Question about symptoms that 3/YO is experiencing. Has runny nose periodically , but coughs regularly (sound like a smokers cough) also snorts like he trying to clear his throat. He is a verty hearty eater. He has almost daily sessions of him vomiting. Not to alarmed, It was summed up to he had eaten to much. He is very active and has no other issues. I took him to the doctor and was told that if we suspected that he had allergies and with the symptoms he was experiencing that post nasal drip down the back his throat is what was causing him to vomit almost daily. The question is has anyone else experienced a problem like this and did placing your child on a daily allergy medication help counteract all of the syptoms that were mentioned above? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone that took time out to respond. I have waited to give a response to see how the allergy meds would effect his symptoms. It has worked out very well. He is not throwing up as much only once in the last week. Thanks so much.

To me it sounds like he may be allergic to some food. Take him to an allergist who tests for that. Vomiting every day can be VERY dangerous- wear out his esophagus and rot his teeth, among other things. My son was always stuffy and vomited frequently before we found he was allergic to milk. Good luck!

These sound like allergy symptoms. I suggest getting him tested for food allergies first. If you remove the foods he's allergic to the symptoms may stop without the medication.

Dairy products can often cause too much mucus. While many parents are convinced that dairy is an important and indispensable part of the diet, many other parents are just as convinced that dairy causes problems such as those you mention. You may want to keep a food diary to see if you can pinpoint which foods are causing his symptoms.

For years, my husband has had pretty much constant sinus problems; but a recent dietary change (going on the Blood Type Diet -- Type O for him) has helped him to feel better, and not be constantly blowing his nose, snorting, hacking, etc. He's gone off wheat and corn and almost all dairy. Recently when we were on vacation, we went back to eating "normally" and his symptoms returned (that, plus not sleeping well, and acid indigestion). So, yeah, we're pretty convinced that this is the right way to go.

My younger daughter wasn't vomiting, but was very frequently complaining of abdominal pain. She had allergies and the doctors said the tummy problem was postnasal drip. She was put on antihistamines and allergy shots. It helped somewhat. She was frequently sick. She was frequently on antibiotics. We knew little about probiotics at the time (she is now 21).

She eventually developed asthma, hives, and other immune-related problems. She had to be on TWO 24-hour antihistamines per day, plus one 24-hour antileukotriene, supplements seasonally, nose spray, etc.

Now we know more about Candida, probiotics, and food sensitivities. She is on a gluten-free, dairy (cow casein), egg, and soy free, mostly organic, mostly whole foods diet.

It has made a world of difference in her health.

I am so grateful for the Internet.

Hi, my daughter (now 3 but diagnosed at 2) had some similar symptoms (running nose or itchy nose, constant cough, then vomitting and clearing of throat) . Turns out she has allergies with allergy induced asthma. The pediatrician just put her on Zyrtec but did not clear it all up so I took it upon myslef to dig more into it and took her to an allergist. She was allergy tested and sure enough she was allergic to everything! She was put on Xyzol, Singulair and breathing treatments, I felt this was alot of medicine but symptons went away and she was much happier. Not wanting her on the steriod breathing treatments for too long I wanted to be more proactive and the doctor suggested starting allergy shots.
She was having to do breathing treatments but we have backed off of those since we began getting weekly allergy shots, they are working!! Our goal is to be off all medicine within a year or 2 since starting the shots. I took her to Dr.Tammy McCully who specializes in childrens allergies and was very understanding. It may be worth looking into, I know my daughter is much better since getting on allergy medicine and even though she does not enjoy weekly shots I know it will help her in the end. We have also had to change our lifestyle to meet her allergy and asthma needs, but now I know what triggers the episodes of coughing, vomitting, clearing of throat etc... and I can help prevent them as well.
I have to vacuum weekly, bath everynight (especially if she goes outside that day), no cats!!, dust my house weekly, wash bedding weekly and the list continues. Good Luck and hope he feel better.

