Just looking for some tips on flying an unaccompanied minor on Southwest.

My 6 year old will be making a very short 45 minute flight to his grandparents in August. He's a pro at flying, so not worried about him, just making sure that *I* know the process.

Here's what I think is supposed to happen. Those who have experience, please confirm or correct.

1) buy his ticket online. give copy of the itinerary to my parents.
2) show up the day of his flight, go to the counter, pay the $50 UM fee, obtain escort pass for me.
3) go to gate, get him boarded. wait until the flight leaves, then leave.
4) my parents show up to the airport, go to the counter (??) and get an escort pass to go through security.
5) wait at the gate for him to arrive. get IDed and then get my son.

at the end of the trip, do it all again, only reverse the parties involved.

questions... the website mentions an Unaccompanied Minor form but there doesn't seem to be that available online. so when do I fill that out and how do I get a copy to my parents? or does it fly with my son and then SW will ID my parents when they pick him up? will they need the form to get the escort pass?

TIA!!

What can I do next?

My son has flown many times with the escort...the fee bites, but I can rest assured that he is safe and gets to where he needs to be. The form has always been filled out at the counter by myself when I check my son in. You have to have all the information, numbers for who will be picking him up, and the address that they have on their drivers license ( This is important because I sent my son with his dads NEW address and he had not changed his drivers license and was almost put back on a plane back to me because of it) They will verify who is picking your son up by drivers license. You may have to have them check in and they should get some kind of pass, they will be able to ask at the gate. I have had it work both ways, sometimes they have escorted my son off first and sometimes they have waited and escorted him off last. Calling and talking to someone with your airline and they should be able to confirm anything you need to know and lay your fears to rest. $50 should buy you some peace of mind after all = ) It will be ok...I can;t even count how many times my son has flown back and forth now and he has always got where he was going, even with layovers at busy airports!

you fill that out when you check them in at the ticket counter. you get a copy and a copy goes with your kiddo (or the flight attendant in charge of escorting him). your parents sign on the other end saying they are taking custody. that's it!

I think they only let one person go through security with a minor, so it may just be your mom or dad that gets to go through security. So make sure that your son knows who will be there so he knows who to look for. I also think Southwest makes UM exit the plane last so there isn't a made rush of people coming off the plane and it will be easier for your parent to spot your son and vice versa.

Southwest is good. I would call the customer service to make sure you and grandparents do not need some other form for him.

My daughter has flown alone on American. We were with her until she boarded and my mom was at the gate when she got off the plane. no issues.

I've witnessed the SW attendants caring for UM and from what I've seen, they are caring and very accomodating.

I always call to let them know when my daughter flies. That way they know. :)
