My 10-year-old son currently takes a daily multivitamin and Omega 3-6-9. Does anyone know of any additional vitamin supplements that help with ADD? What doses are safe for a 10-year-old?

I would say talk to a health professional to find the right amounts...and I would go with a homeopathic doctor's opinion.

I do know vitamin B-1 helps with brain function, when we do a lot of thinking we use up vitamin B-1.

I would also get him tested for Candida and get him on a good probiotic. Sometimes ADD is caused by a candida overgrowth.

Hi A.,

I applaud you for using vitamin supplements, and seeking them for this situation. :)

I highly recommend checking out Dr. Timothy Voll in Highland Park - ###-###-#### - he is an incredible nutritionist and I'm sure he would be able to help you out with exactly the supplement and dose that would help your son.

I second the probiotics too. Plus getting off processed foods, sugar and sweets, pop, fried foods - these have helped so very much with children. Our diets truly do play a HUGE role in our health and will help your child - you as well!

Let me know if you are intetested in 100% certified organic vitamins and probiotics. That way you will know that they don't contain dyes, chemicals, fillers, sugars, etc. You can supplement, but if the supplement has these things in them, you are wasting your money and these additives will also effect your child as well. Here's to your family's health.

Hi A.!
The biggest help for my son was changing his diet. We removed foods with synthetic colors, additives, preservatives. Feingold.org is a company organized by parents that works with food manufacturers and compiles food lists by region of foods that are "safe" for our kids. Although daunting at first, once we had the basics down - easy plan to follow. Some items I buy at Trader Joe's, Fruitful Yield, Whole Foods and others at Jewel. Diet has ALOT to do with the issues. Our son is also on Omega 3-6-9 and a good multivitamin we buy at Trader Joe's that doesn't have the harmful stuff.
Good luck!

I read a few articles online that said there is usually a magnesium deficiency in ADD children. You can google it & research more to find out the dosages. God Bless.

I would contact CHADD. There is a chapter in Glen Ellyn. 10 years ago I saw children who through special Doctor approved nutrition shakes would be able to lessen their med doses and feel normal. The vitamins were a huge part of it. One girl even got to the point she only drank these special shakes.

My daughter has ADHD. She does not take meds. She had in the past. She is 9, but as long as she is eating very nutriously with her extra curricular activities, she does great! I advoid pop and sugar except at b day parties. She has another condition in which she has to drink gatorade daily. She does have to sit in the front of her class, but her teachers have had no troubles with her. I had a nightmare teacher in 1st grade but my advocate reminded them of some laws etc and I have had no problems at that school since.

Every year new info comes out. These children are so intelligent. Keep up the great work of being an advocate and great mom. Your son will be so thankful for your efforts later in life.

Hi A., I have a 5 year old son who started off a little bumpy with learning delays and speech delays. He has been in therapy since 2.5 yrs old with sensory processing issues. This disorder can mimic ADD/ADHD. Because their senses can have difficulty with processing all the daily input in various situations like classroom learning, an SPD kid can have difficulty focusing and become impulsive similar to ADD/ADHD kids. I have my son on a watch for ADHD currently and we have done a gluten free/dair free diet which definitely helped his processing abilities and allergies too. We take probiotics, omegas, multi-vit, but there are some focus/attention supplements out there. I did some research and we have been using Pedi-Active by Nature's Plus. It can be bought online at various vitamin suppliers and bought in-store at Vitamin Shoppe and Whole Foods(I think). It contains soy for the various active phosphatides that soy provides for seratonin benefits and it provides DMAE which is
2-dimehtylaminoethanol bitartrate. DMAE has been very successful for ADD/ADHD children--check it out online. It is a great compliment and sometimes replacement for the meds. This is made specifically for "active" children. I currently only give my son 2 chewable tabs/1x per day but it can be taken 2 tabs/up to 4 times per day. It really depends on how well your child responds to it. I only give it to him for school & therapy, but have also seen good results in other high activity situations where focus & attention are an issue. Our neurologist said at this time, she doesn't see a need for meds and is confident he may never need meds! Good luck! I think diet is very important for our kids who need a little boost with processing, focus, & attention and you are on the right track. -Judy

Omega's are great. Also, probiotics and a good multivitamin are necessary, as well as calcium and magnesium. Make sure you are buying a high quality supplement, or else you are wasting your $. I strongly recommend Shaklee vitamins to all my clients.

There is a ton of research about zinc aiding with attention (google zinc and attention). There isn't enough zinc in a multivitamin to be effective enough. I doubt most regular doctors would be well versed enough in this to help you get to the right dose. I would suggest seeing a specialist - pfeiffer treatment center, or Dr. Anju Usman, (603 E Diehl Rd # 135
Naperville, IL 60563
###-###-####) or even calling a naturopath and asking them if they have experience with this. I have had personal experience with this, and can tell you ZINC MAKES A DIFFERENCE! There are a lot of claims out there about various products that make a difference, many of which are akin to snake oil - but there is repeatable research, in both traditional and natural medicine on zinc and essential fatty acids... good luck.
