ADT Security

Hi everyone,
We have ADT security service and we have it monitored by our Police Dept. Last night -at 2:00 in the morning - was the 3rd time our alarm system went off. It is so scary and annoying to be woke up to that sound in the middle of the night. The initial thought is that someone has broken into our house-after all-that is why the alarm would be activated. Fortunately, there was nothing as far as anyone breaking in, but we don't understand why our alarm would be triggered and activated??? Like I said, this is the 3rd time it's happened and it's so scary. Another thing, since we're monitored, we're suppose to get a call from ADT when the alarm goes off. They aren't even calling us. What are we paying this extra money for?? Has anyone else had this trouble with the alarm going off for no apparent reason? Or with ADT not calling in response when you are paying to be monitored?
Thanks
A.

I have had the very same problem with ADT. My husband travels all week and mine went off in the middle of the night. Scared me to death and there I sat huddled up in my room thinking someone was breaking in.....no call from ADT. I finally called the police non emergency number and got the police to come and check things out for me. I later called ADT and they had some lame reason for not calling me. Something like I turned it off too soon. I let it blare for at least 10 minutes. I agree it is RIDICULOUS that they don't call you. What if someone had a gun to my head and made me turn it off real fast! I was steamed about it too! I was so scared and could not go back to sleep all night.

You should get a code as to what section is being set off as the mom below stated. Also if you hit cancel (according to Brinks, anyway) after your enter your code when the alarm goes off they will not call. Ours went off one day (we set it off accidentally) and they called immediately. The rep told me if that happens punch in my code, then cancel and they will know it was a false alarm. Your issues does not sound normal at all

It should give a code on the monitor that says what area the problem is coming from, i.e. a window in the kitchen. Is it the same code everytime? If so, you might want ADT to come out and check the sensor in that area. Also, I know with Brinks that if you turn the alarm off within so many seconds (I think 30 seconds) that it will cancel the alarm to the company. You need to check with the company to make sure they are receiving these alarms. They have ways that you can test with them.

I agree with the other moms as well. I have BRINKS and haven't had any of the issues you have been describing. Our alarm has gone off a few times during the day for no apparent reason and I would enter my code to shut it off. BRINKS called immediately after each one and they informed me of the cancel button on the pad. So the next time it went off, I just had to enter the code and hit cancel. The funny thing is, I found out, that my husband had been the one to accidentaly set it off. They gave us a key ring pad that has a button on there to open the garage and one to set the alarm or turn it off. Well he would accidentaly hit the alarm button instead of the garage button. So if I can only get him to hit the correct button.....HaHa...that's a whole other story. :) I would call ADT and inform of this problem and have them come out and check the system. You want to make sure that it does work when or if it ever really needs to - which I hope will never happen. Good Luck!

Hi A.,

Yes I know what you are saying all to well! I had the same problem with ADT...Not sure about why it keeps going off, but the fact that they did not call....AMAZED ME! Anyway, one night I had to call the police myself via cell phone, because I was not sure why it was going off. Turned out that the wind was so strong that it blew the interior garage door open. SCARED ME TO DEATH...IT WAS EARLY IN THE MORNING AND I WAS THE ONLY ONE HERE! Thank God I did not have a child at the time. To sum it all up, I quickly ended my contract with ADT as soon as I could get out of it. They have the worst response time..if they even call at all. Brinks is much better, but I use another local company that is smaller and I have had great success with them...not sure where you are located, but if you are interested I can get you their info.

We use Brinks and have never had the issues you're describing. I don't think that's typical. I would definitely have an issue with being awakened by the alarm in the middle of the night. How scary!

My husband installs security systems and does contract work for ADT and he said if you have 1)recently had any phone lines put in or worked on, then the first thing they do is pull the alarm line.... 2)call ADT and have someone come out, it sounds like the alarm system may not be communitcating with ADT. (not sure where you live, but he said if you live in Highland Park, then the alarm signal goes directly to the police station instead of ADT). Also, like the lady said below, check the code and see where the alarm is being triggered, if it is the same location every time, then they will need to come out and check and possible replace the contact that is on that window, door, etc.

But for sure call ADT and explain to them what is happening, they might be able to help you with the problem over the phone or if not, then they should send someone out to correct the problem.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions, my husband might be able to answer a question or two for you.
