Dear Mommas,
My son started pre school this week. Twice in the last 3 days he has gone to sleep at 330 pm in the aft until 6 am....Is this normal? Have your children gone through changes that induced them to sleep so much???? I guess starting a new phase of life is like "labor" :)

Thanks, Jilly

My kids are homeschooled, and it's still not completely unusual for my 4yo to fall asleep at 4-ish and sleep through the night. Being a kid is hard work! :)

My kids still took a nap almost every day at 3 years old....... So if he is missing out on nap time, I wouldn't be worried at all.

My son does that too even now at 5 when we add to his routine. I was foolish enough to overlap gymnastics and swimming classes recently and he was asleep on the way home almost every night and still clearly wasn't getting enough sleep by his level of crankiness..

Think of all the new stuff your son is deluged with - new rules and new authority figures, no mom or dad around to check in for assurances, all the new things he is learning, all the personality dynamics of the other children. Considering all that you'll be amazed at how quickly he adjusts. For my son it will usually take a week or two before he gets back to a more normal schedule.

School can really tire them out. As long as he seems healthy and happy I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just make sure he eats and drinks something before he goes to sleep.

Wow, that is 15 hours.. Does he get a nap at day care? I would ask the pedi about it.. Seems like it could be a growing spurt, but I would want to verify with the Doctor.

I would think he would nap at day care from 11:30 to 1 or 1:30. Then when he gets home have a quiet time, then some outside playtime, dinner and good quiet bath and then bet by 7:00 or 7:30..

Of course. He's still only 3 and needs naps. The new schedule is probably tiring him and he may need more sleep to make up for it.

Oh my! So surprised to see that there are so many others that have had the same thing happen. Never happened with my four kids. I'd be scared. That's a long time to be asleep at once! I'd miss my child, too- that means you'd never see them!

...but I assume it is alright since this happens to many...

My son has done that... ESPECIALLY when going through growth spurts.

Yes, going to school for a child, is like 'working' ALL day. It is a long day for them.
They get, totally exhausted.

Let him sleep.
I don't even wake my son for anything/dinner, when he is sleeping like that.
He will stir, but not wake up. I check on him as usual.

Both of my children when they were little fell asleep early during the school year. Since your son has just started preschool; he may be focusing alot and playing and learning more than before and that is taking more energy from him. If he sleeps well at night then I suggest that he is getting enough protein in his diet to fuel energy for his body. If he is restless at night time he may be missing something from a nutrition standpoint and i would put him on incredivites for children. They are the best natural vitamin/mineral for children on the market. You can get them at the website below. I would also suggest watching him for a week or so to see if the going to sleep at 3:30 stops. I had put my children on the supplement when they were young so I would know that they were getting plenty of nutrition along with the diet; they are both very healthy in their teen years.

Wow, that is a long time to sleep! I don't know, I guess if he doesn't seem to be coming down with something then it should be fine. He should probably start to adjust to his new schedule soon. Good luck!