Hi Y.
Yes, it sure sounds like allergies. Sometimes medications help -it all depends what he is allergic to. He is not vomiting because he has eaten too much. It is from the mucous. Also, he eats too much because his stomach feels weird.
I have a son who we finally had tested. He is allergic to dust mite etc. and mold. Living here in humid NC, this is a continual problem. The doctor keeps switching his allergy medication because they will just stop working.
Doctors have plans where you tell if it is certain foods, but, otherwise, he may need testing and treat him with avoidance. These allergies caused him to have ear aches(ended up with tubes), sore throat (turns to strep), stomach pains, sinus infections and an afternoon fever.
The acid reflux ,also, is caused by the mucous. It can actually burn his esophagus.
Since our schools are filled with dust mites and mold and the shots for allergies did not eliminate the problems, I have home schooled him.
One thing that helped him was getting rid of all toxins that we could from our home. I use toxin-free laundry soap that kills the dust mites. If you have carpeting- that can cause this to be worse.
If your doctor does not send him to an allergist and your insurance permits, take him to one.
You need to know what the cause is so he can receive proper treatment..
He can be helped and feel better - Good Luck

Can your son tell you if something is wrong? For example, can he tell you this throat hurts? My son is 3 and has acid reflux and seasonal allergies. Winters are worse than any other season, prob because of colds. When my son has a flare up of acid reflux he tells me that this throat hurts or he complains of his heart hurting. This use to make him vomit daily since birth. After much complaining, I just got him on prevacid and his vomting is gone!!

I also noticed (during the same time) that he would vomit for no reason. Through trial and error, I figured out it was post nasa drip (his vomiting was worse when he had a cold and stuffy nose). I tried zyrtec on my son, but it made him hyperactive. I now use claritin and we have no more problems.

My daughter has allergies and is on zyrtec and singular, but she did not have vomiting. She did have constant coughing or clearing of her throat.

That sounds similar to what happened with my son when we moved here two years ago. He did not vomit daily, only when the coughing got too bad. He was diagnosed with allergies. His allergies were seasonal (spring and fall) so he doesn't have to take meds every day, just during those seasons. One doctor we saw went totally overboard ordering a nebulizer and everything which we never used. The voice we trusted was the allergist because he seemed most knowledgeable about it. Having taken the meds for two years now (he started when he was 7) he's doing fine. They'll be able to tell you what he's allergic to so you'll know if you need the meds every day or only seasonal.

Just don't let them go overboard if you think it's not needed. We started with the minimum of meds and worked up to find the right amount. Some doctors want to start with a lot of meds. Good luck.

Hi Y., you may want to try probiotics. I have seen success with taking these in my nephew and others. You can get them from many sources.

We get ours from Melaleuca ... www.melaleuca.com/introduction ... and www.melaleuca.com/ps (takes you right to the store). They are an environmentally green health and wellness store ... we have shopped there on-line for five years. They operate by referal from other shoppers. So, if you would like more information, you can contact me.

This is the information on Florify by Melaleuca ... Florify's two probiotics resist stomach acid and boost "good" flora levels to help balance intestinal flora. They also contain a proprietary blend of FOS, calcium phosphate, and green tea extract to nourish and encourage healthy probiotic growth and enhance your ability to absorb nutrients from your food and dietary supplements.

Best of luck! D..

Our 4 year old grandson was experiencing the same types of symptoms. My daughter had him tested for allergies etc. at great expense and it was not fun for him. Finally, after many other things she found a company that sells natural vitamins for children that are 90% absorbable - much better than the 20-25% you get from regular chemical vitamins. After about 10 days his symptoms were gone and have not reoccured. Our 12 year old granddaughter started taking them and she is now free of the asthma problems she had. We are sold on them and have shared this with friends whose children have similar problems. They have experienced the same thing - relief from the symptoms. My daughter found these at this web site:
http://www.betterhealthinfo.net/support This might be of help to your son.
Hope he experiences relief soon.

If you want to try a more natural approach before putting him on meds, I would use Alfalfa. It is a natural anti-histamine that helps greatly with allergies. My husband takes it daily, and I give it to my kids (5,3,2) throughout the year to combat seasonal allergies and cold related symptoms. We hardly ever have to use OTC or RX since we found this.

Alfalfa - http://www.shaklee.net/lthigpen/product/20153

This brand is organically grown, sun/air dried. I give my kids anywhere from 5-10 small tablets a day until symptoms subside. It is a whole food, so generous amounts are very safe. Think of it as a super healthy salad or green veggies! A minimum dosage is 1 tablet per 10 pounds. This dosage was not always effective for us. For the younger ones, I add it to smoothies, applesauce, or made into a hot tea, etc.

As for the acid reflux, I would try a probiotic and maybe EZ-gest. The probiotics has helped a friend of ours greatly.
Probiotic - http://www.shaklee.net/lthigpen/product/20639
EZ-Gest - http://www.shaklee.net/lthigpen/product/20633

I have lots of info on these products if you are interested. It has made a huge difference in our family.

