A Question for Moms with Adhd Children and Illness

My son has not been officially diagnosed with adhd, but he has been diagnosed with Tourettes. I know it is very common for kids with Tourettes to also have adhd. My question is this-when your kids are sick, does the adhd still have the same affect on them as if they are well? My son is always very hyperactive, but now that he is sick (bad cough, high fever, body aches, etc) he is still overly active. My other son has the same thing and has done nothing but lay on the couch and rest.

We will be following up with my son's neurologist, but I thought this might be the quickest way to figure this one out!

What can I do next?

Yeah, we would be in doctors office on the weekend with sick kids only being seen and my son would be the only one running around acting healthy with 102 degree fever while all the other kids are cuddled up in their parents laps. I never understood this, but now thinking back, I am sure it was the ADHD that we did not realize he had at that time.

My kids have ASD, but also ADHD, and they were different. The more ADHD kid rarely felt much pain, even when she was sick, so we did not notice much difference in her. The other whined more, but acted sick and slowed down too. I have known even typcial kids who did not act too sick even when they were.

How he feels and acts in many situations may have little to do with his nuerological status, as he ages you will find some things in his profile that are not attributable to neurological differences. When the diagnosis is new, you should make sure that you explore all the ways his neurology will effect him, just so that you know that you are handling things well, but it will become less and less at the top of your list for him as he gets older, which is a good thing!

Hope he feels better.

Please have him tested for strep asap. He could have P.A.N.D.A.S. - Pediatric Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcus. Basically, the body creates too many strep-antibodies and they attack the basal ganglia of the brain (the part that controls movements) Tourette's-like symptoms is one of the main symptoms, as is OCD and ADHD. http://www.pandasnetwork.org

Neurologists don't accept PANDAS as a diagnosis, so you won't get any help there, but there are several pediatricians in the Dallas area that will help. Contact me if you'd like more info.

BTW, my daughter, with PANDAS, never calms down when she is sick. Don't know what the underlying cause is, but it is very difficult to get her to rest!

my oldest has only acted sick when he had lyme disease other then that he is just as off the walls as he normally is. You usually don't know he is sick with strep throat until you touch him and realize he has a fever because also does not complain.

Just wanted to let you know that I recently spoke with a mom whose son had great results regarding his tourettes with a specific nutritional supplement. I also know of others who have seen results with ADHD. Let me know if you would like more info about it. I hope your kiddos are feeling better soon!
