Hey mommas,

I am stuck here with what to feed my little one. She is 17 months old and seems to have a milk protein allergy. We will know specific food allergies in mid April when we see the specialist. For now, I don't feed her eggs, cheese. yogurt, anything with cow milk. She only tolerates rice milk. She loves meats and fruits. What works for you? What else can I feed her for breakfast or snacks? Any and all suggestions and tips is greatly appreciated!! T.I.A.

What can I do next?

Our family is actually vegan. SO no dairy or meat. It's pretty tough for us, but we do rice, almond, coconut milk. Our kids have a dairy allergy.

To cook we use, olive oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil.

For butter, we use Earth balance butter.

You can make your own chicken nuggets and use egg replacer for the binder instead of eggs. Or theres dairy free vegan on regular chicken nuggets you can purchase from whole foods.

Ian's Natural Foods Wheat Free Gluten Free Chicken Nuggets (pretty good)

Gardein Seven Grain Chicken tenders (vegan but passable as chicken :)

For cheese, there's plenty of cheese replacements such as daiya or a rice based cheese that I can't think of the name right now.

Coconut Ice cream is absolutely divine! We buy the Purely Decadent Ice Cream brand from Whole Foods. Your daughter may like the vanilla flavored one. Plus it's pretty healthy. But a tad expensive.

Hope this helps a bit.

Mine loved cut-up tofu, peanut butter on anything, black bean burgers, fish (limited amounts due to the mercury), salsa. Remember you can do Smart Balance or Earth's Best for a butter substitute. Look at Whole Foods for vegan foods.

My daughter (11mo) has milk issues too, since I'm nursing, I have to be dairy free. Here's a few things I've found...
I make pancakes with almond milk, I'm sure your rice milk would work, my daughter loves beans, black beans, pinto, white. Ritz crackers don't contain dairy (I don't know about the eggs, my daughter does fine with eggs) Progresso makes a chicken and wild rice soup and chicken noodle soup that are both dairy free. My daughter loves lunch meat.
For baking you can substitute crisco shortening for butter, just add about a TBS of water to the recipe.
Good luck! Hopefully she can outgrow it!

My 2.5 year old is also allergic to milk protein and we found out when he was about 10 months old- seems like ages ago now! And man I felt like what the heck do I feed him- but there are SO MANY alternatives out there now!

We also use Earth Balance butter for toast and such (found at Trader Joe's and I'm sure other places too). Fleischman's UNSALTED margarine STICKS (green packaging) is soy based I think and has no milk- I use that for all my baking and cooking needs. Someone mentioned goldfish crackers- those all have milk in it- unless they found one that doesn't! Teddy grahams and most store-brand "teddy grahams" are usually safe too. Don't forget to check breads- a LOT of breads out there have milk in them- we use Butternut from Meijer (I think that's the name, and yes I know it sounds like it's not milk-free, but it is!). That Purely Decadent coconut milk ice cream is actually very good (and found at Meijer, Jewel- very convenient)- definitely try that out for treats! :)

My little one eats oatmeal with rice milk, cheerios, rice chex, rice krispies, toast, and such for breakfasts. Fruits for snacks. Lots of Progresso soups are milk free and those are great for lunches and dinners. The Tyson brand of chicken nuggets are dairy free (not sure about other allergies)- so those are great. My son also loves beans of any kind and those are great additions to dinners. We've also started trying out quinoa. Couscous is another big hit around here, as are rices. There are a few pancake mixes or certainly recipes out there, too- you just have to look- i can't remember the one we use right now.

GREAT book- Go Dairy Free by Alisa Fleming. Of course if there are other allergies involved, this may not be great. Still, a great resource for making your own substitutes for lots of milk-related products- even whipped cream!

I'm curious to check out that So Delicious coconut milk yogurt- wonder where I can find that?! Glad I looked on here- something new for us to try hopefully! :)

And if you are nursing, make sure you eliminate all milk and such from your diet, too! I had to do that, too.

Hope all this helps! Feel free to message me if you have any more questions! Good luck! You're NOT alone! :)

A. :)

My 17 month old also has a milk allergy and he loves So Delicious coconut milk yogurt. They are really good and still have the cultures like yogurt but without the milk. Some soy yogurts still have milk cultures in them so you have to be careful and read everything. Freeze dried fruit is also a big hit in our house and I have found several different stores that sells them. There is also original chicken noodle soup and chicken and rice that he can have but again you have to check labels.
