An Exiting IUC (Mirena)

I had the IUC Mirena put in on Monday 5/19 and on Thursday 5/22, IT HAS WORKED IT'S WAY OUT. IT IS NO LONGER IN ME! I spoke with my Dr.'s PA, she's the one who put it in, and she told me that it was in the uterus. Other people that I have spoke with who have been through this process told me that they had cramping and felt pressure while it was being incerted. I felt none of this at the time. They also spoke about at the time about a sound they were listening for and never heard. My friends' confirmed that there was a "click" sound that they heard. I don't believe that my PA put the IUC in correctly. Has anyone else had an IUD/C come out?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who replyed! Your advice really helped. I went to the dr. today to have the Mirena replaced and it felt a lot differently then the last time. This time there was pressure and instant cramping. They also took an x-ray and it is in there, thank goodness! I'm hoping this will be it and I'll get to keep this one in longer then 2 days!! Thanks again!

I have the Mirena as well. I did not hear a click noise during insertion, but I did feel the overwhelming pressure and cramping during the procedure, but I had mine done 7 weeks after having my son. If you had the procedure done during or just after a menstrual cycle, then you may not have felt the pressure and pain. My doctor told me that I was going to feel the pain and pressure for 2 reasons: 1) I had just given birth and my insides were still tender and swollen and 2) The pressure was him having to go in and physically open my uterus up to insert the IUC, where as a woman on her cycle would already have the uterus at least slightly open. My doctor also told me that the best way to check for proper insertion is to feel for the strings, they are unmistakable, you will definitley know them when you feel them. Find the strings and follow them up the cavity and make sure that you do not feel the other end but rather the opening to your uterus, and also give a very gentle tug on the strings. If the IUC is in place then when you do the gentle tug it will give a little, but then go right back to where the strings were. Hopefully this helps and I hope that it was inserted correctly and you were just lucky enough to not feel the pain. As I said before, I had given birth 7 weeks prior and when the IUC was inserted, I broke out in a cold sweat and almost starting crying because of the pressure, it wasn't a pleasant feeling.

I had the procedure done a year and a half ago now... but I remember the experience like it was yesterday! The insertion was VERY unpleasant and I cramped horribly (which was new to me since I never really had unpleasant menstrual cramping) but like the others... I do not remember hearing a clicking sound.

One thing that I've realized... sometimes now when I have cramps, they go down into my thigh which is very uncomfortable (a co-worker of mine said she experienced the same thing when she had hers in years ago). I honestly have considered switching to a different BC method, but I need to discuss it with my Dr. first. I have also heard from some that taking it out is not pleasant either.

Good luck!

well, i had a copper IUD for a long time, and i never heard a click when it was inserted; i'm not sure how i would have, i guess. i did feel some pressure but since it's inserted while you're on your period that's par for the course i guess. if you are so concerned ask for a vaginal ultrasound to check the placement.

Hi J., I do have an IUD, it was put in little over two years ago, it was done on my six week check up after I had my son. I remember very clearly hearing a little click only b/c my doc and I was joking about it she said you will hear it like its in the back of your head, and ya thats how it was kinda like it was in my ear weird I know, I had a lot of pressure in my lower back while she inserted it, and very little cramping after, spotted for maybe an hour. And she strictly said to check for the string after every monthly cycle, if you dont feel it I was to take other precaution and get ahold of her.
She also said if it is not going to stay it will fall out within the first six wks I had to make apt to go back in for her to check to insure it was still in proper.
I would demand for a new doctor, or demand to speak with your doctor and not the PA, explain your problem, let them check and go from there.
I have recently lost all respect for PA's and NP's, I just ask to speak with our doctor and him only.. Good luck

