My son is now 28 months old and at 22 months he had a vocab of about 60 words. Within the last few months he has stopped talking. He will lead you or point to what he wants and does the baby babble but that is it. The only two words he says is side for when he wants to go outside and movie when he wants to watch a movie. I am taking him to the doctor but am wondering if anyone has any suggestions about what might be going on?????

What can I do next?

Assuming he has no ear problems. If older children answer for him or even you as frustration answer quetions for him. He will talk when he's ready. I am mother of 4 my youngest is almost 3. He wouldn't talk for the longest time. Within the last 3 months he has started nonstop. Words/sentances/songs everything. We all want them to talk and when they do all we want is peace. Give it time he'll talk when he's ready.

I thought about ear problems too. My sister-in-law had a similar problem when she was almost three. One dr even told my MIL that she was going to be mentally delayed. Turns out her ear canals were so tiny & clogged easily and she couldn't hear well!! Once the ears were cleared, her speech took back off again! It could be anything or nothing...and us Momma's are going to worry ourselves silly about it. Take note in any other changes with your son and take them to the doctor with you. Write it all down. You'll forget once you get in there! Good luck :)

Hi A.,
I think you are right in getting him checked at the doctor. It might be nothing, my son is 28 months old, and he is not talking much either. He also lost some words, but not as many as your son did. I did get my son evaluated a couple months ago and he had a mild speech delay, but was ahead in his understanding level, so they were not worried about him at this point, though they will re-evaluate when he turns 3. How well does he understand what you say to him? That is one thing they will test if you get him evaluated. I was able to get a free speech evaluation through early intervention, so you might ask your doctor about that when you take him in. We got the evaluation and a consultation with the speech therapist. If they are a certain percentage behind they will also receive free speech therapy. So it is a great program. I have always read and heard that the earlier you catch potential problems, the easier they are to correct, so I would encourage you to get him evaluated just to make sure. Again, it may be nothing, but it doesn't hurt to check into it.

Please have his hearing checked. When my daughter was a toddler she lost words as well, ended up she was losing her hearing. She is now a deaf college student and does very well in her speech and studies, however, this is because we sought her help very early. I pray that your son does not have a hearing loss, however, please at least rule that out.

Good luck! And feel free to contact me if you have further questions about hearing loss. My email is ____@____.com

Hey A.,
While it could be a medical condition or nothing at all, he does need to be seen. It could be as simple as his not wanting to talk, your answering for him, ear wax or complications due to oral development, hearing deficit, speech delay, loss of language skills or a spectrum disorder. Either way it is always best to have your child seen especially if meeting milestones was going well and now regression has occurred. Follow your gut, see the doc and many prayers it is just a phase. Of course have it verified a phase before you disregard it.
Best wishes and prayers too,
-MB
