Rolling over Help!

My 7month old son can't seem to roll over from stomach to back. And as from back to stomach, he just rolls to the side, but doesn't complete the roll. I get a little worried b/c other babies that are younger then him are already rolling over. Is there anyone out there that has experienced this or can give me some advise?

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

To encourage him to turn over onto his stomach put him on the floor on his back. You sit "above" his head. Get his attention in this position. In my experience, babies more contort their bodies from the head down to turn over. Getting onto his side is good but, his initial rolls from back to stomach will probably not come from this position. Hope this helps.

Don't fret! All children roll over at different times--and some don't ever really get there. My son, now 13 and a very capable roller-overer, didn't roll over until 10 months. And then he started walking at 10 1/2 months. I worried too, all the other kids were doing it, but my pediatrician assured me that the range of "normal" is quite large.

Hi S.,
I had to chuckle when I read your post. My son will be 10 months on the 5th, he is 25lbs, and barely rolls over on his own. He is does sit up on his own pretty well but still falls over and gets mad if he rolls over and his one arm gets stuck. He is just solid like a tree trunk.

Bottom line is that I wouldn't worry at all! The doctor assured me not to worry about my son and he is obviously way behind yours!

Enjoy him and take care.

My 6 month old son just had a well baby vist the other day. While he can roll from back to belly and belly to back he does this extremely infrequently. I spoke with the doctor and she didn't seem very concerned. Because children have less and less belly time, this skill seems to be disappearing in a sense. She said that more and more this skill really doesn't exist and kids move right on to sitting. She wasn't very worried at all when she saw that my son is independently sitting. Despite this I still am trying to work with him on this skill. I lay him in bed on his back and gently/playfully roll him to his side and let him then roll the rest of the way. He thinks it is a game and laughs. I also lay with him on the floor and put toys slightly out of his reach try to entice him to reach for them. As for rolling from belly to back, while in bed I prop him steeply on a pillow and let gravity takes its place. Once again, he thinks it is a game and laughs. See what happens. If sitting becomes delayed, then around 9 months you may want to speak with the pediatrician and see if a physical therapy evaluation through early intervention is warranted. Good luck!

I wouldn't worry yourself. my daughter was 27 pounds at 10 months and 35 at 1 yr. she rolled maybe 4-5 times tops she always army crawled. I always worried about her weight as i have a 2 yr old nephew that is 24 pounds an a girlfriend who has a 10 month old who we are with daily and her son flew past my daughter in everything he is walking all over and has been for sometime.I have 4 kids and they all moved at their own pace. i am sure he will catch on and be rolling all over or he might skip it and just go straight to walking.

I don't think you have anything to worry about at this point. Be sure to put him on his tummy to play so he can develop his strength. Practice rolling over with him. Mention it to his pediatrician at his next appt so she is aware of your concerns.

No worries. My son was crawling before he finally figured out the whole rolling over thing - probably around 10 months! Some kids just seem to take their time. He is now 14 months and not yet walking. We know plenty of kids his age who have been walking for months and others who are at the same place as him. Hard not to worry but I think we need to remember that everything will come when they are ready!
