My son is adhd and odd he has been on adderall xr, adderall and clonidine. He has been on these meds for 6 yrs. We had a break in over the weekend and his pills were taken also. I reported this called the clinic on tuesday explained what happened and asked for his script a week early. I recieved a call back and was told that he will no longer receive a controlled substance . She is replacing it for vyvanse after researching the drug i will in no way give this to my son. So well i am trying to figure things out i dont if there are any withdrawls or any other problems anybody has had with not having the meds. School has noticed a change alot of the hyperactivity is there .
my first question is why not vyvanase? The biggest problem I have had with not having meds for my son, is the behavior all goes down the tubes- attitude, attention, organization, everything. If you arent' happy with the Dr's decision- then maybe find a different Dr ??

Adderal XR is losing it's patent so the manufacturer is scrambling to get it's new drug on the market. These decisions filter down from the manufacturer to the pharmaceutical reps to the doctors. All of the ADD/ ADHD meds have most side effects when the meds are removed. Behavior tends to become exacerbated and more aggressive than when they were first diagnosed. My youngest daughter had her diagnosis removed when we detoxed our home. She was not in the school system so I chose not to medicate. I don't know if you've tried non medical solutions or not but it may be a way to get good results without the meds.

just wanted to comment on the vyvanse. My son was on ritilin, for about a month and then adderall for about a year and then the adderallxr. for a couple years. He was switched to vyvance when he was in 6th grade. this drug was a miracle drug for him. after about a year he was taken off of all drugs. with no problems. Not sure what exactly you have read that was the objection but it has the same long list of side effects that all the others have. I would if needed not hesitate to put him back on it. good luck.
Adderall XR is my "drug of choice" for my son with ADHD (severe combined type) as well. However, we have used Vyvanse in the past and found that it works "OK." Many doctors swear that if one works, the other should work just as well, but they just don't work the same for us. What I have found with the Vyvanse is that the dosages don't correspond exactly to Adderall XR so you may need to request a higher dosage. Also, Vyvanse is supposed to be a 12 hr release with no need for "bumping." Kids with severe ADHD often benefit from additional Adderall "bumps" at certain times of the day.
If you are "stuck" with the Vyvanse, I would consider checking into two things: one, the dosage; two, ask about a Catapres patch. Catapres is a patch that you apply to the skin (we put a new one on every 5 days). The active ingredient is Clonidine so basically your child gets a constant low dose of Clonidine at all times - that might provide some calming for him. Also, you could ask about Intuniv or Tenex. He cannot be on Clonidine AND either of these drugs, but these drugs provide focus and are often used in conjunction with the Adderall or Vyvanse. Our insurance will not pay for Intunive but they will pay for Tenex - you could check with your insurance and see what they will pay for.

From my experience with some of my students taking clonidine; this one has serious side effects. It was made for people with high blood pressure first and now is used for other things. I remeber reading the side effects years ago and it said sudden stop of medication was very dangerous. I would check on this as soon as possible. Good luck and I would have a heart to heart with your son't doc on why this sudden change of meds???

If you have had success with Adderall XR, and have had your doctor make a decision about changing it without consulting you, then I would change doctors imeadiately.
This is just absurd. What about the clonodine? I assume that they are not going to change him to a different sleep medication because you had a break in?
The good news is, once adderall is out of his system, it is out of his system, it has zero half life, so there is no withdrawl at all. The issues you will see are completely related only to his untreated ADHD.
I have never heard of a doctor making a medication change based on a criminal act and not on the pateint before. I would call a new board certified child psychiatrist, and report this incident to the board that holds this physicans liscense. That is absurd.

Can you elaborate on what the issue is with Vyvanse?
And Vyvanse is a controlled substance too so that makes no sense regarding what the clinic told you!
My daughter's on it, went from all B's to straight A's. She's ADD, not ADHD.
I'm not lecturing, I'm saying this with sincerity, be wary of what you read on the web about drugs. It can be VERY misleading. The only thing to trust is the package insert. Reading about side effects can be alarming but look at the %'s.
Unfortunately, if a drug has an effect, it typically has a side effect. All of them.
Oh good Lord. I'm not a doctor but that sounds stupid. Bascially they don't trust that the medicine was stolen and think that you are now drug seeking. Things happen and they should understand that. Unless you guys have "break-ins" every month, then they shouldn't worry about. I'd say "Bite Me!" and go to another doctor. What he heck is vyvanse anyway? I woudn't stick around to find out.
my daughter is on vyvanse and it works great she has no side effects and vyvanse is a controlled substance also so i would bring in the police report to the pharmacy to see if they could replace it then inform the dr on it too if they do replace it
