by his pediatric dentist, he may the startings of a cavity. One of the things that child care classes tells the teachers to try is giving biters chewy food. Things that take loner to chew into small pieces.

Here are some links with suggestions to do for a child that is biting:
