Hi!!! MY 17 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER HAS A SLIGHT COLD....NO BIG DEAL. BUT HERE IS THE PROBLEM... I CALLED HER DOC AND HE SAID TO GIVE HER 1/2 tsp OF ROBITUSSIN DM, YADA YADA YADA. WELL WHEN I GIVE IT TO HER SHE INSTANTLY VOMITS (I MEAN LIKE WITHIN 10 SECONDS OF SWALLOWING IT) AND EVERYTHING SHE VOMITS IS CURDLED. SHE USUALLY VOMITS TWICE (ABOUT 10-15 SECONDS APART) AND SEEMINGLY COMPLETELY EMPTIES HER LITTLE BELLY. THIS OCCURS NOT ONLY WITH THE ROBITUSSIN THOUGH, IT ALSO HAPPENS WITH TYLENOL AND MOTRIN. I HAVE RESORTED TO USING RECTAL SUPPOSITORIES IN ORDER TO GET TYLENOL IN HER WHEN SHE NEEDS IT (WHICH IS PAINFUL FOR BOTH OF US) SHE DOES TAKES HER VITAMIN DROPS WITH NO PROBLEM (EXCEPT OCCASSIONAL AND SLIGHT DIARREAH) HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS OR ANYBODY OUT THERE HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT COULD CAUSE THIS? THERE ARE NO MED ALLEGIES IN EITHER MY OR MY HUSBANDS FAMILY AND SHE DOESN'T HAVE A PROBLEM ONCE SHE VOMITS. SHE IS FINE WITHIN A MINUTE OR TWO AFTER THE SECOND VOMIT EPISODE AND ASIDE FORM THE BOTH OF US NEEDING A SHOWER SHE WANTS TO GO RIGHT BACK TO PLAYING. HELP!!!!!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY WHO HELPED ME OUT. I STOPPED THE ROBITUSSIN AND CHANGED HER TO A DYE FREE TRIAMINIC WHICH SHE HAS HAD NO PROBLEM WITH!!!! I AM SAYING IT WAS THE DYE BECASUE SHE GENERALLY EATS FOODS WITH NATURAL COLORS AND FLAVORS (I AM BY NO MEANS A REAL HEALTH FOOD JUNKIE, BUT I REALLY TRY TO FEED HER ONLY WHOLESOME FOODS) SO SHE DOESN'T REALLY GET A LOT OF DYES IN HER. SO ANYWAY, THINGS ARE GOOD AND I WILL JUST STEER AWAY FROM MEDS WITH ARTIFICIAL COLORS IN THE FUTURE!!!

dont give her the meds!

if she is throwing up .. dont give them to her. esp if she has a cold... NONE of those medicines HELP the cold.. they are just to make you feel better .. and in most cases with children.. that just means they will run around and not rest - resting is one of the main things you need to do with a cold.

doctors (and perents) today are way into loading kids up with medicine. dont give it to her..
rest, fluids, and vitamins are all that she needs

I agree with janet. one of my girls puked every time she got medication. on top of that she'd fight it so hard that i think she'd make herself puke that way
i found a different approach with giving her medication which is mix it in those horrid trix yoghurt and the reason being they have such a strong taste that my daughter wasn't aware she was getting medicine. and when i think about it. she did start fighting the medicine off around 15 months of age. so try different ways to get her to take it and see if she has the same reaction after she takes the medicine without being aware of taking it
if she does have same reactions then yes have her pediatrician look into it
good luck

I don't think she has a allergic reaction to the meds. Reactions usually comes with a rash, Its the flavor.I have three boys 5,3,2, they gag when ever they get any kind of liquid meds... we are sick now and its all i can do to get them to take the Motrin...i use a dropper and put it in the side of the baby's mouth and slowly squeeze the meds. in his check and hold him till he swallows it or I even let them take a drink in between squeezes...or try put the meds in small amount of juice...

I just had a thought. Is she allergic to corn products? Have you had her tested? I only thought of this because corn syrup is in meds. I would make an appointment with the ped just to be sure. He can refer you to someone. It also could be the taste. I know alot of kids who vomit at the sight of meds.

It might be the red dye in the medicine. My 7 month old had a hive reaction to triaminic and the doctor kept asking if it contained red dye because that can be an allergen. Check with your doc and good luck!

