I need help. My daughter is almost 2 and she had lose poopies for about a day and a half, she still have lose poopie but the worst diaper rash I have ever seen. I change her all the time. She has never even had a rash when she's been sick or as a infant. This is as red as red gets. She won't even sit or let you go near her to wipe or for cream. I feel like the cream is just making it more moist and not helping. I have tried the old fashion ways and still no help. Is there medication or something a doctor can get to help, or is someone out there that has a great new home rem I have not tried yet! Thanks moms!
I have 2 boys and the thing that worked the absolute best and fastest was a tube of straight zinc oxide (Walgreen's brand). All diaper rash ointments have a small amount of this in them but the straight stuff is magic. Clears any redness up within a day or two.

Generic liquid antacid. Cotton balls and warm soapy water followed by warm clear water then air dry and apply (by dabbing gently) liquid antacid. It drys up the rash almost immediately and provides instant relief. My dr. recommended this and I thought he was nuts but it soooo works, got my cousin to use it on her little girl too and she swears by it!

have you tried just pure white yogurt. cool soothing doesn't burn and replaces possible yeast with good bacteria. my daughter had loose stools one time that caused a bad diaper rash er dr prescribed an ointment said he could have prescribed the stuff in a cream but the one is thicker. hurts to slather. anyway the yogurt will probably feel good and it won't hurt her. also instead of wipes just use a rag with plain old water on it the chemicals in the wipes can irritate the burns. what the really bad ones resemble. also depending on whats causing the loose stools you can generally start feeding her foods to firm them up. blueberries and one good thing my dad used to give them to my kids,

try calling your pediatrician, they may even prescribe without you coming in. Nystatin is the most common, we also had a doc who prescribed Silvadene, which is typically used for burns. His theory was that diaper rash a type of acid burn. The combination definitely worked.

If you take her to her pediatrician they will most likely give you Nystatin; works pretty good and quickly. You can also try putting neosporin on her rash and I've found that simply using Aquaphor works great also. My daughter has very sensitive skin, has ezcema and all, and if she doesn't get changed right away after having a bowel movement she'll break out. The aquaphor is a great barrier against her skin getting irritated and clears her up when she does. I put it on her at every diaper change and it's very rare that I see any problems anymore. Hope you find a solution as I know how hard it is to see your little one in such discomfort.

My son had really bad diaper rash and the diaper creams made it worse. I put "Bag Balm" on his bottom, and it took a while to heal it up but it did, and then I put it on as a preventative until he was older and not peeing all the time in his diaper. You can find "Bag Balm" at Wal-mart or Walgreens, it comes in a green can and I use it for many other things as well. I hope this helps.

usually if a rash doesn't go away with regular zinc oxide cream, it's a yeasty rash. A dr. can prescribe Nystatin cream or something similar. Since I hate to pay $50 for a copay and prescription myself, I usually put regular Monistat yeast infection cream on my daughter (the 7 day stuff, not the really concentrated stuff). Either way, antifungals need to be used for at least a week or the rash will come back. Good luck!

Triple Paste by far!! Every other paste i used did not work, no matter what! His was bad, so red and sore, andwould cry just to wipe it. I finally read many reviews and spoke with doctor and said that triple paste had zinc oxide PLUS powder to dry it out. The MAIN problem is that ppl put xream on before bottom is COMPLETELY dry and it is a neverending process....as I experienced. I make sure it is dry, put triple paste cream on, then some baby powder with CORNSTARCH only. The cornstarch is more gentle for sensitive bottoms. I went through many many many trial and errors, and this is the ONLY thing that works full proof for me. Remember: must keep dry...that is key!! This paste is the only creme with powder in it, plus zinc oxide that makes it effective. If the diaper rash isn't real bad, those other creams might work, but in my case none of them did.

