Advice on Hobby for 2 Boys That Are on ASD

I have two beautiful boys 7 and 4 who both happen to be on the Autism Spectrum. They are very high functioning now and both go to school in Arlington. We live in the Grand Prairie/ Mansfield area and I am searching for any ideas on extra hobbies for them. They both love video games and I am wanting to limit their time playing them. I am blessed to have an at home business where I get to recruit other moms who want to work from home. This allows me the time to be able to spend with them after school, however, I would like some advice or referrals on some after school activities that are not sport related ( they don't seem to be interested.) Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

Hey T.,
My kiddos have sensory processing disorder, and I also teach two kids with aspergers, so I have a little bit of experience in this area. Cooking, especially making bread from scratch, and finger painting or clay are all great things because they involve the senses. I'm an art/drama teacher and I find that anything artistic is great because it allows them an activity where the outcome is not specific and expected as in the disciplines of math and science. My kids also love music. If your seven year old is into video games, why not try something more creative like a music mixing, movey making, or art design program? The kids in my class with aspergers are involved in ice skating and really love it. It helps them get the physical exercise they need and gives them confidence because of the performance and presentation aspects. One of these students is a boy also. Anyway, best of luck.

With them both being so young I would say the sky's the limit. Take them to hobby lobby and wonder around and see what catchs their eye. Talk about painting and drawing. Models perhaps for the older one. Try anything and everything and see what happens.

Good hunting! The hobby/craft world is vast and varied have a wonderful trip!

I would agree with painting. My husband and son paint small model figurines together for some type of board game. They enjoy doing it together. It requires a very steady hand and patience. Hope this helps.

My oldest son, age 8, is PDD. I have had to take the computor out of his room because he is nothing short of obsessed with it. He does lots of building with all types of blocks, link n logs, lego, etc. He is now stuck on war stuff which we have had to curtail as well. He is never interested in sports. However we have put him in upward bound activities. If you are not familiar with it, it is an organization through the church that organizes non-competitive basketball, soccer, football and others. He really needs exercise and work on his social skills. We are there with him at every practice and game. It can be frustrating at times, but he has learned to enjoy it.
He is also in something called destination imagination through his school. Through teamwork they must solve a problem. If you google that you can read about it. Good luck and prayers to you. B.