Dear J. S:
Hello, I am a Physician Assistant Certified in PA & AK. I am hoping that I can help you clear some of this up. First things first. If your daughter cannot take the medicine that the Doctor recommended, CALL the doctor...trust me he/she won't mind. Never, unless told to do so by the doctor, mix OTC meds with anything. Mixing medication with another substance can substantially change the chemical structure of the medication, either making it work differently or not at all sometimes. All little ones have difficulty taking medication. Make sure your daughter has something substantial in her tummy before giving her any medication. Unless the Doctor tells you otherwise. She is now 17 months old and I am going on the assumption that semisolid to solids are a part of her daily diet. Have her eat something solid/semisolid before taking any medication. But before you do that get in touch with your Pediatrician as he/she will be able to best help you.
I hope that you find some tidbit of aid in this short message, if you would like to talk further please feel free to e-mail me.
Best of Luck : )

I'm not sure about the allergy thing here. My child was severly allergic to dairy as an infant and it would not stay down long - then projectile vomiting and hives. There is a lot of stuff in OTC cold meds that could cause a reaction. That being said, try other comfort measures and skip the meds. Saline nasal spray and suction bulb, baby vicks, weak sweetened lukewarm decaf mint tea.

My son (3) got really sick this past fall, when he had a bad cold and I was trying to get OTC cough meds into him because he coughed and coughed and couldn't eat, sleep, drink. EVERY time I gave him the meds and he would throw them right back up. I'd never had that problem as he was on liquid Zyrtec for summer allergies. By the next morning his breathing was really congested and I rushed him to the doctor. In this case, his respiratory tissue in the bronchial tubes had become infected because the continuous coughing had it so irritated. The doctor could not understand that I hadn't gotten cough medicine in him and I told him, I DID, but he can't keep it down and that is why we are here! In this case the doctor said it was because his little tummy was empty and the meds irritated it. So, he gave him some shots, anti-inflammatory and I think something for nausea, and antihistamine. That calmed things down enough that I could get food into him and start the OTC meds.

I hope you quickly find out what is going on.

Have you had her tested for allergies?
I certainly wouldnt continue giving her any medication she's had this reaction to. It's doing more harm than good, infact, it's not doing her cold any good if she never is able to keep it down.
There are many sorts of allergies/intolerances that can be tested - and a wide variety of variations of medications, so a better alternative - perhaps even organic or hollistic, that will work.
good luck - let us know

How is she with eating foods? Sometimes flavors that are offensive will cause the gag reflex. My son does this with some meds, we had a hard time finding ones with a yummy flavor. I've found that the little strips that dissolve instantly work great, but I don't know if they make them for a kid as young as yours. I also haven't been able to find them with any type of fever reducer in them. Maybe chewables would be better? I'd ask your dr what she can have, and if they say chewables are ok, make sure she's sitting down and you keep a close eye on her till they're chewed up and swallowed.

My daughter is 2 1/2 and does the same exact thing. I don't think that it's an allergy, but more that they don't like the taste. I haven't figured out any way of getting medicine into her either. But it's the same thing with curdling. She could have just drank a little bit of milk and when she throws up the medicine, everything is curdled. What we have done though is used those thin strips from Triamenic. We put one strip in yogurt or applesauce and those really seem to help.

Hi J.
I had the same problem with my son (who is now 12yrs) He has a very strong gag reflex and the bad taste of the meds made him gag, which then in turn caused him to vomit. I started giving him medicine in juice (a small bit to mask the taste of the meds) and that worked fine.
Good luck !

PS I read the response from Jade AFTER I posted this...I always checked with the pharmacist before mixing meds with anything. Both the doctor and the pharmacist told me that it was fine to mix OTC meds with juice...yogurt...whatever worked.

Check to see if there are any artificial sweeteners in the meds. I have that same reaction when I have any kind of artificial sweetener. Be careful and have her tested. It can be a serious and possibly life - threatening allergy!

It could be that the meds just make her gag and vomit. My daughter vomits after taking any med except for tylenol. The curdled stuff that comes up is just half digested milk/food, mixed with the medicine. It doesn't sound like a true allergy (which is usually hives, flushing, shortness of breath, rash). I've tasted some children's medicines, and they taste so bad, I gag! There are fast melt tablets to try, or try a different flavor, mix it with a bit of jello and feed it to her. Usually little ones don't need a cold medicine (aside from tylenol if they have a fever). You could try other remedies such as a cool mist hudifier, Suda-care plug ins, baby vicks, menthol vapor baths.
It is probably something she will outgrow. Hopefully she won't need any antibiotics til she does! Its hard to give little ones medicine. Hope this helps a bit, and you can find a different way to make her feel better.