This happened to us when my daughter switched from nursing to drinking milk from a sippy cup. She had big cracks and her skin was bleeding, and it was almost instantaneous, loose poopie, bad rash that just got worse. The Dr. recommended Aveeno rash ointment and that didn't touch it. I was so nervous because we were getting ready to leave on a road trip and I felt horrible that she would have to be in the car seat for so long. The Dr. finally fit us in and saw it for himself, and then prescribed "Elidel". AMAZING! A tiny little bit the size of a pea and she started healing immediately. The 2nd thing - we switched her to lactaid because my husband is lactose intolerant - and bingo! No more loose poopie, no more rash! Now she just takes a chewable tablet in the morning "Digestive Advantage for lactose intolerance - children's formula" and she is good to go for 24 hours.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

You want the amber colored ointment not the cream. I would definitely get her to the pediatrician too just in case she has an internal yeast infection or something else going on with the loose bowel movements.

This will totally cure the diaper rash in less than two days!!! We had to take our son to the doctor for a diaper rash like this years ago and the nurse told us to try mylanta and corn starch and it was AMAZING! You pour the mylanta on their bottom and let the extra stay in the diaper and then dump on the corn starch. It helps to soothe the skin and keep it dry. My kids have always had relief immediately. Don't use wipes or cream - we used wash clothes and gave quick baths to keep the area very clean. Good luck!

She's having loose poopies because of her diet? That's the logical approach. Ask your pediatrician.
Zinc ointment (it's over the counter) or corn starch (rather than baby powder, which can be an allergen) may alleviate the rash.
Also, let her walk outdoors (in your backyard where it's safe and secluded) without the diaper to air dry. This may not be an option, so let her walk without the diaper in your house. But get back to the diet...that may be the root cause.

If it is a yeast infection, applying cornstarch to it will make it worse. The corn starch is a great food for the yeast, and their population will explode if given that food.
Doctors can help a bad diaper rash, and will be able to tell if it is irritated skin or a yeast infection.
We have had diaper rash issues and both letting my son run around without pants on in the backyard and/or soaking in the tub have both helped the skin healing process.

It seemed to keep coming back and we tried everything, we needed something strong. We started using Tiger balm with Maylox or putting Maylox on her first letting it dry then adding the Tiger Balm. We had a problem with her screaming & trying to climb on top of me everytime we put diaper creme on her. Now my daughter has Toddler's diarrhea with no diaper rash. You mix it up in a tubberware bowl and use it every time you change your daughter. In the meantime I would try the same concoction without the prescription. That's my plan for his next bad one to see if it'll go away with over the counter stuff alone. She says the Maalox helps with the burning sensation they are getting with it. Hope this helps!

Good luck, I've been there before. You may also want to use the A&D ointment. Works wonders! Oh and don't use wipes, no matter how "sensitive" they may be. Hi! Have you tried Desitin Original? It is the best way to go...I am a pediatric RN and I swear by this stuff. Your little one will probably not want you near her, however you just have to go for it and somehow get it on her. The Desitin original goes on thick and will seem like it doesnt wipe off all the way in-between diaper changes. This is a good thing though. It is protecting her poor red (and super painful) bum from the pee & poo which is irritating it more. If you haven't tried that, I highly recommend trying it. My little guy was the same way....no rashes at all and then sometime before he was 2, he got a horrendous red, painful bum. We just had to tag team him for changes and slather the desitin on him. It worked within a day. :) Good luck! Bri

I didn't read through all of the responses, so I apologize if any of this is a repeat. My 12 month old son recently went through a bout of loose stools & ended up with the worst diaper rash he had ever had (worse than any my older child had ever had). I felt like the traditional creams & wipes were just making it worse, & diaper changes were becoming so painful for my poor son. I ended up looking up some natural remedies online, and I kind of picked & chose from different things I read online. I don't remember the exact sites I went to, & I think different things work for different children. But here is what worked for us:
1. As annoying as it was, we stopped using wipes until his stools were back to normal (we always used sensitive/unscented wipes, but these still seemed to irritate the rash). We rinsed his tush in the sink each time either w/plain water or a very mild baby soap.
2. We let his tush air dry for as long as was possible with a baby boy ;-) before we rediapered him.
3. A couple of times a day we would use a cotton ball & lightly dab a baking soda/water mixture on the rash (also letting dry throughly before rediapering). I was skeptical of this at first, but I really think this is one of the things that helped the most. (I found this remedy in a section on treating a yeasty diaper rash, but I am not sure if my son's was yeast related or not)
4. Once the rash got a little better, we started using a traditional diaper cream w/ zinc oxide again, but we covered the diaper cream with a good layer of Vaseline to create an extra barrier (one site I was on talked about making your own zinc oxide/petroleum jelly cream).
5. A couple of times, we also let him sit in a baking soda/water bath (other sites also recommended epsom salt baths)
Anyways, that is what worked for us. I hope some of it is helpful for you. All the best!!!

