American Kennel Club Registration?

For those of you have purchased a puppy with AKC paperwork, have you registered the dog once you received him/her from the breeder? I'm trying to figure out the benefits (if any) of registering? Seems like just more money to spend, but maybe i'm missing something...

We have NO plans to breed the dog. Just loving and enjoying him =)

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I did register my rott but there really was no benefit because I didn't breed him. I think it's only beneficial if you want to breed them.

There are only two reasons why you would register a dog: you are wanting to breed the dog or you are planning on competing (show, agility, obedience....)

So if the dog is simply your family pet... spend the money on some new dog toys.
Good luck.

If you have no plans to breed or show the dog, it really doesn't matter if he's AKC registered or not.

I did with my husbands beagle (a gift from me to him) only b/c I wanted to be respectful of the family line and family tree, so there weren't any gaps in his lineage on paper...more so for the breeder than for us.

He was just a family pet and the expensive little brat dashed past me when I was bringing in grocieries and got himself ran over right in front of me, right after he turned 2. Broke my husband's heart!

~I'm with the others...its only necessary if you are gonna breed or show him.

It is up to you. My dog is registered with CKC and it was about $15 to register her. She has already been spayed so we will not be breeding and at the moment we have no plans of making her a show dog.

I registered her in case I need to find another home for her (if my daughter was allergic or if something comes up). This way there is no argument.

Yes, mine are registered, but I like to show my dogs (obedience, agility and conformation). Otherwise, I wouldn't bother.

3girls, so sorry about your dog. :-(

We have (had, our oldest passed unexpectedly Sunday) two purebred dogs. We registered one and not the 2nd. No difference, no benefit if you are not planning to breed. Enjoy your new puppy! They bring so much joy, laughter and fun to a family!

The papers are for breeding and showing. You can do neither without them. It is interesting to me that your breeder gave you full papers knowing you were buying a pet. They usually don't because people that buy pets tend to breed stupidly and then their kennel is linked to an inferior dog.

You may want to check to see if you have full papers because if you don't there is no reason to register beyond bragging rights.

We did because we have an American Bulldog and we wanted definitive proof of her breed for insurance purposes. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it unless you want to show him/her. Just make sure you put the papers somewhere safe.

We have a boxer who is eligible for AKC registration, but we never registered her. She's a pet. We'll never show her or breed her. She's 9 years old now, and she's been a wonderful dog for our family. As far as I know, the only reason to register would have been for our own egos. We just didn't find it necessary.

I am pretty sure it only matters if you want to breed them or train them for competition. we had a dog we could have registered but we didn't because he would not be doing either. I did think it had to be done prior to birth or placement though. I could be wrong.

I honestly can't remember. I might have. Actually, yes... I think I did. But there aren't any "benefits" that I am aware of.... maybe something to do with pet insurance or something like that.. :/ ?

It wasn't very expensive (or I wouldn't have done it), though I suppose the costs could have changes since then (8 years or so ago).
