Advice on Stopping Wetting Through the Diaper

My 7 month old is still not sleeping through the night. He continues to wake up 1x/night approx 2 am. I feel it is b/c he is wet. He pees through his diaper, pj's,& sheets usually up his left side. We have been changing him right before he goes to bed, we have increased the size of his diaper, I have tried Huggies overnights and pampers extra absorbant. Someone has suggested plastic pants but he suffers on occasion from diaper rash/excema and I feel like these would excerbate this. Once he is awake and we change him he will not go back to sleep until he has a bottle.....Does anyone have any suggestions??

What can I do next?

I was having the same problem so I went on the pampers web site and they suggested going up a diaper size. I always used pampers baby dry (hated the cruisers!) I switched to Luvs when they got bigger (about 1 and 1/2), they are so much cheaper.

Oops...just saw you tried that. I shouldn't respond before I have my coffee, sorry!

If you buy the plastic pants, they would go over the diaper so I dont think they would cause a reaction?!?!?!

Hi C.,
Are you pointing his "winky" downward? If not, that night help. I used to buy the Huggies Night time diapers for my son and they worked pretty well for me. I have also seen people suggest putting the diapers on backwards for extra leak protection. OR you could try a cloth diaper as a liner in his disposable, maybe. I have also seen people suggest putting a maxi pad in the diaper. Hope something will work for you! Good luck.

Try using cloth diapers for bed time it's easy to add absorbancy to them. Do a search online for cloth diapers there are huge varieties and Wool Soakers are the pants/diaper cover you want as they breathe but will also absorb with a heavy wetter

Plastic pants. Also try putting a diaper on, then putting another on backwards.

hi C.!

first of all, congrats on having 2 kids and working full time...whoo...that's a lot of work! i am also a mommy to a 7 month old and a 2 year old. i had a problem with night time leaks with my 2 year old at that age and i'm now experiencing the same with my 7 month old. with my first kid, i tried just about everything. what worked for us was to use the next size up (luvs worked great for us) and then when she was a little older and started leaking thru again, we put huggies night time pull ups on her. it worked/works great.
with our little guy, i think i will try the wee wee pointing down advice along with the diaper liner or maxi pad advice as well. one thing i tried last night was to cut his last bottle of the night to 6 oz rather than 8 oz. it worked better, but he still leaked a little this morning. they really only need a minimum of 24 oz with solid foods at this age and he's really starting to like this solid foods, so i get to bump up the baby food and lessen the formula. hopefully i'll be able to get away with less liquids at night.

don't forget to put lots of diaper rash creme on him at night. we use balmex, but i know triple paste works great on diaper rashes. i've never tried the wool covers, but it sounds like a great product.

good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Hi C.,

Have you tried putting a maxi pad in his diaper? It sounds crazy, but I read this in a parenting magazine and have used it a few times when my daughter drank a lot really close to bed time and it seemed to work.

Good luck!

I agree with other moms, his weewee needs to point south. I do not always have the luxury of doing this myself however, it seems like my son is always "saluting" at night when we change his diaper. But I digress. My husband is on diaper duty at night because he is the last in bed. Last one to bed changes the diaper. He (my son) will usually sleep through it. If he does wake, it is only breifly. I suggest trying to change him in his sleep at about 11pm. If he does wake and wants a bottle to go back down, it is probably better for you at 11pm than at 2 am. First one awake changes him again. Usually 5-6am. If you think about it, 11pm-5am that is 6 hours in the same diaper. We take for granted the absorbancy of disposable diapers. There is NO way a cloth diaper would last 6 hours. We would never let our kids in the same diaper for 6 hours during the day, we can't do that at night either. Also in doing this, you are decreasing the amount of time that a wet diaper is next to his skin and therefor decreasing his risk of diaper rash. You can also put a heavy blanket under his bottm half, so if he does wet through, you can just pull the blanket off and not have to change all the sheets. Just tuck it in tight under the mattress on either side, so you do not have loose sheets to worry about suffication. I hope this helps. We All struggle with this issue.
PS- nice name :-)

Ok well, my son who is 11 months old STILL wakes up 1 to 2x a night. Sometimes he is not wet at all. My son WILL NOT go back to bed without a bottle, i have tried letting him cry, putting water in his bottle etc.... Nothing works. Anyway your son may just be the type of baby who wakes for whatever reason, every baby is different. I now just get up make a bottle, change him (whether wet or not) and he goes back to sleep. So instead of staying up and listening to him cry we both can still get some sleep.

I suggest you make sure when you change him, you point his "wee-wee" downward and make sure it is not faceing to the left or right! That should help. As far as him not going back to sleep afterwards, i would just breakdown and give him a small 4 or 6 oz bottle. Some babies need it, i know they tell you to let them soothe themselves but some babies can't do that. well anyway, good luck

My daughter did this at his age, too. And she's a girl! But she's always been a tummy or side sleeper, and she totally pees up front like a boy. We tried a LOT of things (we were cloth by day and could NOT find a good cloth choice for overnight for her). We also tried the diaper doubler inside the overnight diaper (we were able to get the diaper doublers at our local Wegman's). That seemed to help.

But what helped the most was creating a cut-off for liquid consumption at night. We stopped giving any fluids more than 1.5 hours before bedtime. That helped, too. But you need to know if that's right for you and your child. For us, we still considered it the bedtime drink, but if your son needs a drink right before bed in order to sleep, then it probably would not work for you. It's just another idea.

Good luck.

ETA: WOOL or FLEECE! Use a good quality wool (lanolized) or fleece sleeper or woolen (lanolized) or fleece pants - or even a woolen (lanolized) or fleece diaper cover, made for cloth diapers - over the diaper at night, in addition to the doubler, and you may find that even if the diaper is getting thoroughly soaked, his clothes and his sheet and bed will stay dry.

Don't use plastic pants! They don't breath and they can cause a reaction...especially when you are leaving them on all night. Get some wool pants. They are called woolies. You can buy them on etsy, ebay and online. I make them myself and sell them on ebay. I am telling you, they are amazing!! Do some research on the internet under "wool diaper covers" There is a website, wooldiapercovers.com that has lots of information. Normally wool covers are for use with cloth diapers, but they don't have to be. You can pay all prices for covers...you don't have to get the really expensive ones. Though, the best cover I ever used (besides my own!!!) is by a company called Aristocrat. Once I switched to wool covers, never had a problem with leaks again!!

I read a few responses. I think the diaper doubler is a great idea w/huggies overnights one size larger than he is. Finally I would purchase a wool cover or wool pants to put over the diaper. Wool is super absorbant, so if he does leak the wool will absorb the moisture & his pjs & bed should be dry in the am.
I really like the aristocrat wool covers, they also make a pant. (This is untreated wool, which is totally different from wool sweaters you would buy in a store. It feels like cotton. It is also really good at keeping you cool in the summer & warm in the winter.) The pant can be used instead of pj bottoms. I would recommend getting 2. They take a long time to dry after you wash them, so you could wash one while he wears the other. I buy mine from www.greenmountaindiapers.com. Amazon may also sell them now.
You may also want to decrease the size of his last bottle before bed.
Good luck.

At that age, the only way my son would stay dry was by putting a "Diaper Doubler" inside a Huggies Overnight. This almost always stopped the leaks. Without both, he leaked pretty much every night. The only place I could find the Diaper Doublers was at Babies R Us (I went to the Exton one)in the dipaer aisle. They are only about 3 bucks for 30 and allowed us to avoid nighttime diaper changes. You just place the pad inside his diaper (I had to use Huggies Overnights). Good luck!