Hi C.,
It sounds like it might be a yeast infection. Definitely see your pediatrician about a prescription to treat it with. I found that when my kids were nearing "potty training age", they experienced pretty nasty bouts of diaper rash, too. It almost seems like nature's way of encouraging toddlers to use a toilet instead of a diaper. In the meantime, I found that using A&D ointment (not the zinc oxide kind...The one with the brown and yellow label) really helped with my daughter's rash until we got a prescription for her. Even then, we used the prescription and the A&D together and that really helped keep the rash in check. Good luck! You're in the home stretch! You'll be diaper free before you know it!

Air her out as much as possible. Maybe in the process she'll potty train. either way, you need to let the booty breathe. Give her probiotics (plain yogurt) and decrease sugars in her diet in case there is a yeast componenet to the rash. If you have an aloe plant, you could sneak some fresh aloe gel on her rash when she is napping.

I used to work in a hospital and cared for adults, some with very bad skin breakdown as well as ADULT diaper rash and the very best thing going out there is plain old A & D ointment. It is very greasy and a little gross looking (not white like Desitin and others) but it WORKS miracles on a very bad, very sore rash. I guarantee if you put it on (don't be afraid to smear on a lot of it) it will look better in just half a day and it will protect her skin so it does not hurt if she pees or poops again. It also wipes off easier than Desitin so you are not further causing pain to wipe off the old stuff. Be sure to watch her and change her as soon as she is dirty or wet, as that will help as well. Poor Baby.

Hi, C.!
It looks like you've gotten some great ideas, some of which I will try if I have next round! But here's what I've done in the past.
The first thing I always tackle is diet--I add the BRAT diet to their food--bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. They love all those, so it's usually not hard! I avoid citrus or anything greasy, minimize dairy except for yogurt.
I've tried most of the creams out there; right now I mostly use Boudreau's Butt Paste--BUT NOT ON BROKEN SKIN! If the skin's broken, I use Lansinoh--the stuff you use when you're breastfeeding. It doesn't work great, but it's safe in open wounds and I figure it creates a little barrier between the skin and the irritation.
Check your wipes--use the mildest kind possible. I even go to those make up-removing cloths with nothing on them, and just dip them in water if it's really bad.
I also do oatmeal baths. If you have whole oats around, you can tie up a handful in a sock and put the whole thing in th water, or you can buy the Aveeno oatmeal bath in the kids' aisle at the store. Usually my son won't sit in the bath because he thinks it will hurt, but if I pour the oatmeal water over his butt while he's standing, he will eventually relax and sit. I will let him take a good soak in that, no soap.
Mostly, you just have to hang on until it heals. Good luck!

My daughter has chronic diarrhea and I battle diaper rash on a regular basis. If it is not at the point of bleeding yet, then you are okay, but you DO need to get cream on her. A friend with similar problems turned me on to Wedela Calendula Diaper Cream. It is the only thing I have found that works for my daughter. Some Publixes carry it, Whole Foods carries it, but the cheapest is online at http://www.luckyvitamin.com (and no I have no personal or financial interest in you shopping at any one of these places!).
My daughter's rash would get so bad we had to take her to a dermatologist to get help healing it. She was in so much pain, could not sleep, sit, or do much of anything but cry. Once we finally got things under control, I started using this cream whenever she even shows hints of redness. She has not had to go back to the doctor since.
Good luck and give a big hug to your daughter...I can only imagine what kind of pain she is experiencing!

