Allergy and Poop Questions for My Four Month Old

Hi mommas,

My son is almost four months old. From the time he was about two months old, he suffered from eczema. I exclusively breastfeed him.

When he was 2 1/2 months old, I cut all milk out of my diet, and his eczema and tummy troubles improved significantly. Coincidentally, his poop changed from yellow to a light brown. It stayed that way until last week when I cut eggs out of my diet. I had cut eggs out of my diet because his eczema started getting worse again.

Now that I cut eggs out of my diet, his poop is green and watery! It smells awful too. I am hoping that the green poop is only a temporary thing and not related to my change in my diet. I don't think my son is sick, and he doesn't seem to be in any discomfort. Hopefully, it's just a little stomach bug and will go away soon. The green poop has been going on for three days now. His eczema seems to be improving again.

I will be calling the pediatrician tomorrow, but I'm wondering if any other breastfeeding mommas who eliminated certain allergens from their diet have experienced similar poop changes in their babies. I'm amazed at how reactive my son seems to be to my diet.

Thanks in advance for any insight you can share!

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies! My son DID get the rotavirus vaccine a few weeks ago, but it was about two weeks before the green poop started. The pediatrician thinks he may have some mild virus that was aggravating the eczema and is causing the green poop. The eczema is almost gone, and the poop is still green, but it doesn't smell quite as bad and it's getting a little less watery. I've already cut out the milk, nuts, and eggs. If the poop doesn't improve soon, then I'll cut out soy and wheat. Fun stuff.

Try posting to "foodlab" on yahoo groups. They deal with this stuff daily.

I wouldn't think he would have foul smelling BM's from one small C. you made to your diet (esp since you eliminated something). Has he had a vaccination recently? I think my daughter reacted like that to the rotovirus vaccine...never proven, though, and I am all for kids being fully vaccinated. Good luck finding some answers!

My son was breastfed and the green, water poop you are describing. He also has multiple food allergies. He would get the green poop from time to time and I really had to watch my diet for what I knew upset his allergies. Having said that, he was allergic to several foods, so it's possible your baby is still allergic to something else. The elimination diet can be frustrating when there are several culprits involved because it will feel like it's not helping. Drop all the high allergy risk foods, like wheat and nuts also.
Sometimes it's not your diet that can cause tummy issues. Most of my son's tummy issues, besides the allergies, was an imbalance in foremilk and hindmilk. I had a very bad oversupply problem, and my son was just getting too much foremilk. This will cause green, watery smelly stools too. Make sure you are draining the breast entirely before going to the next.
Hope this helps!
