My four year old is suffering from allergies....eyes watering....swollen...itching and sneezing. He looks miserable. The dr. has suggested a 1/2 tsp of zyrtec twice a day until it clears up. Anybody else suffering???? and what has worked for you?
Thank you mommies for all your input. I kept him inside yesterday and he's been on the zyrtec since last friday. Today there was a much improved little face. I guess with no rain out there the allergy season is wicked...so I appreciated all the comforting thoughts and advice. The best part is...he's a real trooper and hasn't complained at all.
I give my kids Triaminic thin strips (they are easier to get in them) the one I use for allergies is symply the antihistimine in Benadryl. Zyrtec and Claritin have never worked as well as plain ol' Benadryl.
air filters in the bedroom help. Dusting and vacuuming often help. Also a little saline spray in the nose helps to wash the allergens off the membranes. Hang in there.
My 3 year old has some serious allergies and we give him Claritin in the morning and save the Zyrtec for night. The Zyrtec really zonked him out. We only give him these based on the seasons and his symptoms.
My doctor recomended a pharmaceutical grade multivitamin for me and it has been a blessing for the past four years! My allergies have not shown symptoms at all! There is a pharmaceutical children's multivitamin which is much safer for him. The nutritionals are called Usanimals by USANA Health Sciences and it is for 13 months to 12 year olds. My son also has bad allergies. I thought it was a cold he just couldn't kick but when I took him to the doctor she said it was just allergies....which was I guess a relief but man does it seem to last forever!! I give him 1/2 teaspoon of zyrtec once a day (he's only 19 months) and it works wonders!! As soon as I take him off of it he's back to the coughing and runny nose. It takes a few days for it to kick in though so don't expect it to be instant...but you DO want to stay consistent with it. Good luck!
My kids take zyrtec and it works great. They also use nasonex spray ( it is a prescription medication). I give the zyrtec to my 4 year old once a day and it still works ( he gets 1 tsp). I used to give my son Singular too, but he had some behavioral side effects, but it worked great for his allergies.
Children's Claritin seemed to work for our 2 1/2 year old. and also benedryl - but he might not be as allergic as your boy.
our whole family is suffering. Two of us are on the Equate version of Zyrtec. One is on Equate version of Clariton (my four year old) and the other two have to take prescriptions as they also have asthma. We like the Equate versions of Claritin and Zyrtec. My four year old liked the flavor of the zyrtec one the best. He took it much better for me. I know this is a pain, but giving him a bath or at least washing his face and hair every night will help keep any pollens on him from getting on his pillow and making him sicker.

If he will let you use eyedrops - I found something that works really well and that is Visine Allergy. I also know that Zyrtec works well for me - as opposed to Claritin products. I have never used the liquid form, but I am sure it works as well as the capsules. Poor baby! I know how he feels!! Good luck!!
If you did not want to drug him with medications, there are some all natural things that work for my whole family - including babies, mommies/daddies and grandparents!
Two different things:
BioAllers - liquid drops you put under your tongue. They have them for all sorts of allergies to target just those you are allergic to.
Bioron - little sugar pellets you dissolve under your tongue. There are several different ones for allergies. We have even crushed these and used them on our newborn and it worked.
These can be located at Sun Harvest or HEB Plus herbal/natural area. Not all HEB Plus have that area. I know the Blanco/1604 one does though.
You should give these a try before medication. Better for the body! :) Best wishes!

Zyrtec and singulair changed my life! It may take some time, but find what works for him.
I agree with the doc on this one. Zyrtec was wonderful for my daughter. She started it at six months. I would also suggest some benedryl short term to combat the allergy attack. He's even old enough to use Claratin. I'm not sure what the age/weight requirements are for singulair but that stuff works wonders.
Zyrtec is awesome! But if you aren't a great fan of all the meds I have found that Vicks really helps to get rid of the congestion..
Oh honey- i live for zyrtec or claritin! i have 4 children ages 10- 8 months! Use it. But I do it once a day! Save yourself a fight!
My 6 yr old takes childrens Claritin, I believe they also have it for younger children too. I've tried Benadryl and that worked but that wasn't good during the day because it made him too sleepy.
Ever since he started taking the childrens Claritin it has done wonders.
The Benadryl works the best for my son but i rarely give it to him because he ends up being drowsy but daily he takes Zyrtec and singulair.
the allergy season is really bad right now.

Sinus allergies like this are sometimes related to food sensitivities. Does your son consume a lot of dairy? Dairy sensitivities are often a culprit in food allergies.
My family and I also eat raw, local honey, made from local plants to combat seasonal allergies, (it is our primary sweetener) it really helps! I have had virtually NO sinus issues since eliminating dairy from my diet and my 18 year olds sinus allergies have drastically improved since eliminating dairy from her diet.
I use a saline mist spray for my 8 year old, while my husband and I use neilmed sinus rinse.

I have used Claritin for my children on a regular basis without any problems. There is also something going around right now. But, either way the antihistimine will help.
We tried claritin,clarinex,allegra, and zyrtec as well as accupuncture and chinese herbs, allergist, and ENT and after a year of problems found the ONLY helpful thing is a decongestant (behind the counter sudafed) and benadryl. We felt it was a total waste of money and time with all the doctors prescriptions and were very upset about how awful it had been. Good luck
Meds are good but please don't let that be your only way to treat. Get some Natra Bio allergy drops. If you know it is the trees or grass or dust that he is allergic to then you can buy bottles made just for those allergens. My daughter is 7 and HATES to take medicine of any type. The medicine we just LOVE at our house is Claritan Redi-tabs -- they DISSOLVE in her mouth within seconds!! I wish they'd make more medicines that work like this one. Good luck to you and your family.
Hi there. Our 4 yo daughter suffered terribly like your child. About a month ago she woke up covered in hives also. We took her to Urgent Care and the doc said it was more allergy related symptoms and that there were many things in bloom right now along with very high tree and mold. He put her on Zyrtec (1 tsp daily). It has changed our lives. All of her symptoms have cleared up. But he advised we keep her on it.
What a difference! It is my new favorite medicine.
Take a bath at night to wash all the pollen, etc. off and out out of your child's hair. Wash his sheets once a week in hot water. Get a dust mite proctector for your son's mattress and pillow. An apple a day helps with some allergies. Also, stay away from dairy products (we drink soy milk), because it causes you to produce more mucus. Limit the amount of sugar --it is a chemical and attacks your immune system. Consider eating more food from the earth and less processed foods (anything in a box or can). Frozen food is better if you must. At night, my daughter uses the waterless vaporizer when she has a cough. It is our friend. Hope this helps.
