Almost 6 Months Old and Does Not Roll Over

My son is almost 6 months old and doesn't roll over on a consistent basis. We see him roll over every once in a while. When he is on his tummy he pushes up for a while and then will suck his thumb and just rest. The first time he rolled over was 12/30/08 (we even have it on film). Is there anything I can do to help promote rolling over on a more frequent basis? Should I be concerned?

What can I do next?

My daughter was a late roller too. She hated being on her stomach and when she realized she could roll over to keep from being on her stomach then she was all for it. Hang in there, I'm learning that babies do things at their own speed.

Hi Wendy~
I agree with the other responses... I don't think there's anything to worry about . I would like to add, though, that floor time should be tummy time. That will encourage him to roll over more.
Take care.

I wouldn't worry about it. You said he has rolled over before. Babies develop on their own schedules. There is no set date that they all do things by. My 2 girls did things at different times. You can encourage him with lots of tummy time and place toys next to him to see if he can "grab" or go for them. If you are really worried, or he seems to be behind in other areas, mention it to your doctor next appt.

Good luck!!

Hi Wendy-I really wouldn't worry about it. My son hardly ever rolled over and did a lot of other things first, like sitting up. He is now 18 months old and very active and physically coordinated. I think they all have their own timeline for doing things and their own order of things. My pediatrician looked for other markers to look at his development like other movements and muscular strength. I would not be concerned at all at this point.

Milestones say they should be rolling at 6 months- but babies don't roll as early now because they don't sleep on their stomachs like they did 25 years ago. He'll roll consistently when he's ready. You may be able to encourage him by putting toys just out of his reach so he has to roll to get to them. He should have tummy time at least 10 minutes, 3 times a day. I'm in contact with a lot of infants and believe me he's not unusual. He'll "get it" soon and then watch out!

My nephew just recently started rolling over semi-consistently, and he's about 11mo. I think the first time he did it was about 9mo, a month after (in age) my daughter (5 weeks older than him) started walking. He still hasn't even tried crawling. He's perfectly healthy, a little bigger than some kids, but there's nothing wrong with him at all. He just doesn't want to do it. Watching him, he's just too laid back to care! (And it's so adorable!) If you're concerned, mention it to your pediatrician, but definately know that your son is not alone, and it doesn't make him unhealthy.

Welcome to motherhood! Its the most important job you could have.

I don't think you should worry. You've seen him do it, so he can, he just isnt. Try to increase his tummy play time. This will help build his arm muscles, which will help him learn to roll from tummy to back more often.

Don't be concerned.
My 6 month old twins don't roll over either.
It's just a guideline. Some other kid will not say a peep until they are 18 months and yours will probably be talking at 8 months. Some babies just are ahead on some things.

My baby is just shy of 6 mo. and only rolls back to front. She'll push up for a bit and then either lay down or fuss to be rolled over...then she'll roll back over again!

I wouldn't worry. He's at least rolling one way and one book I read said that if they're not doing it by 7 months, then you worry.

What we do is give her floor time and lots of space to roll and try to show her how to tuck in her arm and roll that direction. You can also put something interesting off to the side so he has to roll to get there.

I don't think it's anything to worry about, since you know he is capable of doing it. He probably just doesn't want to. I remember with my firstborn, I watched him intently for when he would roll over and it seemed like he never would. He seemed to skip that altogether and go straight to pulling up and crawling.

I say if he is 5 or 6 years old and still can't roll over, then there may be a problem.

I agree with all the mommies out there. Don't worry. My son, now 6, didn't do much of anything (with two older sisters to carry him around, why bother :o). around 10 months he started to crawl and at 11 months was walking and at a year was running. so my fat, lazy happy baby then became a whirlwind of activity. Your son will learn and you will then yearn for the "easy" days. So don't worry, enjoy!!

I agree, I would not worry. Neither of mine rolled until 8 months! My first rolled the same week she crawled. Just give him lots of opportunity for floor time (they say 5 for 5 - five minutes a day - 5 times a day as the rule).
And....enjoy it now, once he does start rolling and crawling, it is a whole different ball game :)

Nope some kids like to roll over and some don't. All that matters is that he can. It's just his pref. one thing is you might be going over and doing things for him so he sees no point in rolling over himself. If you stop moving him and adjusting things he might do it more.

Hi Wendy,
My daughter wasn't really into rolling over much either. She did it a few times and then lost interest. I asked our pediatrician who said some kids roll over once and then move onto other things, other kids roll over a lot. But, if you are concerned, you should ask your pediatrician just to make sure all is ok.

When in doubt ask your doctor. Most insurance companies along with State programs will give your child free sessions of OT and PT so if there is a delay you can work on it ASAP. He is most likely fine, but I would look into it, if anything he'll bet some free one-one play time with an experienced therapist.
GOOD LUCK:)
