Advice for Cradle Cap on 6 Month Old....

I know that there are a lot of things you can do to get rid of cradle cap. I wanted to hear some suggestions that have worked for other moms. My 6 month old daughter has some and I cannot seem to get rid of it by scrubbing in bath with Johnson and Johnson soaps or Arbonne baby line products. Ideas?

Thanks for your help-
M.

I did send a notice, but I'll do it again.

You need the fine scubber used for nails, and lightly scrub the scalp at every bath.

hi I have the same prob with my little girl. I have tried massaging some olive oil (mineral oil works too) onto the problem areas, letting it sit about 5 min to soften and then washing out. I use a little brush to help loosen it. That has been working well. My Dr also said that diluted selsin blue will work as well but I have not tried that yet. Good luck

My daughter is also 6 months old and has been plagued with cradle cap from birth. There are a lot of responses here suggesting baby oil -- I can NOT use baby oil OR baby shampoo on my daughter's scalp. She has very sensitive skin, everything I've tried to use has made it worse. So to wash her hair I use the 'head to toe' baby wash instead of baby shampoo and I only use mineral oil (not baby oil) in her hair afterward. Try this if the baby oil doesn't help. Baby oil's two ingredients are mineral oil and fragrance. Baby shampoo also has fragrance. The fragrance is the problem with mine so I have to use PURE mineral oil. Try not to let her get it on her hands if she tends to suck on her fingers or thumb because mineral oil is a natural laxative so it may make her tummy hurt.
Hope this helps!

My son is still suffering from craddle cap and he's 15 months old. We've tried every trick I can think of. I will be interested to hear what others have to say. We did find that mixing a drop of Neutrogena T-Gel with his baby shampoo helped a bit.

My son had terrible cradle cap. We tried the oil and toothbrush which only helped for a day or two. Now we use Denorex shampoo once or twice a week. My husband actally gives the baths, so he may not even use it that frequently anymore. It's pretty much gone. I did hear that it can last until 12 months...maybe longer.

smother the scalp in baby oil and rub down with a soft bristled baby brush for as long as she'll let you. cradle cap itches so she will probably enjoy it, then towel off as much oil as possible and wash the hair as usual. you should be sure to rinse the soap thouroughly because it can cause the skin to dry out, repeat the oil before baths until it's gone. my son had it and doing this only 2-3 times cleared it all up. good luck

I also used and still use the Arbonne line but it did not work for the cradle cap. My son had it very bad--it had spread to his face and neck so the ped. recommended that we use Selsun Blue shampoo. Of course you have to be careful to not get it in their eyes but it did the trick. I just washed his hair with it for about a week and it was gone. So thankful for that!!

Hi M.,

I have a 7 month old and she too had bad cradle cap. I used a small plastic fine toothed comb and brushed her scalp after shampooing her hair. It was pretty much gone after two baths! Good luck.

My son had this also. His pediatrician said to put baby oil on his head, leave it there for 5 minutes, then scrub off in the bath (we used the hospital scrubber they gave us). It worked great! Plus he smelled "new" again. It did come back, but we did it again and he's fine now. We found out our problem was we weren't scrubbing his head hard enough when we washed his head. Good luck!

My son had cradle cap as well. The doctor had told us to put baby oil on his head about 1/2 hour before his bath so it would soak in... then when you give him/her a bath, use baby shampoo and a soft baby brush and work it in little circles and rise off. This worked great for us! You may need to do this a few times (different baths, don't do it over and over in one sitting). Good Luck!

Hi there - my son had cradle cap. I used olive oil on his head and took a light soft baby brush and moved is around his head lightly in circular motion and then rinsed and shampoed and that helped him. I hope this helps.

One of my daughters had cradle cap and her dermatologist godmother recommended rubbing in Johnson & Johnsons Light Mist Oil with Aloe Vera about 30 minutes before her bath. It would soak into the loose skin and then when her hair was washed, it would come out. We also used Head & Shoulders for dry scalp (be extra careful about rinsing). She got bathed every night so after a few days, it cleared up. Good luck.

My ped recommended massaging baby oil (or any kind of skin oil) into the scalp, letting it sit for a few minutes and washing or lightly scrubbing it out with your hands using selsun blue shampoo. Obviously, do it in the tub and protect baby's eyes. It has always worked like a charm.

My mother swears by baby oil and my mother-in-law swears by olive oil. Both said that they would rub it on the cradle cap, letting it soak in, then taking a small baby comb with fine teeth and gently combing the area. Also, make sure you are only washing her hair about once a week and rinsing it with clear water the rest of the time. My daughter hasn't had a problem with cradle cap but gets it behind one ear on occasion. If you use T-Gel, make sure it isn't the one with salicylic acid as my pediatrician told us that salicylic acid is similar to aspirin.

Put a little baby oil on it and comb it out with a soft, fine tooth comb. It takes forever but it's the only thing I found that works.

My son had a pretty bad case of cradle cap, he has a ton of hair so it was very hard to get down to the scalp. I tried baby oil, and vegatable oil both just made his hair look soo greasy and smell pretty bad! What I found to work was comb his hair against the "grain" every time I fed him with the hospital brush. It would make his scalp a little red but it was not hurting him.

When one of my twins got it we used a cradle cap shampoo, but our Dr. told us to just use a little Selson Blue. His went away with the cradle cap shampoo so we didn't get a chance to try the Selson Blue.
