Advice for Newborn Sleeping in Pavlik Harness

I just brought my newborn home from the hospital yesterday and just prior to our discharge, she was fitted with a Pavlik Harness for DDH. While we were in the hospital, she was doing ok sleeping on her back, but last night was horrible because she was so uncomfortable in that position in her new brace. The only way she'd sleep was on her tummy on my husband's chest or held in my arms. If you have any experience with a newborn in this harness, I would love to hear from you about safe sleep positions that worked for you.

What can I do next?

My daughter's hips were dislocating when she was born but she didn't have to wear the harness until she was 4 months. At that point she was able to turn over on her own. We held her alot though. Right now she is in the cruiser brace only at night and is doing great and walking(she'll be a year old on Jan. 4). Check out the website hip-baby.org. I was on there as soon as my daughter was put in the harness. It has alot of info. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi L.,
My son was fitted for the harness when he was one week old. It took him a few days to get used to it, but he eventually did. I always slept him on his back at night and he did fine. He liked being swaddled, which was a challenge but I used those swaddle blankets that had velcro on them which worked while he was small. Sometimes I would put him on his tummy for naps if I was sitting right there with him but I know that is a no-no so I'm not recommending it. But they do sleep better like that sometimes.
Good luck.

If your baby doesn't adjust to the harness, ask your peds about just double-diapering. You place two diapers on the baby, and it helps keep the hips out in place. We usually do this in our nursery for babies with loose hips.

Congrats on your new baby!

my aunt used an egg crate mattress with a really soft flannel sheet over it, not tucked in, just drapped over. & she elevated it a little so my cousin though he was being nestled. it won't be too safe once your baby starts turning & rolling over, but for now it's magic. good luck.

it just takes a little time. most newborn like to be held and don't particulary like their back or crib. but she will get used to it. do some reading on safe cosleeping if you would like, but it's just newborn stuff, not necessarily the harness. hang in there! C., mom, nurse, lactation consultant
