Advice About Accepting DHS Subsidy?

HI,

I was just wondering if any other moms out there know anything about watching a child and getting paid from the state and a subsidy from the mother. I am not licensed but am thinking of becoming registered to watch just this one child. I live in Cook county. How much is the pay from the state? Any comments/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded to me about taking DHS. Unfortunately since I am not licensed, the state only pays about 10 dollars a day and then the mother pays a monthly subsidy which comes out to another 40 dollars a week. All together I would get about a 100 dollars a week before taxes for 7:30a to almost 7pm 5 days a week. I am sorry to say that I just couldn't take this little. If I was licensed I could get about 24 dollars a day. Unfortunately that doesn't happen overnight. If anyone knows of anyone with a licensed daycare in Bridgeport area, let me know and I will pass it on to the mom. It would be more fair for both parties involved. Thanks again for the responses!

My sister did this temporarly and honestly the state only paid her $10.00 a day. No kidding! It was a major disappointment. Many mother's are out their trying to survive, but in all honesty who would want to take care of a bay, full-time for only ten dollars a day!

I think it is OK. What happens is, you charge someone a price weekly. DHS will give you an alloted amount per day. The parent has to pay the difference of that. My mother has done that in the past and the only draw back is the time. DHS can take a long time especially if the parent does not have everything they need. If the parent is willing to pay out of pocket then go ahead and do it that way. You know you will not have to wait for the money.

Hi A.,

We did this over the summer to pay my sister-in-law to watch my son. She watched him in our home for 3 months. They pay by the day and she received 10 dollars per day. We also had a copay which was determined by the state. As previous people responded there is a difference in pay when it is outside the home but I do not think it's much different. It will be more if you are liscensed.

I think it's great that you want to help this mom out. I was lucky enough to have family; I don't know what I would have done without her help. It's so hard to find affordable quality childcare in the city.

Here is the link to DHS and all the info you should need. The Co-Payment Fee Scale and the Child Care Payment Rates are all listed. You can also download the application form for the mom to fill out and send in.

There is alot of paper work before you get paid so be sure you get started early. Hope this helps.

I was thinking about getting that for my babysitter, but it didn't work out as I had planned. I'm pretty sure the state will pay $20 a day per kid. Then the parents pay the difference if there is one. If you do enough searching you can find a schedule of what the state will pay a babysitter, home daycare provider, or daycare center. The amount changes for each one. Hope this helps you.

Hi A.,
My mother-in-law got the subsidy we she kept my son his first year because we did not want to send him to daycare and i had to return to work. You don't have to be liscened to get it. I don't know how much it is now. But they pay you every month. Plus it helps with a little extra change.