Pure corn starch! It drys out the area and soothes, and leave her diaper off as long as possible after you put it on and it will get better very quickly! don't use cream! It just keeps it wet. you want it to dry out. Especially if the skin is broken!
I have put on the corn starch and let them sleep at night with no diaper and put under them a large disposable pad, like the puppy training pads or the ones they use at the hospital and then just change it in the night if they pee, which was usually one time in the night and then reapply the corn starch. By morning it was clearing up and the broken places were scabbed up.

Dear Cory,
This might sound silly, but as a Mom and now Grandmom, I have faced this a few times. First, if you don't have it, I suggest Pedialyte (sic) and flavor doesn't matter, keep her diet light too until the diarrhea leaves, she must not get dehydrated. Next, put her in the bathtub with about an inch or 2 of warm water, a little corn starch doesn't hurt. Let her play for a little bit with her bath toys, when you dry her off, I have had great success with Balmex and also Gold Bond cream for babies...both are excellent. If she is still in a crib, let her take her nap without a diaper...think air to her bottom, (yes, put a wet pad under her to sleep) If the diarrhea is not better by now, get her to her Pediatrician! Hope this works...and good luck!

Hi C.~
I'm sorry you're having this problem. My daughter is in her 40's, but when she had diaper rash I used a hint from Heloise, and you won't believe this one. Spray starch! I would use the pure kind that you mix, then put it in a spray bottle. Don't use the kind with chemicals in it.
In the fall, diapers will be available that are biodegradeable, super-absorbent, and have reverse ion technology that will combat this situation. Right now, this reverse ion technology is only available on sanitary napkins, but you can take the strip off to use or just put the napkin on top of the diaper. If you want to see how effective the reverse ion technology is, here is a short video: (you'll have to cut and paste)
As far as I know, I am the only representative in the area who carries this item.

Two different pediatricians have explained diaper rashes to me. That there are two different causes: yeast (sounds like the rash you're describing, caused by the poop)and ammonia burn (caused by pee, usually only if using cloth diapers) Going without a diaper as much as possible will help (sunshine helps too) And acidopholus yogurt will also help. You can apply yogurt directly to her skin to soothe, instead of your diaper cream (most creams work as a moisture barrier to prevent the ammonia burn type of rash.)And yes, it's runny and a little yucky but will probably soothe her skin almost right away. You can also include the yogurt in her diet to keep it from happening again. The acidopholus maintains a healthy balance of good bacterias in our stomachs and helps with digestion. Lots of sugar in our diets causes an unhealthy balance which would lead to the overgrowth of yeast. The doctor can also prescribe a cream (that's similar to yeast infection creams for vaginal yeast infections in women)I hope this is helpful.

It's called Calendula lotion or gel. I use the gel when the rash is really bad and the lotion to keep things good. You can also do oatmeal baths until things clear up. You can get the lotion/gel at most health stores which is probably what you will have to do for now since you need it right away (it will cost a little more). To get some for future use you can order it online much cheaper. The website is www.vitacost.com. I hope this helps. It's so hard to see our little ones in pain.

Sorry to hear about your daughter, thats never fun for them or for the parents. My nephew just went through the same thing except with him we took him to the Dr. and he was diganosed with Roseolia. He had very bad diaper rash he would scream to the top of his lungs when you went to change his diaper, and he would not sit on his bottom either. The Dr. told us to make sure he ate foods like bananas, mashed potatoes, foods with substance in order to stop the diarrhea. But the ointment he informed us to get was Dr. Smith's, which was very very good, it stoppped the redness in about 2 days and my nephew was able to sit down.

For us, baths w/ baking soda helped soothe and we just left the diaper off as long as possible. Creams seemed to make it worse so when we did put the diaper back on we just used a thick layer of vasoline to keep moisture out.