____@____.com

Right now the company is giving away free memberships (ie save 15% on retail price) if you place an order totaling 50 points or more. There is also a 100% money-back guarantee if the products do not meet your expectations. You have nothing to lose. RX's do work, but our bodies pay the price in many ways.

my daughter has similar symptoms. She gags a lot and sometimes will have to spit in the toilet, but I wouldn't call it vomit. Allergy and sinus meds are all too familiar with us. We just recently tried local honey (honey on toast in the mornings) and some other natural remedies to see if that can help with some of the allergies. I also give my kids (5 and 3) mucinex in the granual form to help break up the muscus that drains and can gag them. My daughter seems to stay hungry, but if she eats a "meal" in one sitting she gets sick...gags and sometimes vomits. So, I make her meal and have her eat slowly, when she feels she's had enough she stops (usually after 4-5 bites). If she gets hungry again later (usually within 30min to an hour) she can eat something from her dinner plate in the frig. I hear if one has reflux small meals are better. She does much better with her gagging when she eats small amounts. Of course I feel like I'm feeding her all day and can't keep her fed, but it works best for her.

best of luck

With your son's allergies, does he nose, eyes and ears itch? If he has itching, the snorting could be the back of his throat itches. My son had itchy nose and eyes first. Then he began snorting, which I had never heard before. His father has the same allergies and he knew that his throat was itching. The snorting is a way to try to relieve the itch. You need ask for a referal to an allergist. My son was tested at age 5, but I have heard of younger kids being tested. Allergy and Asthma Care has lots of good allergist. Good Luck.

Hi Y.,

I'm sorry to hear you are going through this with your son. Does your son consume dairy products? Dairy products are incredibly mucas forming and this could be the source of your child's problem.

http://www.notmilk.com/a.html

http://www.notmilk.com/

From my own experience, my family can have dairy in moderation only. Any excess or overload of dairy products and we end up sounding like we're coming down with a cold...sinuses clogged, post nasal drip, and excess mucus. If your child consumes dairy more than 1-2x daily, I would explore this route before starting him on any allegry meds. It is highly unlikely your ped will support an excess dairy claim. I make this statement based on my own personal experience with my children. We eliminated dairy and saw the results and benefits ourself.

Best of luck,
J.

I give my 4YO zyrtec or clairton (either one is ok but zyrtec tasts better and is less of a fight but kinda makes her sleepy) OTC when she has allergy issues like sneezing a lot and snorting and scratching her throat. I have been during the summers for 2 years now. She has horrible allergies usually when the grass gets cut she is worse. She doesnt vomit but she will gag on the drainage and wont eat much when she has a lot of drainage.

On the other end of things I had a friend whos baby kept a "
cold" with runny nose and congestion and sometimes an ear infection and it turns out his acid reflux and vomiting was backing up into his sinuses and getting stuck up there making him congested. Once they got him on some previcad his "cold" went away.

My 7 year old had the exact symptoms as your son until last November. He would get bronchitis easy and vomit daily. He coughed constantly and had heartburn almost on a daily basis. We finally got him in to a pulmonologist for snoring when he was diagnosed with asthma. He had never wheezed so the pediatricians wouldn't diagnosis it even though my husband, a respiratory therapist, thought he had asthma. Needless to say, once we started treating the asthma, most of the other symptoms went away. He still has some problems when there is a lot of pollen or he has been running, but I would check into it. They may not diagnose it at such a young age, but if the allergy medicine doesn't help it may be another option.

Take him to an allergist and hopefully they can determine what he is allergic to. The test isn't the most pleasant thing, but it's over quickly with no harm done. When my son has really bad allergies, he will also vomit from the congestion. A daily dose of Claritin helps tremendously with the symptoms. However, your best bet is to find out what it is and eliminate it from his environment.

Hi Yoldanda, I'm sorry your little guy isn't feeling well. I know it's tough when you aren't sure what's wrong! It does sound like it could be allergies, and I would have him tested. The test itself isn't pleasant sometimes, but I think if you go ahead and get it done you will know exactly what to stay away from and can rely less on meds. Sometimes allergy meds can make kids hyper, or loopy, or just plain cranky, so if you can determine that he's allergic to a specific thing you can better avoid what triggers the attacks. Check with your doc and see if he/she can recommend a good children's allergy specialist, and if he/she can't then try to find one that is used to dealing with kids that age to make both of your lives easier. I haven't taken my daughter yet, she's just over two and her symptoms have been controlled by staying away from cow's milk, but the stomach issues are def. a possible sign of allergies, most likely to a food. Good luck, sounds like you're on the right track.