J. - I do not remember hearing a click. But the insertion process was very unpleasant for me so I may not have been focusing on that at the time. I had the Mirena put in this past February. My Dr. told me that it would be a 10 minute procedure and assured me that I could go back to work right after the appointment. Well, none of that turned out to be true in my case. The insertion lasted 20 minutes and the cramping was completely unbearable immediately afterwards. I was not able to go back to work after the appointment and instead had to pull my car off to the side of the road until the cramping subsided on my way home. I cramped terribly for three days after the insertion. Two weeks after the insertion, I went back for a follow up appointment. I asked the Dr. if she could "trim the threads" as they were quite long and uncomfortable when I walked. She said, no problem. She trimmed the first thread just fine but with the second thread, she "applied too much tension" and pulled the mirena out. I was so angry b/c of all the pain and trouble I went through getting it in and getting used to it. She was completely apologetic but that did nothing for me then. I ended up walking out of there with another Depo Shot which is why I wanted to go on Mirena in the first place. I've gained 34 lbs after two years of being on the Depo Shot. But, I chose not to have another Mirena placed in me b/c of the tense insertion process and the horrible cramping for 72 hours afterwards. Whew...didn't mean to make this so long. I do not think mine was inserted properly. But to answer your questions, no, I did not hear a click during insertion but I did have a ton of cramping (the cramping that makes you double over in pain).

xx Good Luck xx

I didn't hear anything, and getting mine inserted felt no different than that few seconds of a pap exam. I can very easily feel my strings, but I know it's in there because I saw it on an xray for something unrelated. I have had mine for almost 3 years, and couldn't be happier with it. My period disappeared completely after 6 months.

I have had 2 IUDs put in and I did hear a click or have any cramping. When I got the first one taken out I cramped more than having it put it. I wouldn't worry about it, but if you are call the dr and have them check it.

You should go talk w/your doctor. There should have been a "clicking" sound, and mine did involve some pressure. i didn't feel the cramping until later in the day, but i DID feel it. I would advise seeing your doctor right away.

J.--

This exact same thing happened to me. I had one put in about 9 months ago, 3 months after I had my daughter (whose 1st birthday is today!). I expected to feel cramping and pressure when it was inserted, but didn't. A few days later, I felt a lot cramping though, and my strings were very, very low; almost hanging out. I called and told them that I thought it was falling out, and they kind of brushed me off, saying that I just wasn't used to it yet. I insisted that I needed to come in, and they made my appointment for two days later. Lo and behold, they discovered it had worked itself about halfway out. I still wanted to give it a try, so I asked them to take it all the way out and put another one in. I felt more cramping during and immediately after the procedure, much like I had anticipated the first time. It hurt, but thank goodness not nearly as bad as a lot of the stories of some of the other posters! I would liken it to bad menstrual cramps. I called in sick to work, mostly so I could stay home with my daughter again. :)

I never heard a click either time, but wasn't listening for it. This is actually the first I've heard of it being mentioned.

I lightly spotted every single day for the next three months, which was a pain, but now I love it!

My advice: go see your doctor. If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't! You know your body better than they do.

Good luck!

I too thought the inserting process was not very pleasant, but did not last long. I felt a little woozy at first, but by the time I got to my car, I was fine. I have only had it in for a month and had my check up last week and it was fine and still in. I did not hear a clicking either, but again was not listening for one. I am one of the lucky ones with no cramping. My dr. told me if I did not cramp much during my periods, I probably wouln't with this either. I had been on depot for years prior to this and my periods stop and she said I would most likely have the same experience with this.
If you feel that it is not in correctly, you might want to have it rechecked.

I have a Mirena too. I have had it since Oct 06 and have not had a period since. I love it! I did hear a clicking sound when mine was placed in but it was a soft noise. I had very little cramping but I did bleed for a month afterwards. If you don't think your doctor put it in right you might want to find another doctor. You should always have confidence in your doctor. Good luck.

I've never had an IUC, but if it were me, I'd call the doctor (not the PA) right away. You may not be a candidate for the IUC, and you want to make sure that everything else "down there" is okay. Your doctor is ultimately responsible for the procedure being done correctly. PA's and nurse practioners are great, but I generally want to speak to/see the one who went to med school for 8+ years. God bless you!

Did they do an ultrasound as they were inserting it? They should have done one so they could see exactly where it was being placed.

If you are unsure that the PA did it right, and your concerns were dismissed, perhaps its best to speak directly to your doctor, or get a 2nd opinion. Better for the PA to be offended that you didnt trust her word than to end up with another child you're not wanting at this time.

J. i got the IUD inserted about 1-1/2 years ago and it works like a charm, now they said there was going to be cramping and or pressure but I never felt it and the click I heard it but its a very soft noise so I wouldn't worry, the only thing I could tell you is if you can feel the string you are ok, just have your husband check or you can check yourself either way if you can feel it you should have no problem. Just a reminder if you get a period you must check for it because sometimes they can shift.
