Could my puppy be pregnant? LOL

But seriously, could she?

We got a puppy on December 19th. At that time, she was said to be approximately 6 months old. For anyone who didn't read my previous post about the puppy, we got her from a woman who was fostering her until she could be re-homed. The puppy had belonged to an elderly woman who actually ended up stumbling over her, and breaking her hip. She ended up having to go to a nursing home, and couldn't care for the dog, and opted to get rid of her. Anyhow, when we went to get the dog, the lady who was fostering her said that she thought she might be coming into heat. She has several other dogs, and she said that they had been sniffing around her, and a couple had apparently "tried" to mate with her... she said they weren't successful, but I can't help but wonder... in any case, she didn't seem 'sure' that the puppy was in or was coming into heat, but thought she may be... at least that's what she said.

Well, on that very car ride home, I held the puppy, and ended up with blood spots on my shirt, so YES, she was definitely in heat. And I find it a little odd that this was the very first display of the blood, and think that maybe the lady actually knew she was in heat... but who knows. Anyhow, that was now 18 days ago, and she is STILL bleeding. It's getting lighter, as in, it's only a little spot here or there... but it hasn't stopped yet. First of all, is that normal? To bleed that long? I did some googling of the subject, and I keep reading different things, and can't get a good sense for it... also, and perhaps more importantly, if our puppy was in fact JUST coming into heat when we got her, could the previous attempts by the dogs in the foster mom's house have impregnated her? Or would it likely have been too early in her cycle?

I know dog's cycles don't mimic humans. In humans, if you are bleeding, then in most cases, you are not pregnant. A period is the expulsion of the uterine lining that was there to prepare for a fertilized egg. In dogs, they bleed during the time they can be impregnated. So the fact that she has been bleeding does not indicate that she is not pregnant.

SO, long story short, do you think my puppy might be pregnant? I swear to goodness, if she's pregnant, someone's head is gonna roll. LOL

We have not taken her to the vet yet, but YES, we are, probably tomorrow. And YES, we absolutely DO plan to have her spayed right away. We DO NOT want puppies. Nor do we want to put her through that.

I am really asking this to DVMMOM... hope you're reading this!!!

Thank you for reading my "Could my dog be pregnant" question! LOL

So What Happened?

Thank you, ladies... you basically confirmed what I was thinking, that it is not likely that she is pregnant because she was with us during the 2nd phase of heat, when she would have ovulated... but we will take her to the vet, just to be sure... and just to be checked, for that matter...

LMAO, Denise!!

From what I remember from my mom's dogs ( she used to breed Shelties) they are in heat for about 21 days.

In a dog they are usually in heat 3 weeks. The only time they can get pregnant is the second week, at least by my experience. We bread our dog in July her second week then at the end of August we had 2 puppies. While it seems long it does last 3 weeks. One going into heat, light blood, one in heat, heavier blood, the last going out lighter to spotting. I can hardly tell when Lady is going into heat exec pt for her constant cleaning of herself. If I were to "guess" I would say no but do take her to a vet to make sure.

A dog can go into heat 1st time anywhere from 6 months to 18 months old, and if a male got to her, she could be pregnant, but she might not be.
The vet will tell you.
No responsible breeder would breed a dog that young - there's too much possibility of death of both the mother and the litter.
Having her spayed right away should not be a problem.

I'm not a vet and I "know" great danes, so I'mnot sure if it's the same across all breeds. The bleeding for 18 days thing is normal. Most likely, the pup would not be pregnant. They tend to ovulate and be fertile around days 10-14 after they start bleeding.

Of course, there is still a chance if she was bleeding already at the foster's house and either the woman didn't know or she's omitting information. In which case, a tie could have occurred.
